Definitely a big step in the right direction. I would love to see this extended to the BMMCC 4K and other BM pocket cameras. Great job in keeping us up to Date.
I've 20+ years as filmmaker, Michael, you are a time-life-safer - Thank you for bringing clarity to the ever-evolving world of film and helping us navigate new features with ease. Any idea if this monitor thing works also for other blackmagic cameras?
Fiiiiiinally Blackmagic!! About 5 years behind the times but better late than never. But no update for the Cinema 6K :( Is BM just done supporting that camera and trying to get all of us who own one to buy a Pyxis? Because I'm pleased as punch with my Cinema 6K. Remote wireless monitoring is literally the only major missing feature from that camera - for me at least.
its nice at least just to see yourself in focus or not, when you fiml yourself alone. When you get Focus. you just can disconnect phone and Add SSD to this USB-C. waiting same thing for BMPC 6k
I am new to Blackmagic, and I just migrated from Sony. When updating firmware is it all encompassing? If I download the latest firmware will it also cover any previous firmwares that have been introduced since the camera was released. Or, do I have to download each consecutive firmware release to bring my camera current and up-to-date?
@initialfocus I assumed as much, but had to confirm. Previously Sony released FX3 updates that require you to update a previous firmware update before installing firmware version 5.0....so wasn't sure how BM went about their update. I appreciate the response.
Would it be possible to use an ipad or iphone as a monitor to hand out to someone on set? Like a wireless monitor just to view the footage that's being shot? With this latency and the pyxis monitor being less than 300$ I really don't see myself using this feature if you need to be connected to the camera with cable for this to work. Still a nice step in that direction, I'm sure it will improve in the future
This really doesn’t make any sense, especially if it doesn’t run it like an HDMI monitor. The latency is unusable and with how buggy it looks I’d never use it. If I’m doing something where latency that bad is acceptable, so is using the side screen for monitoring and control or just using the physical buttons. When this is an actual replacement for a PYXIS monitor, maybe but even still an iPhone is MUCH more expensive than that or many other on-camera monitors. If you don’t already have an on-camera monitor or don’t have the budget to buy one, I cannot recommend the PYXIS over the Cinema 6K that is ready to shoot out of the box.
But A LOT of people already have iOS devices, and probably they will release it for Android in the future. Also bear in mind this is the worst the system will perform. While it's frustrating that it has taken this long for BM to offer remote monitoring and control, it's finally here and it will continue to improve over time. Let's just be happy they've finally given it to us.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately there are so many apps for things like lights and timecode and audio recorders that using the phone as a monitor is going to make life harder.
Seems really the perfect solution until we get the pyxis monitor (which hopefully is very soon)… Can I use the front usb c port? I use the back for ssd…
I suspect you'll post a follow-up video within hours, but.... A) Isn't the connection because the camera doesnt have WIFI and so the phone, or Ethernet provides a connection to the remote IOS device? B) I doubt that you're using Any of your internet Mobile data. It should just be accessing your local network. Think LAN instead of WAN. C) Does the Remote app work on a Silicon Macbook as well? On set, you could run an Ethernet cable into a Switch, and also an iPad (w/ Ethernet adapter) into the Same switch/router. Can you also use a MacBook or even an iMac from a cart?
You have to connect it to a network using Ethernet or your phone, then tap the media at the bottom of the recording screen. Then you should see a blue cloud icon on the top right.
Why would this use data? I would have thought it worked like all other cameras and it’s just the local network…doesn’t the Pyxis have an Ethernet port?you should be able to get the Pyxis onto a network, connect the iOS device to the same network, and control the camera the same as if it was another phone…
@@initialfocus Yes I know, for that I am waiting they do 16 bit like Red... (nikon lol) or sony (but I hate the atomos) I had the bmpcc OG too, 12 bit (10 years ago) was very incredible but now... they can do more.
Red camera patented (copy write) that 16 bit compressed raw codec. BM Couldn’t put out 16 bit in cam. So they had to do a workaround to give you the same quality.
This conversation is irrelevant. The thing about the Pyxis, that makes it great is, its true open gate! The image is exactly the same as all top cameras like Alexa and Venice.
I don't own the Pyxis so this is purely assumption based, but have you tried using the front USB-C which is for the pyxis monitor? as this is likely the only one with the displayport protocol that the would allow for monitoring over USB-C rather than the wireless tethering solution you have shown. The Iphone should be capable of taking in the information over its USB-C as that is how the Atomos ninja phone work for example, maybe in a future update if that doesn't work right now. The one in the rear is meant to be for the SSD or tethering data from your phone for remote uploading to blackmagic cloud etc.
Definitely a big step in the right direction. I would love to see this extended to the BMMCC 4K and other BM pocket cameras. Great job in keeping us up to Date.
Any idea if this iPhone monitor option also works with BMCC 6k?
Thank you Blackmagic for listening to us.

