Eesti Laul 2024: Before Show - My Top 20 Songs [Estonian ESC Selection]

  • Let's get the most obvious thing out of the way first: the selection jury REALLY blew it when it came to picking the automatic qualifiers. There are sure to be some robberies in the semifinals when 5 out of 10 spots in the Final are going to be taken up by at least 4 songs that would not have any chance of qualifying normally.
    As for the songs themselves, they're pretty decent but the overall lineup is nowhere near as strong as last year's. There's some stuff I really like in here (I feel particularly strongly about my Top 6-7), but I think my winner absolutely obliterates the competition and will more than likely win the selection. Take a wild guess which song I could be talking about :P
    Oh yeah, also...I was on a tight time limit and put this top together without looking at any other UA-cam rankings first (something I don't usually do since other people tend to be much faster than me). Let's see how well my taste lines up lol.

    I'm so happy that you have Antsud that high, they're my winners of the selection! The song sounds similar to Estonia 2004 (which I love), but it also has a rock guitar, which is a nice touch. Unfortunately, it is probably not going to do well at Eurovision if it gets there(

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  7 місяців тому +2

      Antsud's song stood out to me right away. The atmosphere and world-building in it reminds me a lot of some of the stuff Poland was sending back in the 90s (I won't be getting to my 90s rankings for quite some time but, spoiler alert, I think Poland was easily the strongest Eurovision country back then).

    Every single one of them on that 41-person jury, who picked those automatic qualifiers and left Ollie out, should be allowed nowhere near the juries for the actual Eesti Laul shows this year.
    That's just HOW bad of a decision that is.

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  7 місяців тому +6

      Not only is it a dumb decision based on comparing the songs, but it also makes it that much harder for the other semifinalists. I think Ollie and 5MIINUST are basically guaranteed qualifiers; that effectively means that 13 artists will be competing for 3 spots. Nice

    Here’s my ranking of the Eesti Laul songs! I’ve decided that since there’s 20 songs here I’d only bold-and-comment the songs I’m super passionate about this time.
    *1. Korra veel (9/10)*
    I love the almost futuristic yet 80s feel of the song. That was actually my first thought and then I glanced at the music video to see it was set in some futuristic city! It’s really good.
    *2. The one with the long title (8.5/10)*
    BANGER. I wish I knew the lyrics, cause that would probably make it even better, but for now it’s still really good.
    *3. Vetevaim (8.5/10)*
    I love 6/4 and I love that this song used that time signature. Also, I’ve figured out lately that rock is my favorite music genre, so I can totally get behind this qualifying. Also, she sings beautifully.
    *4. My Friend (8/10)*
    YES! A favorite-to-win song that’s actually good!! I’m not exactly sure WHY it’s the favorite to win, but it’s good!
    *5. Oblivion (8/10)*
    I love the humming paired with the beat and the beat itself. It creates a nice atmosphere.
    *6. Wunderbar (8/10)*
    It sounds like something from No Copyright Sounds but in the best possible way. It’s nostalgic and I feel like it also succeeds at a dance track as well.
    *7. Serotoniin (8/10)*
    Nice melody! And pop-rock! It’s one of those songs that doesn’t feel like something out of Eurovision but in the best possible way. Like you could listen to it and be actually shocked when you find out.
    *8. FOMO (7/10)*
    Similar to Wunderbar, but it’s below because it doesn’t sound nostalgic like Wunderbar does. Still wouldn’t mind this winning though.
    *9. I Don’t Know About You (7/10)*
    I like it. It’s nothing special, but the melody and the violin-beat instrumental are beautiful. Just kind of forgettable though.
    *10. Over the Moon (6.5/10)*
    Bland, but beautifully composed.
    *11. Bad Boy (6.5/10)*
    I love this instrumental, but the lyrics make me physically cringe. No, you’re not a “bad boy” just because you got like one speeding ticket lmao.
    12. Never Growing Up (6/10)
    *13. Käte ümber jää (5/10)*
    Background noise basically
    14. Hold Me Now (4/10)
    *15. Dreaming (4/10)*
    I *LOVE* his voice, and I love the almost musical theater instrumental. But the song is kind of a mess and gets a bit repetitive.
    *16. Here’s Where I Draw The Line (4/10)*
    Not terrible, but really amateurish. Not the worst key change ever, but it goes too slowly. The beat also sounds like a metronome, which is NOT a good thing.
    17. Lately (3.5/10)
    18. Still Love (3.5/10)
    19. No Dog On a Leash (3/10)
    *20. Be Good (1.5/10)*
    Nope. To me it’s just unlistenable. Just a real mess of a song.

