Wasn't in ww1, not in a trench , but I was an 18 year old in Vietnam in a fighting hole enduring a north Vietnamese 122mm rocket attack . I wish I had heard this song . it would have been a great comfort .
Henry Burr is a big favorite of me. He sang verybeautifully and had a so great singing style. I wish more peoples will be fan of him. This song is very beautiful and still very great today.😄👍
I love this song but I really enjoy the version by Donald Peers. The lyrics are so beautiful, it always reminds me of my Grandma Sarah who used to sing all the old songs to me
I heard this song tonight on Downton Abbey too. I love this recording of this song because it sounds like World War I which is the storyline of the show right now.
Sometimes when I feel bad and things look blue I wish a girl I had... say one like you. Someone within my heart to build her throne Someone who'd never part, to call my own If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy Nothing else would matter in the world today We could go on loving in the same old way A garden of Eden just made for two With nothing to mar our joy I would say such wonderful things to you There would be such wonderful things to do If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy. No-one I'll ever care for dear... but you. No-one I'll fancy, therefore love me do. Your eyes have set me dreaming all night long… Your eyes have set me scheming, right or wrong If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy Nothing else would matter in the world today We could go on loving in the same old way A garden of Eden just made for two With nothing to mar our joy I would say such wonderful things to you There would be such wonderful things to do If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy.
Seriously, that's one of my biggest dreams. Today I'm sitting in front of computer and I do absolutely nothing - next generations will forget me forever... and ww1 soldiers? They were dying in the name of their countries. And we won't forget them. God, please - if I can't go to heaven, send me to Verdun or Somme. I will do my best...
@@zupan1758 I'm in France in Amiens, the seat of Picardie right now... Before you wish Hell upon yourself, spring for a couple of weeks of touring along the hundreds of thousands of graves all throughout this Provice (which is now called Haute de France) then go see the WWI museum in Peronne France.
@@briquetaverne I went to France two years ago, just to see Verdun, Argonne, Vauquois and other WW1-related cities around. I know what I wish for - though I know it is absolutely impossible and I will never be able to understand what Hell is. But if I were told to replace an innocent soldier and die for him in the trenches, I think I could do it. And I don't say this to be, idk, thought of as a hero, I just think that I could do that, moreover, this is just a dream of mine.
This song was published and is always performed as a waltz; this recording is unusual. It's also very beautiful - as Henry Burr's records always are. Thanks for the eye-opener.
The question is, did Burr record this also as a waltz? The effect is stunning and highly emotionally wrenching on Downton Abbey, most notably when the strings cut in when Mary stops singing... This should never be done in 4/4, as it doesn't work: too bad they probably requested H.B. to sing it this way. Tch. There is also a 20's dance record (waltz) with Scrappy Lambert doing the vocal, very nice indeed. 🐸
because of some imperialist people millions of loves relationships marriages were cut short the husbands that their wifes the loves that their huns waited never never come back the world and history will never forget...
The original Upstairs Downstairs, 1970's tv series, the writing and acting of which puts Downton Abbey to shame, brought me here. WWI era England is portrayed so meaningfully and poignantly in Upstairs Downstairs, the original from the 1970's. I like Downton Abbey as well, lavish production, but it truly pales in comparison and was lifted almost whole cloth from this original tv series of the 1970's. Season 4, episode 7 is titled after this romantic song.
My Husband, who has recently died, was in a care home,I visited him every day and sang this to him,his eyes would smile at me and I would cry.
downton abbey introduced me to this song & i've loved it ever since. it's so beautiful!
daile alexander but the downtown Abbey version is so much better and the only one I like. Its my favorite scene in the movie
Phil Burr here: Sure gotta agree with ya - Loved "Downton Abbey"!
I agree. How much more the beauty to have someone to truly share it with.
My father sang this all the time, but I never heard the verse, only the chorus. I love it.
My grandfather a Canadian Second World War vet, would sing this tune in the car, on Sunday drives. Good memories
Wonderful memories ❤

Sung for the wounded of WWl on Downton Abbey on PBS as a duet......very touching.
The original is a Duett

Great pain produces great art they say, and much great art came out of the Great War.

I am 57 and my grandmother taught me this song. I love the old songs. I think Harry Secombe sang this.
My Dad used to play this on our piano when I was a young girl. He died aged 53 in 1990.Always loved hearing this.
Could you imagine being 19 years old, sitting in a dank dark trench with death around you, listening to this tune in the trenches?

Back then 19 year olds were extremely mature in comparison to 19 year olds of today. Blame liberals.
@@rootedtogrowwny extremely vacuous statement

I was born a century maybe after this was created, but I could imagine myself being at that time. It's an incredible feeling.
Wow, you write well for a one year old baby!
This is a treasure. Thank you for posting.
Bridge on the River Kwai introduced me to this song :) David Lean's finest direction

I see there's a lot of people that know this song from Downton Abbey, anyone here like me who knows it from Charmed?
Right...who were the seventeen cretins who downthumbed this wonderful song...?

Good sound quality for a hundred-year-old recording!
Probably because the Recording was issued by His Master's Voice and they usto supply the British Royal family
My favourite version of this song. Can you please tell me where I can find it? I couldn't find this version on iTunes :(
Same song Mary and Matthew sing in Downton Abbey
