- 33-1/3 rpm longplay record from circa 1962. This LP's back cover tells virtually nothing of the performers heard on this album. If any viewers can forward pertinent information about them and anything else about these sessions I will be happy to add it to this description, extending full credit if the contributor wishes it. This original record album was released as SL 1038 by Strand in the U.S.A. and is part of my personal music collection. I ripped its contents for my enjoyment and created this video hoping to share it with others who appreciate hard-to-find and obscure music. Should the current copyright holders require its removal from this site I will comply.

Astonishing sound-quality for a recording which was made 1958! Edelhagen an his band were absolutely fantastic, in some respects even better than some US-Big Bands. He really was a big loss, when he disappeared. Lets listen his music often and lets often think of him. He will feel it when he writes arrangements for his Heaven Angels Big Band.

This is the superb Edelahagen band as it was up to around 1958 and includes Rolf Sneebiegel on lead trumpet, the great Otto Bredl on lead trombone and the highly gifted lyrical alto sax of Franz von Klenk. Werner Drexler is almost certainly the pianist. Ted Heath was the only UK band of the time which competed although it too often played rather naff arrangements. After 1958 when von Klenk died prematurely, Edelhagen started recruiting top level non German musicians like Jiggs Whigham & Rik Kiefer (USA), the superb Derek Humble (UK) and Milo Pavlovich (Yugo) to name but four. The Band enjoyed a classy roster of home-grown composers and arrangers aided and abetted by some high level names from overseas. It's European credentials remained of the highest only surpassed by the unassailable talent of the Kenny Clark/Francy Boland Big Band.
That last song was INSANE! I laughed out loud in happiness several times, what a TRIP!

Totally agree Michael! Does anyone hear just a touch of "Esquivel" in that last number? I love this genre of swing which I call "Avant Swing" Just Love it. Thank you SO MUCH, Brian for sharing this album... in my 64 years.... totally unbeknownst to me!! Just great!!

+Brian Hendricks If this sounds too good to be a budget label recording, that's because it actually isn't one. It's a German major label LP, originally titled "Come On And Swing" and released in 1959 as Polydor LPHM 46 099. What makes it frustrating for owners of the Strand release is that the Polydor LP has four extra tracks, "Hello Henry", "Yes Fanny", "Telefox" and "Launchin' Rockets", which are quite of a piece with these ten!

"Flamenco-Boogie" (21:50) and "Gespenster-Blues" (24:55) where featured in the german Caterina Valente movie: "Du bist Musik" in 1956. Both titles where recorded late 1955, early 1956, with Caterina Valente, Peter Alexander and Silvio Francesco singing scat on "Gespenster-Blues".

This is a perfect example of how jazz music played an equal part in the making of rock and roll. The instruments and arrangements changed, but the form remains the same. The section starting at 7:28 is total heavy metal. The intensity and the phrasing are textbook metal riffing. It's mosh pit action, pre-moshing. The floor at this show would be filled just the same, with a crowd dancing there asses off...I would hope. ;)
Being from '62, this album's not an early example of the swinging jazz scene, but it's a banging take on it. The world needs more jazz music. It's timeless and inspiring. And it usually freaking jams as hard as anything else you can listen to. I usually sample most of these modern death/grind bands to see what's up and most of it's putting me to sleep. Not this record. :)
Clive Fuller-Hale's comment reminds me of a tape I made of an Alan Dell programme which included a concert given by Kurt Edelhagen's band in Moscow on the occasion (if I remember correctly and it was a long time ago) of the first visit by a Western band to Russia since the ending of the Cold War. Having kept and played often the tape for many years it was lost during a house move. Two memories stand out. The first was the band's incredible rendition of 'Chinatown' and the second the hysterical delivery of the Russian announcer on which Alan made one of his caustic comments. That recording must be available somewhere (probably the BBC archives) but so far I have been unsuccessful in locating it.