      Ah, nice. Some thoughts (I'll work my way up from the bottom):
      - I said this to someone else but Be Good is a song that grew on me more as it went on. The beginning is a bit rough but it grows into a fun bop by the end.
      - Don't have much to say about Dreaming other than "idk it's just good" lol.
      - I initially thought Bad Boy was really cringe and had it in last place until I saw the music video and realized that the song isn't really meant to be taken at face value. It's a funny concept but the message doesn't come across that well.
      - Ollie was already one of the favorites to win with Venom last year, and now he's back with a much better song (in a much weaker lineup) so...yeah, him being a favorite makes sense :P
      - I'll just copypaste what I said to someone else about Vetevaim: the atmosphere and world-building in it reminds me a lot of some of the stuff Poland was sending back in the 90s (I won't be getting to my 90s rankings for quite some time but, spoiler alert, I think Poland was easily the strongest Eurovision country back then).
      - The title with the long name translates to "We Don’t (Really) Know Anything About (Those) Drugs". Yyyep.
      - Korra Veel is great and it's a shame that so many people are underrating it. Love his gritty vocals, you don't usually hear voices like that in these kinds of songs. The music video is really cool too, although part of me does wonder if it's AI generated.

    Same first place as you lol. Can't say Ollie was my absolute favorite last year cause Alika exists but can say he is this year. My second would actually probably be Serotoniin. This selection though is not as good as last years even though I didn't follow it last year. Just to clarify Alika was my winner of eurovision last year so saying I liked her better than Ollie doesn't discredit him at all. They were both great and it was unfortunate that one had to miss out. But now Ollie can get his redemption and hopefully make it to eurovision.

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  7 місяців тому

      I actually wasn't that big a fan of Venom (I thought Monsters was a much better rock entry), but My Friend is just a step up in every way. It'll probably be high up in my ranking.

    • @ekusned6032
      @ekusned6032 6 місяців тому

      If Estonia had sent either Alika or Ollie for eurovision 2023 I think they would've been my winner in both scenarios. I do prefer Venom to My Friend but it's still a very quality song he sent for next year's eurovision. Can say I have a proper top 3 now.
      3. FOMO
      2. Serotoniin
      1. My Friend
      Zero taste? idk I'm writing this very late lol

    So nice to see someone else with Silver Jusilo so high! I’ve seen quite a few other rankings with him down at the bottom or in the middle somewhere, but your high ranking is great! My winner so far! In terms of the other songs, I actually don’t think this is that bad of a year. Most all the songs are at least decent, with the exception of a few painfully cliche ballads. Depending on things like vocals and stagings, I think Estonia could have a real shot at a decent result again!

    • @JH3Eurovision
      @JH3Eurovision  7 місяців тому +2

      Silver Jusilo's song (along with Peter Põder's) are not the style I would generally go for when looking for electronic music, but I think both of them are fantastic; likewise, Oblivion is closer to what I'd normally listen to but I feel very little for it and I don't think it progresses enough over 3 minutes (I have this same issue with Strangers by Kenya Grace, a song that's gotten very popular lately and that Oblivion almost instantly reminded me of).
      That being said, Lately has a lot of great instrumental touches throughout and it just has a really nice vibe. It's not a very competitive song, but definitely one of the most original. Fantastic music video too, easily my favorite one out of all of these. Really love how they play with the lighting and visuals to sync with the song.

    Hello ^^
    Some comments:
    First of all I (obviously) agree with the winner. Ollie is such an Awesome artists, and he just slayed again. This song fits my love for harder rock stuff so well.
    Estonia has 1 Job, sending him
    The Auto Qualifiers are not generally my least favourites. But some of them are really weak, particulary Käte ümber jää.
    Bad Boy could be in my Top 3 if the lyrics where not that repetitive.
    To the song from 5 Miinust: Every year there is this 1 completely absurd entry in Eesti Laul. These ones quality varies strongly from Awesome (Redel- Tartu) to disgusting (Merlyn).
    This one I think actually slaps pretty hard.

    I am surprised that Ollie is your winner. I remember that 'Venom' was not one of your favourites in last year's Eesti Laul and 'My Friend' is a weaker song so...
    Anyway, judging by recaps the standouts for me are:
    1. My Friend
    2. Bad Boy
    3. Wunderbar
    4. Korra veel
    5. FOMO
    6. the song with the super long title
    Good luck Estonia!

      You might be alone in thinking My Friend is worse than Venom, at least in my circles :P
      I've seen a bit of hype for Wunderbar and tbh I don't really get it. Very cheesy and not that memorable. FOMO is solid but it's not particularly my kind of music and some of the sounds throughout it annoy me.
