the fact that his nationality is british doesn't erase his south asian heritage and the fact that he's a member of the south asian diaspora. one can be british (nationality-wise) and still identify as pakistani at the same time (which he does). this is like diaspora/immigrant (1st/2nd/3rd generation, etc) experience 101, dude...

In most of the countries that were ruled by the British Empire, colonialism is still fresh in their memory... Whereas in the UK, colonialism has mostly been forgotten. It's like some kind of colonial amnesia.

So true, I think it it might be because they don't learn about it in school and about the extremely negative impacts that colonialism has on a country. I've only ever heard them mention their 'empire' in glowing terms, which is infuriating to those of us from counties colonised by them!

Out of sight out of mind. Nothing really changed that much for the home country british with or without their colonies but for colonies, the british had/has a huge impact on their lifestyle (e.i. food, language, etc.) so It still resonates with them.

Thank you for mentioning this i was just walking past the road they actually filmed it in our area like where we walk past to get to meadowhall you can see our old house in that film and our whole town appreciated and supported him since that film. Everyone quotes it easily.
Same, fell in love with him back then & ever since, have just been deep diving his music, potery etc. He really is an impressive man, so smart witted & the stand be takes for his culture & people, over & over - admirable & amazing to see.
