As Singapore looks for creative new ways to overcome its land constraints and build more homes, offices and play areas, unconventional solutions are already becoming reality in other land-scarce cities and countries.
Watch full series here: cna.asia/landu...
Japan’s Shimizu Corporation is developing the Green Float, a city on the sea for up to 50,000 people, while developers in London like Michael Shaw of Pent Developments are proposing to build apartments over canals.
Farrells-designed Embankment Place, a million square feet of office space above London's Charing Cross station, and a project to build parks and connectors over a major expressway in Hamburg, Germany, are examples of how space above transport infrastructure can be transformed into buildable areas.
Even the tops of existing low-rise buildings can become prime real estate, with developer Apex Airspace in London expecting to build about 100 homes this year by adding a storey above suitable buildings.

10 years to build something that expected to last 100 years. not sure if it is sustainable
This idea sound like idiot from start!lol....
Yeah... if you build a floating structure then a 1km high top heavy tower also does not seem like the most bright idea ever
Doesn't matter. The earth is resetting itself, we might not last another 100 years.
darrendelong hopefully we don’t last another 100 years because we don’t deserve to live any longer. We’ve destroyed this poor planet.
NUTHINGX I don’t understand people like you who generalise the ENTIRE population of humans just because some dumbass politicians refuse to be environmentally friendly and a percentage of the population don’t give a fuck, others do care and are trying to change

Idea #1 is quite possible in some ways only if the majority of Singaporeans would agree living within the same building as their offices, homes, and amenities. Are they able to travel conveniently islandwide too? Side note, I've seen numerous empty condos on top of MRT/LRT stations. So what's the benefit to that other than being a ghost town? Idea #2 would be great in towns with a lot of pioneer generations like Bukit Merah with easy access distances to nearest major hospitals or clinics or even ambulances. Not receptive about idea #3 and #4 though. We have too many newly renovated dead malls and empty spaces already. Just leave heritage buildings alone. They're the icon of Singapore.
Empty condos on top of MRT? Not sure which u are referring to , please enlighten me, I want to buy!

idea #1 makes me wonder what happens AFTER 100 years. not that most people are gonna live til that happens but still..

What!!!😓
Idea 1: plausible. Would be a bit isolated from the mainland tho.
Idea 2: No. The smell would drive everyone away.
Idea 3: Best idea. Similar concepts have been tried and tested with good results. (Bedok Integrated Transport hub, Bus interchange, mall and housing estate all in 1!)
Idea 4: works too. Idea 3 makes better use of the land, though.
Idea 1 doesn't take in destroying the building after 100 years... Try doing that in the ocean without making it dirty...
Idea2 building over water is not only bad with smell.. but also destroyes space quality/value. Water and green areas are places which makes people feel alive. If you block those of the city will lose value.
Idea3 is indeed the best. Not only for using space, but also hiding cars. Highways arent beautyfull.
Idea4 is also possible. But if done with historican buildings they will also lose value
totally agree with ur stand. number 2 is definitely a no no due to the stench from drainage canals
Imagine the mosquitoes from idea 2
How about we use 3 and 4
Also 2 if the Drain can meet the standard air smell of singapore
2 is more plausible than 1, that building has a horrible shape, is very wide, and would be the tallest building in the world, and people would pay even with stink (even though you could have filters or air pipes) if it's cheap.
Definitely not idea 4. Heritage must be preserved!!
Actually, adding new floors on top of existing buildings is one of the most sustainable ways to increase floor area without demolishing what is already there. Many shophouses in Singapore already employ this method, but the additional floors have to be built further back from the facade so that people walking along the road will not notice it too much, hence preserving the 'look' of shophouses while adding floor area. The only other 2 alternatives to such adaptation is to either demolish existing buildings or let the area stagnate. Definitely, some key heritage buildings should be preserved as they are and not have too much intervention, but many existing buildings in Singapore could benefit from some reuse strategies or they will be gone. In land scarce Singapore, we should be looking at idea 4 more intently because there is high pressure to demolish and make way for the new. Idea 4 will in fact work to increase the preservation of heritage.
Yea and much of singapore's history was destroyed for bigger developments
Old houses are likely the biggest waste of space after the golf courses. The open-space carparks, 2-storey shophouses, 10-storey blocks with those huge flats where old aunties place elaborate fish pond fountains just for the sake of having something there.
heritage can be preserved in other ways. would you rather not have enough houses for people to live in, or have these "heritage sites" instead?
@@owenchau4719 That's the mentality of Mainland China.... plough all of the cultural and historic sites; repllace with blocks of flats and shopping malls disguised as fake old buildings

