Didn’t even think to use a fethead with contact microphones! Thanks for the revelation!
Hey Marcel and Libby. i just wanted to let you know that YOU guys got me into field recording and the passion you show in each video is a true inspiration. the audio, the filming and the editing are always top notch. Keep up and safe travels.
That is awesome! Thank you so much for letting us know about this! It's always wonderful to read that our small channel still makes a difference. We keep it up for sure :)
I just discovered this channel/device today. This is very interesting and relaxing to listen to!
Welcome to Japan !Enjoy Osaka, Okinawa and Tokyo.I hope you have a good time.
Thank you so much!!
I fortunately ordered a Geofon, and can’t wait to receive and try it, maybe I need this preamp later, thank you for your test!
So glad you got one :)
I use to use an 1 meter XLR-cable when I use my Geofon. Sometimes I use even longer cable depending on the situation. I have notice that it get better with handleing noice, because I then can like touch my recorder without risking to get handeling noise compared if I would have had the geofon cable straight in the recorder! 😊
That's a great idea David! Makes definitely a difference.
I love that hat!!
And thanks for the demo, really great.
If I look at my Geofón the wrong way it will clip... Gotta love it.
What do you mean?
@@FreeToUseSounds Just an expression hahaha, I mean that it's very sensitive. Though I'm not using it to record ambiances. I think the geofon is a great layer to add bass to any recording, so I'll try to attach to whatever it will stick to and make sounds with it, mixing with other contact mics and the USI pros for example. With the Geofon, a contact mic and a microphone, I can get the Bass, the Body, and the "Air" of a sound. Sounds bigger than life.
thank you for fethead, without you I'd have no idea that it exists 👍
Oh! I wish for a video that explains what all the different LOM mics are good at. Just recently started field recording with my X8, and got a hand on a Geofón from LOM. Just clueless what the other LOM mics are good for.
Great video Marcel, your videos are so informative! Quick question, was the gain you were saying pre or post fader?
As always fantastic video! I am so stoked that I managed to get in on the last order of LOM Geofon. Will take a couple of weeks to get to Canada so I have time to plan an adventure!
Thats awesome!!
Very interesting. (especially that Geofon is not available for the ages)
Hi Marcel, great video as always. I see there is a TritonAudio FetHead Broadcast. Have you never tried it? 5 dB of more power and possibly to use it with dynamic too...
Hi! I just watched a video about it and haven't used it yet.
You have a Giants foot steps @6:50 😂 you should add some camera shake to that. The Fet het really makes it super clear sounding though!
Ha Ha yes that would have been a fun idea :)
Hi! Thank you for your amazing and useful videos!
I'd like to start doing field recording, and could you recommend devices for beginners?
Thank you in advance!
great video as always. loving the geofon. it's by far my favorite microphone! haven't tried it with a fethead yet, bit you inspired me to try that out for every quiet sounds :)
Hi Chris! Thank you so much for watching and I can only agree with you. Maybe one day he could do something about the cable sensitivity and maybe comes up with a waterproofed version. That could be fun :)
About the FH. You can really see the difference in the noise floor of the first recording of the door. Also, the sound recorded in the park had less noise too. During the editing process of the files, I could clearly hear it.
for contact microphones that do not have an XLR connector I can wholeheartedly recommend the radial engineering sb-4 die Box. it's been a game changer for my contact mic and hydrophone recordings :)
@@FreeToUseSounds I have mainly used a fethead for dynamic microphones with great success yet. I thought it wouldn't really work with the already quite sensitive geofon, your video opened my eyes. definitely going to give this a try.
cable noise from the geofon is an issue. I only use it for static recordings where I can place the geofon and its cable in a location where it will not be moved/touched. it's still an outstanding instrument of course, but with improved cable handling noise and maybe even a waterproof version it would be even more perfect!
@@ChR_is I will check it out :)
Nicely done.
Thank you so much!
It will be interesting to see the results with the contact mics. I think it’s a tad overkill for a recorder with clean preamps but a good experiment 👍
Coming up soon :)
So listening with headphones, the fet head is probably extra with this recorder. Just lowering the knob doesn’t make any difference/advantage. It kind of sounds that we are loosing some bass and definition at the top. Either from the preamp not working enough or more likely from the extra electronics on the signal. would be interesting to hear with a zoom though. Thanks for sharing!
You have to Record Bikes On enduro track Men For me its a Energetic sound every road ..
