Crushing coke can with atmospheric pressure

  • When the water boils, the can is filled with water vapour and steam. In hot gases the particles are moving faster with more kinetic energy, so they collide more often and spread out. A small amount of hot gas fills a large volume.
Turning the can upside down in the water does two things. It seals the opening (some water does get sucked in), and it quickly cools the gas inside. Cooler gas has lost energy and contracts. The atmospheric air pressure outside overcomes the pressure inside and crushes the can.