hyou zan ren it’s true but Singapore’s cars are relatively clean. Idk about you but if you compare other countries’ cars with Singapore, ours are smelling like air in comparison.
And to solve the problem, building it high rise can negate the problem by a lot.
But a lot of heat generated
Samuel Ng you can’t build it that high, the foundation isn’t that strong to begin with
If u build it like it is built in Hamburg, similar to a tunnel, u can install ventilation in the tunnel to lead the exhaust away or have it go through filters to take out harmful particles. However, living above a street doesn't seem any worse then living right next to it.
This will only happen by 2050+ really lol
Buildings over canals? The smell of sewage can be smelled by those living beside/near canals. Can't imagine how much more stinker it'd be for those living above it.
correct me if i am wrong, but those canals are not sewage canals. i have been in the canals fishing before and they don't smell one bit... think about it. why will there be fish in sewage canals. i believe all sewage is underground in Singapore.
@@chaleur4112 I live near the canal and ocassionally, it will smell. I'm not sure if it's sewage canal or not but the canal do have small/tiny fishes swimming about.
SG canals don't smell that much in my experience
Yes, it smells when the water levels are low. Good point. But this should be a engineering problem
Omg, are you one of those that think your toilet bowl flushes into the canals?
The drainage canals are fed by storm drains, to remove excess water fron the land during precipitation. Sewage is underground, dammit.
it could be better if the floating city would last for at least 200-250 years. 100 is too short. Also I think understanding the structure's possible impact on marine life (whether it be negative or positive) should be at high, if not highest priority.

The best idea is the land above the canal !
But with global warming , it is expected that water level will rise !
Also when you create houses in the sea , you are extending your land ... Will the other countries agree ??
as long as the reclaimed land is within Singapore's maritime border, it is fine. Just dont extend your maritime border claim.
Not to mention the seas around us carry a significant part of global shipping traffic. Our seas are crowded!
Lets not forget other factors like mosquitoes, the smell of sewage, sewage water might enter into walkways of the building during heavy rains especially
Ikr but these ideas will nvr work
-_-
"other countries (you know which)"WILL not like it as it means our sea border will be extended too esp northg east areas slands like tekong and ubin areso near "the other countriy" evensister sisland can bejoined tomakeitbiggerordevelopment to start a vibrant fishing industry likehongkong/thailand/japan!
I don't think the island at sea would be a good idea. Cost would be high, and maintenance even higher (sea water corrodes everything, which brings up the costs). Adding to that, Singapore is a major port, and with islands blocking some sea routes, huge chunks of our water ways could be closed to marine traffic (you don't want big super tankers crashing into your island at night / in low visibility situations).
I think that the over canal / highway ideas have merit (just like that animal crossing on BKE). It could be shared space / parks, so that other nearby areas can be built higher.

Ur using a defensive mindset... also called playing not to lose...
Singapore needs people that are aggressive in thinking and taking action... which are the ones who plays to win
Personally I like the idea to build over roads and expressways. About 12% of our land is used for transportation; equal to the land used for housing. Utilising space over transport infrastructure could almost double the space for housing! Not to mention covering up noisy and polluting expressways could make living more attractive to residents too.
Lies again? Marsiling Drive HDB Paris
How r we suppose to pay for the green float if a 4 room flat is 500k
This is 2 5 million
Idea #1: too futuristic and not sustainable if you are taking 10 years to build something that is only expected to last for 100 years and it would not be very much accessible as well
Idea #2 and #3 : both are good since the space on top of canals or expressways are redundant and could be used to build small buildings or apartments
Idea #4: this is probably the least admired idea as heritage should be preserved and not ruined by having more commercial buildings built on top of them.
Eric Tan What does "too futuristic" have to do with it? Are you stuck in the past ffs
Idea 1 : all those money only for cities that can last 100 years.
100 years is long.
@@rednintheredninja6135 It is roughly only a man life time .... The ROI is not exactly that great.