What a great tutorial! Thank you for posting this at the speed of light!
The portkeys monitor works perfectly well with the pyxis. Touch screen monitor controls.
Game changerrrrrr. :) for us Pyxis Users.

I ended up getting the Holland Pyro H to get wireless video. yea extra bulk but the feed is a bit smoother than video over wifi and iPad support only
Is this only Pyxis exclusive ?
Can you also use an android phone as a monitor instead of an iphone?
I see the best use case is for when you mount the camera far away so you dont just see the image but have some control over the camera.
Is it possible to browse through and playback recorded video files on the attached camera, within the app?
will this ever be available for micro g2 pocket 4 and 6 k.i use camx for my ipad but it will not work with iphone

waiting same thing for BMPC 6k
Curious how the in-camera LUTs transfer over to the app? Do we see the LUT applied or does the same LUT need to be installed in the app, too?

Any modern piece of tech the updates include all previous updates.

Is this update only for the Pyxis?
Great feature! I'm sure Bm will improve it as time goes by. Pyxis for talking head is kinda wild though lol
How did you get the URSA cine handle? On B&H website it says it still not available yet ?

I dont get the cable, does it work wireless? The connection it’s making is over WiFi right?
That's what I was asking as well... can someone with a pyxis maybe test this out? There's no point of it doesn’t work wireless
The cable provides power. The video is wireless

Awesome. Just want to see it monitor and control, no network, just usb.
🤞🏼maybe next update
Why does it even have to be wired if you connect via Wifi hotspot? Power supply?
The only way the PYXIS accepts a network connection is via physical tethering.
@initialfocus Can you use it with Ethernet plugged in to the camera in your studio as a wireless monitor?
@@initialfocus does the cable connection keep the phone charged at the same time ?
Could work this with an blackmagic canera ?
I will wait for the Nexus G1, this might be a better Pyxis
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately there are so many apps for things like lights and timecode and audio recorders that using the phone as a monitor is going to make life harder.
It's just like a Raveneye.
Seems really the perfect solution until we get the pyxis monitor (which hopefully is very soon)…
Can I use the front usb c port? I use the back for ssd…
For tethering the rear usb c port only unfortunately.
Why do you need a mobile data plan? Isn’t the body just creating its own Wi-Fi network that the phone connects to?
Doesn't this work like Sony M&C app? All you need is wifi connection
I suspect you'll post a follow-up video within hours, but....

Have you noticed increased battery life since this update?
ONLY applies to IPHONES?... :)
can it be used for camera bmpcc6k?
no the update is only PIXYS
how do I sign in an account on the PYXIS?

I would view this as more for a studio setup, multicam or director’s monitor…basically replacing a wireless transmission setup…
the latency makes it unusable for a camera monitor 😮
no ND like the Bmpcc 6k pro and no 16 bit sooooooo I dont want the Pyxis...
Correct about the ND, but what do you mean no 16bit? All current Blackmagic cameras share the same 12bit (16bit container) BRAW codec.
@@initialfocus Yes I know, for that I am waiting they do 16 bit like Red... (nikon lol) or sony (but I hate the atomos) I had the bmpcc OG too, 12 bit (10 years ago) was very incredible but now... they can do more.
It’s Debayering in the camera but when brought into davinci resolve it becomes 16 bit. It’s a 16 bit container file. So your thoughts are irrelevant.