Oh yes I did that in Denver! Super loud :)
Hmmm, interesting as always but there's no real noticeable difference in sound as you said. Worth testing all the same, and it will be curious to see if it makes any difference to contact mics. Anyway, cool video as always Marcel. Thanks, and thanks to Libby for more awesome filming. Wishing you both a great weekend.
Thank you for watching! The FetHead does not make the sound sound better but the trick is that you need less gain to reach a certain level. As a result, you need less gain and generate less noise in your recordings. I went out last night and recorded all night with the Rode NTSF1 and four FetHead phantoms, and that's when they really shine. :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Sure, I get that but I thought you may get a boost of some frequencies. Anyway, would be cool to hear the NTSF1 recording difference. Maybe in the next video. Thanks for the reply.
@@cryptotrader2779 In one of the next for sure :) It also worked great on the hydrophone!
I wanted to purchase the Geofon, but I was a bit late and it was sold out yesterday in 4 minutes 😅. Better luck next time
We hope you get it next time :)
Interesting device to have though is, as you said, is it needed with thr sound devices? Whats the noise floor like on the fet head? I can see this been very very useful on a on camera xlr rig though. Great video as always though, your passion for sound recording is always a joy to watch.
Hi Edward, Thank you so much! You can see the noise floor in the first example. I attached a photo within the video. It makes a much bigger difference with the contact microphones. I also bought four FT phantom and use them with the RODE NTSF1. At night in quiet streets it really made a difference. When things are loud, it won't matter as much.
Amazing video! thanks for sharing these. I wonder if I wanna play it through the speaker. Do you have any specific recommendations on transducer speakers and amplifier? I am really struggling with them.
Hi Gracen. Thank you so much for watching. Oh we have no experience with that. Sorry :(
Thank you Til! We go south in a couple weeks and are very close to the volcano :)
So which Fethead would work with the microphone that you recommended the audio technica 4025 or 8022? On a Zoom F3? Thank you for the awesome videos.
I'm looking forward to trying this out in 2027 when I manage to order a Geofon!
Haha! Maybe another company makes a similar product until then :)
Same here
Tremor Labs makes an identical Geophone and they are sold through PerfectCircuit.
anybody else pick up a Geofon?
grab em while they're hot!
I'm excited for this thing!
Have u tried to attach the Geofone on an escalator? Saw a big one on yr way to the roof of the skyscraper and was curious about how the escalator would sound.
Yes we did that in the past. Pretty heavy rumble :)
im a little confused, when would you use the phntom powered one? because you mentioned on the bridge that it wont give phantom power back to your device i.e. the mic so if one buys the fethead phantom one could assume itll be ok in all situations?
You would use the phantom powered one for devices that need phantom power. If you would use a phantom powered one on a microphone that doesn't need it, you would most likely damage the devices.
Being that the mic is almost always out of stock. Is there an equal alternative mic?
Hi Eddie. I am also always wondering why there is isn't an alternative when it comes to Field Recording.
посоны, не торопитесь бежать за fethead'ом)
для разных микрофонов - разные модели,
для конденсаторных - fethead phantom называется,
для динамических - просто fethead
How well would this work with other contact mics, I am using an H6 and I would like to remove some of the hiss from the pre amps?
Hi Dave! Using them with the H6 is a great way to reduce the noise.
What would be the difference between Fethead and fethead phantom?
the phantom passes the phantom power on to the mic, the normal fet head doesn't
That’s it! 👍
@@stevesargent8731 thanks
Is it dangerous to use the phantom power from the mix pre to the geofon? I thought they couldn't be phantom powered because of the circuitry
there are two versions of the fet head, the "fet head phantom" and plain "fet head". The first one passes phantom power through, the other doesn't. I take it he has the one that doesn't
Hi Chris! Just as Steve said. The FH comes in two version and I mentioned it twice on the video. So nothing to worry about when using the Geofon with it :)
@@FreeToUseSounds What if you just want to use th 48v from the mixpre without any fethead?
Cheers
@@chrisdooks5903 oh yes! Do not do that :) That would damage it probably. So you can use it on the MixPre without pp
hmmm... can that thing hear our innards? like the heart beat or the stomach? lol
That’s mean to brag about the fact you an get a mic that. I one can no longer gets … LOM is no longer available
You can get that Geofon. Make sure you get on the email list and be ready when LO M makes an announcement. About 3 times a year. Good luck!