That's 100 years destroyed.
Goh Yu Hern 100 yrs is nothing
@@ro6191 also exactly why building the Green Float is a waste of money 😂
Either build above or demolish completely. Which is the lesser of two evils? Waste is waste, regardless of how historic that waste is.
You never know. Maybe one day you could be living on a floating god damn gardens by the bay.
I think we should build over the canals/roads. The tower on the sea is a bit harmful to the sea animals and it too blocks the wind from the seas. The canals and roads are great ideas as they are very accessible and it can possibly work by 2040 ish
The problem with that is that many people wouldn't be so fond of the smell and risk of flooding during heavy rain or noise pollution from traffics and trains.
@@WorldofAutomobile Well if people can do their part to not pollute the canal and make it the way they want it to be, I think it shouldn't be a problem
As for the roads,we can find ways to soundproof the houses or the citizens can chip in by being careful on the roads, keeping within the speed limit and not causing accidents. This is just my opinion but with every situation comes problems.
@@Ellie-bp7pt road is not a problem, electric cars are becoming mainstream soon. it will be clean and low noise. canal would be a problem, but i do expect the smell problem to be somewhat solvable in future.

“The sky is the limit.” Lol there’s something called space...

Idea 2 : Then outside the house will have drain smell
Just tear down those old ugly buildings and build frickin tall skyscrapers. Problem solved.
Just rebuild all 10 sty and below hdb to new 30sty hdb. Problem solved . Old hdb owner will be more than happy to get a new 99 years lease again, win win situations.
lim daniel not true though. Once you en bloc, the government hands you a payout that is equivalent to the current cost of your HDB so technically you lose a home without having a choice. And if the 99 year lease isn’t up yet, I don’t think many would be happy to give up their home. Some maybe, but not all.
It’s a tricky situation really. If you extend the HDB floors, the structure might be too weak as they are super old, and yet if you build over it, it’s redundant because in a few more decades, they are going to be demolished anyway. So you’re wasting a lot of money by extending/delaying the problem for just another few decades. The same thing is going to happen to say, 30-50 storeys HDB in another half a century; which is why with implementing such plans, time is very important.
Just make a tallest buildings like they neighbor country do(malaysian). At the same time you can make world record
Please do not touch the old buildings. Leave them as they are. Singapore has enough people and immigrants. We need more homes, but don't destroy the way the old buildings look. Use the other methods. Ultimately, we don't need to keep bringing more and more people into Singapore - this is the solution. Just bring in those that we need.
Yes bro.You see they talk about land spaces but yet they building private housing like the ones in sembawang
A O what about those who are being born in Singapore, space is running out for them
While other strategies to improve our birth rate should be looked into, to say we don't need to keep accepting immigrants is discounting the benefits that globalization brings to our shores. America did not become the world's largest economy by closing off the rest of the world to them but rather by attracting the best talent in the world to their shores. Singapore can seek to do the same while also striking a balance with the influx of new residents because of our limited geography. Most foreigners stay here temporarily and we should encourage more to settle and assimilate, that way becoming more motivated to contribute to Singapore. Singaporeans have become incredibly xenophobic in recent times and forgotten that not too long ago, most of us were considered immigrants as well.
@@domthedominator97 i got no problem with that except a foreigner must believe in equality and meritocracy.
Those immigrants in America. Stay and call it their home while the some or most of the immigrants today use us as a stepping stone. Reaping benefits and taking money out( Malaysians especially). ETC.DBS Staff that had a shirt ripping Singapore flag with an India flag within.
Furthermore, countries like India take advantage of policies like CECA to throw their social and unemployment problems to us.
The arguement is that India open the market to us. It is a one sided benefit.
1.No Singaporean would not want to work in India for rupees.
2. An India (note not ethnic Indian Singaporean) Singaporean would take advantage of this loop hole to make themselves richer and will make use of the Indian Overseas policy to return to India anytime while for true blue Singaporeans where do we return too??.
Hiring foreigners should always be tag with their currency. Look at SIA locals and foreigners same pay same benefits. Is this fair?
domthedominator97 I actually loved all my immigrant neighbours, friends and classmates, most of whom were of good character. And I actually love the government taking all sorts of people into Singapore so I can learn other cultures and become friends with people. To me it was invigorating and I still love it. It is the few yet significant number of bad-mannered people or should I say individuals from certain countries that the government is bringing in that we don't need. Full stop.
Eventually they'll keep building on top and on top of everyone creating levels on earth like in Star War's Coruscant
Makes sense. Most people are planetary traditionalists who would scoff at living in space stations (even though they're _way_ more efficient). But, Earth could reasonably sustain 1 trillion or so traditionalists.
Shimizu always comes up with concepts that they never build
IMHO, building over canal and expressway is the much more sensible way, especially compared to the sea one.
My vote is with the floating cities but what do u mean they last for 100 years? What happens after that?
With 1km high... It's better you get out of there if it becomes unsafe!
it becomes worthless. much like HDB apartments
EDIT: global warming wont affect idea #1 so much since it floats. the concept is something from the past.
its what people call arcology.
and with your workplace in the same space, people will travel less and produce less emissions.
the farms that are below will absorb CO2 like how a garden does it. probably a form of hydroponics that if done right could be used to filter human waste water.
the design might look top heavy but it resembles an oil rig..
but the downside is international borders. you would probably have a boat or two patrolling the waters around it. and guards patrolling the base.
that would make the feeling for those that work the farms feel like its a prison if they stay there.
and if they dont stay there (it will probably cost more to own/rent a unit there), it will become a figuratively Ivory Tower...

