Long distance unsupported efforts is definitely not what most people are doing! I ran into the same issues, I ended up making my own pack from scratch. Well, three of them actually. But the third one was what I wanted.
I mean, you have two arms, pockets, plus a head. Lash those zip lock bags full of food to your arms. Fill up the pockets. Get a turban and wrap up four days of food up in there. It’s only for the first few days anyway! Cmon! You got this!
Seriously though Justin, congrats man. So stoked you got the best vest straps on the lighter pack that can carry more. I’m cheering you on dude! Go get that FKT!!!
@@TheLongRanger you’re welcome! Outside the box thinking comes naturally when you try to make everything consumable or worn weight. lol. Worn consumables are likely going to make you float down the trail bro!
Nice, good solution, glad it’s not just me. I worked with a custom maker to get my 23L UL style pack with a run vest harness because I couldn’t find anything like it on the market. I’ll be making my next one myself.
I love the DIY Frankenstein approach. We're very likeminded. I can't wait to hear how the FKT attempt goes. And love the mustache! You're inspiring me to grow mine back. (You can see it in a few of my videos.)
Guys want one and the ladies wanna be with a guy that has one! Also bonus you get asked if you have a bone shaker, mining claim, and/or Time Machine quite often!
Yeah, if I was to refresh the lineup, I'd add more internal storage in a way that doesn't impact how well the pack runs when not as stuffed to the gills.
Nice :) not sure i understand though ? Having both had a UD fastpack, and Now own several Nashville packs - why do you prefer the UD shoulderstraps to the Nashville packs ? Personally i like the pockets and materiale of the Nashville packs more than the UD
I without a doubt prefer the UD pockets. There are more of them, and they're more secure (two zippered pockets are nice!). Two of the pockets on the Nashville straps open from below, which is a big head scratcher for me. That invites accidental loss of gear when I'm deep in sleep dep.
@@TheLongRangerits all about going with what gives most peace of mind definitely :) having used the NP straps for some years, have never lost anything though - they either have bottons or an elastic pull closure - so i dont really see Them as open ? Lower ones are great for waterbottles, mid Long ones for phone (closed with botton) and top ones great for small stuff like headlamp and similar - but again - personal preference and that something feels Secure in your gut is what matters - especially with this type of “right on the edge” stuff where you just need to intuitively know how it works - enjoy the pack :)
Hell yeah! And thanks for the update on the ETA for heading out. Does the forecast influence when you start at all? Not from Colorado here so I don't know if this is relevant or not for you.
The overall weather pattern is def what I’m waiting on. I’m looking to get a window right after the monsoon and right before the first snow where there should be a nice high pressure system. Getting a full moon sometime at the end would also be perfect.
Have you seen the Hyperlite Aero 28 that just came out? It's 28L internal, 8L external so 36L total, same pockets style as the UD fastpacks. The Aero also weighs 1lb instead of 1.5lbs for the UD fastpack 40.
Yeah, I saw it. Looks solid and would love to get my hands on it, but that price tag is pretty prohibitive. I'd question if the internal capacity really is really 28L securely rolled down (often packs manufacturers will measure internal volume of the pack with the top wide open!). But even if it is, that's smaller than the UD Fastpack 40, so wouldn't really work out for me, for a project like this. I was considering the Waypoint 35 for this project as well, but again, it HAS pockets up front and they're good pockets but not GREAT pockets. The Aero look to have better pockets than the Waypoint.
Great video, I like your method of finding out the liters in a pack. How did you make your tube and see how many pinballs were in a liters? Thanks for the video. Trail Flea
Brooo! That franken-pack looks amazing! U gotta let Ultimate Direction know they need to up their fastpack game! Or at least offer one volume size larger...
I have SO MANY IDEAS to make the best pack. Hopefully, I can schedule a meeting with the designers post trip. They could knock a new Fastpack out of the park!
I'm not sure! I need I guess to start a merch page. I was thinking a line of mustache wax! PM me on Patreon and I'll give you the magic PayPal info to preorder :)
I will be extremely disappointed if all future videos don't start with you twirling your mustache and dramatically saying "So..." like you did in this video. It's honestly a good into/catchphrase/hook. Love the pack, can't wait to see how it feels/performs for days on end.

Love boulder sports recycler! Best of luck on the FKT
THANKS!
6:36 $40 and a 24 hour turn around is pretty damn amazing

I think the marks were made in the large canister by pouring water in it and marking the line.
Are you going NOBO or SOBO for this FKT attempt?
Nobo, W->E
Whoa. I wonder if they can put some BD running pack straps on my HMG Junction…..
I couldn't think of a reason why not!
