- In August 2016, Doshin Hannya Michael Nelson, Roshi in the Hollow Bones Zen Order and Founder of Integral Zen, brought his unique style and vision to the Universal Hall, Findhorn.

I find it interesting that so many find Doshin's laughter creepy. I find it inspiring. To be able to laugh at one's self and everything around you is uplifting and inspiring. It is a release. It is exactly what he is telling us. Those who find his laughter creepy are being too serious and close-fisted. Release. Allow his laughter to go to your heart center and delight in it. And then laugh. Will you find your own laughter creepy too? Then you need to release some more. It is a process. The Buddhists that I have listened to and studied under all have that laughter about them. They know that life is too serious and in order to come to the place of the heart, we have to be able to laugh at ourselves and the world around us. Laughter is medicine. Laughter is a teaching tool. If you find it creepy, then you have work to do on your Self. Namaste.
I've never seen a buddhist laugh like this, it feels off... it lacks joy and emanates an air of condescension and pity. It may not be intentional but damn is it weird.
Finally a comment that explains exactly what I think and feel... It’s sad how much of us take everything in a so “serious” manner that just blind us to receive the meaning of someone else’s speech.

He’s not laughing as much at self, but the ignorance of the world. The feeling of Understanding Others is oblique. But realizing one lives in the world, the self can laugh at it own image. It’s an arrogance. Which is required to teach. And learn.

Love this man. Makes zen feels so accessible to me. A bridge.
I do not agree with his answers but his analysis is not entirely in error. And I find his laughter very healthy and I do like his conceptions overall. I realize Zen practice rejects the Enlightenment however, that said I do as a skeptical rationalist find great wisdom in this tradition.
He is showing you all including me that the wisdom we want to find is already within ourselves. If you want to change then be the change you want to find. There is a great sermon by Meister Eckhart called Vom Schweigen it is very close to what he says here. On silence.
I think we're naturally suspicious of Americans, but it is clear this man has a very different energy than most people out there. The kind of difference that can either come across as creepy, or strangely captivating.
Your comment about Americans reminds me of a great Monty Python sketch. I think the energy is both creepy and captivating...nonduality:)
I am an American and no we are not all as you may have experienced through our media or people you know. I for my whole life really wanted to find away to reject my culture and indoctrination. I found it for me as one of the Empire's children.

I'm German and fascinated with spiritually influencial people from the US. There are so many. Gangaji, Byron Katie, Adyashanti, Matt Kahn, Teal Swan, Neale Donald Walsch and so on. Thank God for these people. And thank God for all the others from around the world. :-)
27:57 So interesting seeing the "random" movements in the audience when the camera pans to them. Sometimes movements would flow from person to person in a pattern. Other times a single large movement would trigger larger movements across the them.
It’s also interesting to consider why the camera was focused on them...as the camera man is also part of it all.
Although he may be repeating things I've heard many times before, he has such a wonderful way of providing them more meaning than I could have previously imagined = D
Don’t doubt the mans sincerity one bit, one thing however, I’ve had many meetings with many Zen masters and I’ve never heard any of them address themselves as ‘I’ once. This man does it every sentence!!
I heard no Doshin. All I heard was the wind. It said everything and nothing. It was exquisite, and painful. I dug a hole, and it became a mountain. I climbed a tree in the forest, only then did I realise all I could see, was more trees to climb. I went to sleep in a field, woke up within a city, but...with a map out.
I also know that the map is flawed, and may never lead me out. But this too is of no consequence, as the map is only motivation to move. There is no city, no field no I. The exit came to me, and I realised I never was.
The real meat of this talk begins at 1:13:30 where he describes what sets him apart; he had done shadow work and I presume continues to do so. I'm my opinion it's the biggest missing ingredient from a lot of spiritual teachers. The willingness to go deep in yourself and face your ugliest shit. It's rare.
many ways to live a life-many ways to laugh....many ways to push people away (hehhehheh) and many ways to invite them in (gentle smile)
So many faceless ppl calling this man a fraud and proclaiming themselves the truth

One man's suffering is another's joy.
I find him relaxing to listen to. Zen practice has helped me overcome many problems and helped me see that what we thibk is good or bad is nothing of the sort. When I am at peace I know. It fades and is gone again but I get breaks from daily struggle through practice. That said I see contradictions in specific things I've heard him say and would appreciate answers of they exist.
He says the awareness of awareness is infinite while all else is illusion. Ok. But it dies when our bodies die so it's not infinite.
He says one can be awake but not morally in line with modern ideas so a jihadi or samurai can kill with a peaceful spirit. But I'm another talk he said when you are awake you feel compassion for everyone. Is that not a contradiction? Or does the jihadi or samurai think they are murdering in the name of compassion?