REUNIFICATION with MY or ID ✌😁
Let's just move to Mars
best idea heh heh
Amauters i built something twice as big in minecraft
oooo a large tunnel... time to straight pipe my car :3
Limit the foreigners who want to live there 😎
i dont agree with building buildings on top of buildings.first of all.Is the old building able to support the weight it gains from the new building?and is the ground able to support 2 times of the weight?
They are experts btw
Did you even watch?
@@dota2pogandomegalul96 if not how was i able to reply, stupid
@@SBS2824Cc Means you clearly didn't watch the video carefully BECAUSE THEY SAID IT CAN SUPPORT THE EXTRA WEIGHT WITH ADDED REINFORCEMENT. Now, who's the stupid one? What do you even mean by the ground supporting the weight, the ground can support much taller buildings and you ask about the ground, it is the fucking foundation you shld qn about. FURTHERMORE, IF YOU DIDN'T DETECT THE SARCASM IN MY FIRST REPLY, YOU ARE TRULY HOPELESS.
@@dota2pogandomegalul96 there is actually a weight that the ground can support the buildings.like those 2 storey flats in redhill, they are build low cuz the ground isnt able to support a high storey building.if you dont know anything dont talk cock
Bruh Singapore literally living in 2070
Number 1.
Read somewhere, due to global warming and raising temperatures in Singapore, every year a tiny bit of land goes into water.
So instead having something which will be in water in future. Better to have something on water and to create sustainable environment.
ideas are fine to the mind but are rough to the touch. Its nice to let imaginations run wild but what about transportation? Would you welcome a foreign leader into a floating paradise on a wooden boat? wont that be an insult for such hospitality claim by singaporeans towards future negotiations?
Tu laa..dulu Singapore keluar Malaysia sapa suruh..kalau tak sekarang dah x de masalah dah
Mereka xnakpon keuar..tub abdul razak yg keluarkan mereka..
@@ww-tc8cj haha Habis La Singapore Dalam masa 100 tahun.
best idea is to tear down golf/country clubs.. problem solved
Building extra floors on top of existing buildings are very common here in Stockholm Sweden during recent years and it looks great as well. So that is definitely a good option
Land in Singapore has freaking plot ratios of less than 3 in general, why not just increase them to 8, 9 or even 10 like in Hong Kong??! What green float? houses over canals? Loads of BS. But before you even do that, please get the goddamn public transport systems to work. Thanks
Just invade poland if you need more space.