I have a a question for Buddhists what happens to us when we die if the reality is oblivion which is like a dreamless sleep then what is going to happen to me because i am my memories my thoughts my ideas my inspirations my aspirations my dreams my proclivities my propensities my pains my pleasures if i lose all of them i will jump into oblivion and loose myself my ( I ) my identity that's what atheists tells me so what's the difference ?
Suppose you have a quantity of sea water in a drum that is submerged in the ocean. Inside the container and outside of it, things happen that make the water inside and outside seem to change its composition, making them differ from one another.
When the container dissolves due to corrosion, the water in the bottle and the ocean are no longer separated.
From a Buddhist point of view, there has never been anything other than sea water. The differences between the water inside and outside are appearances; it has always been seawater, before the drum was made and after the drum dissolves.
Being one and the same undifferentiated thing, in its ultimate sense we cannot find differentiating elements, there are no salts, there are no colorants, there are no membranes, there are no bubbles, The amount of water does not increase or decrease, there is no water of sea that is pure or that is impure, there is no formation of bubbles or dissolution of bubbles, there is no passing through.
So what about the individual?
The individual identity is in communion with the ocean itself, it has never been separate, it is the ocean itself. The fish in the water is nothing other than the ocean manifesting itself.
Simply sitting means that our individuality communicates with the entire ocean and all that it contains. Sitting in communion with everything that exists in it, ending the illusion of a manufactured separation.
There is nothing other than a deep and calm ocean, which is not hindered by waves, tides, bubbles, foam, or by those who inhabit it.
Because all this is nothing other than the ocean itself expressing its unique nature.
Essence and manifestation in harmony.
So who or what is born and/or dies?
When we are born nothing is added and when we die nothing is subtracted. There is no end or beginning.
When the idea of a separate individual disappears, the ocean is right before our eyes.
You just have to do it. Be like the fish that swims in the water. Making of our experience a complete manifestation and the life of the ocean itself.
When you see someone sitting in zazen, you are simply looking at the ocean enjoying a live fish swimming happy in the deep.

It is strange how quiet the people in the room are considering how lively he is. A good contrast.. does not speak very well of where they are in their path tho. Hopefully that talks helps them as much as it helped me :)
An admirable voice, but the laugh is only now and then appealing. I could enjoy some laughs with him, though.

I guess he's got a real name. I've never understood the acquired name thing, as in being John or Jane just won't cut it, plus I've had some rubbery, er dodgy, encounters with those operating under assumed identities.

I've heard this type of soft soothsaying expressions for years it feels nice at the time of listening but I'm non the wiser the next day. I think I like to hear what shadow disguises itself inside how to recognise disfuncuality and how to access ones own personal higher guidance. Sorry not helpful atm

Creepy conceited bullshit laugh - unconvincing in its entirety- ( the laugh ) because it is so insincere and unnatural. No coincidence that many of us have picked up on it! He is trying to be zen ( some round happy fluffy inoffensive Buddha) which ain’t the same as experiencing zen.
Judegment. Preconceptions. He is you. You are me. When you see this unity you will be free of prejudice. You will laugh.

I’m not in favor of organized religions but we had already heard the bells for millennials, and we have mirrors, from which we should not escape all the time... but we have itching heard because we shy from doing what we deeply know is right. .. I also like to add that I don’t have any problem with people trying to enrich our lives with insight and talks ,from every walk of life.. but I think we need to put all the cards on the table, all the actions all the result . Jesus stands out all the time.
what a liar. you see, classic guru. there is one truth one light from which all things come from and that is Jesus Christ. but even He, great master who meditates cannot hear the Holy Spirit saying : I Am is with you. therefore, all his talk is of the other spirit which is the enemy of God. Pray people so that the Holy Spirit may enlighten you to the truth which is his son.
