This scene sure is heart-ripping, but hey, why hate the celestials? They didn't just strike Kaguya down on the spot when she cried out to return, did they? They gave her some time, and then came in full glory, complete with a cloud and an orchestra, and lifted her to Heaven. A life on Earth is only given to you once, you can't replay, erase, and correct. When it's time, it's time. And when you're *looking back* on it, good when it has beauty to it. This melody sure has. XvX_K1R1T0_XvX_ Killme she was sent to earth as a punishment In Japan, there is a separation of gods and humans, and when they cross paths something goes wrong because the gods can not understand human emotion, it’s like if a human tried to relate to an ant. For them, they live a life of contentment and calm. The god of mercy is the one who places the shawl on her, because mercy to her is sparing her the pain of earth. They just have a difference in perspective it’s not about being malicious, the gods just simply can not understand.
XvX_K1R1T0_XvX_ Killme plus when she calls out to them that she wants to return, they see it as she atoned for her sins because she’s been through so much suffering Like how in Buddhism, Hell isnt eternal, you go to heaven once you’ve been cleansed of your sins through your pain
Bingo. My grandmother, who taught me about Buddhism, is getting near the end of her life and her mind which was once the sharpest I have ever known, is abandoning her. It has been painful to watch her cling to life in fear of the face of death. I couldn't reach her to show her the beauty of what she taught me and had her sit down and watch this movie with me. At the end we cried so hard I couldn't breathe, but I could see she understood. One of the best moments of my life.

For me, Princess Kaguya is an embodiment of Ghibli, making firewall to all of those, who worship their masterpieces. It is clearly visible in the last scene
+ImSofaKingGood It is. This whole movie is about the human condition. Princess Kaguya arrived from nowhere in a flower, like conscience born from the nothingness that preceded it, suddenly produced by a brain, or a result of the soul. It is welcomed and raised and ponders on life, on happiness, on others, on human relations. But it finds nothing to answer itself. It echoes in nothingness again. When Kaguya destroys the garden, she realizes all happiness around her is "fake". Nothing is persistent. All is destroyed. Such a mindset finally makes her emit a desperate death wish when the Emperor attempts to assault her. Calling the moon is drinking a slow poison. Calling for oblivion. Calling for an eternal death. This is why the people of the Moon have no feeling, no worries ; but this is also what the movie meant before. Contrasting life and death. Making people see how short life is. How unavoidable death is. When Kaguya finally talks about Earth and the Moon, she tries to convince people that living is worth it. But when the Feathered Dress falls upon her, it's over ; she has fallen into Eternal Oblivion. Dead. She forgot all, and is returning to bliss.
+blara2401 Totally agree. The princess' arrival was an unspoken trial for the human kind's condition. However, even though she says at the end that there are people able to appreciate the happiness, in various form, we are not there yet, unfortunately...
In my opinion, with this song, the Master Joy Hisaishi has composed the song of songs, the quintessence of music, philosophy and poetry at the same time. He is able to express the inexpressible.
This song makes me think about how "death" is such a depressing and scary subject so hard to accept... but also "death" is part of our "life", it's what makes "life" our most important treasure. Not having an important status in society, not to have great material wealth, not having the life that publicity forces us to have...but the time and the experiences and memories we have while we are living in this precious planet we have the luck to live in...that is the most precious and most beautiful thing to ever happen to any creature, being alive, and even if life has an end, it should be celebrated and yes...farewells are always sad... but life is so beautiful and this world is so worth it that, I rather dance and cry of happiness celebrating our memories together than only seeing the dark side of "death". Thank you so much for this incredible song!
Can I just say, THAT ENDING WAS FUCKING AMAZING. The mix of sadness by everyone and Kaguya's plead to stay while the celestials just carried on, especially that girl that interrupted kaguya's pleas by putting the cloak on Kaguya. That contrasted with THIS PIECE GAVE ME MIXED EMOTIONS THAT JUST UGH, I CAN'T DUDE.
As sad as it was to see Kaguya get taken away... was I the only one who felt creeped out by the ending ? It wasn't just sad... it was terrifying (plus, in some way, the celestial beings killed Kaguya... as they erased every memory she had from the life she lived on Earth). The use of happy festive music was a brilliant contrast to the scene, enhancing the unease.
RadicalDreamer17 I agree. The joyfull music made this scene so sad. Do you see pompoko ? There is a very similar scene: very joyfull tanuki on a very nice boat, energic song with very creepy lyrics... If you don't see Pompoko, I strongly recommand to you. It's very WTF, very sad, very funny.
RadicalDreamer17 I too found brilliant and funny that Hisaishi went for a festive music for this scene, it gives you a breath of joy before the dramatic ending.
+RadicalDreamer17 I haven't read this anywhere else, but my interpretation of events in the movie was that when Little Bamboo wished the Moon People would come and take her, that was symbolic of someone wanting to kill themselves; to die; to escape their life. After this thought, she regretted it, yet she couldn't stop the Moon People coming. Her fate had already been decided in those two seconds. But, perhaps death isn't dark and grim like we all imagine, perhaps it's as simple as floating away on a cloud.
Isao Takahata told Joe Hisaishi that the image of the music of the gods riding on clouds in the scene where they return to heaven is one of peace and purity, something strange, and something frighteningly optimistic. For example,he wanted something like a failed Indian musical movie.
This song brings tears to my eyes without fail. I dated a wonderful Japanese girl for 5 years. We broke up in 2015 as she was from a wealthy and well known religious family and they could not accept someone of my status for a serious future. We watched this film several times in our final holiday together and the procession of her family taking her home to the moon very much echoes my reality. This seemingly happy tune is also subtly melancholic and will always remind me of this loss.
THis music is like a hand grenade wrapped up in colorful paper and ribbons to look like a chocolate easter egg. You wrap it up full of expectation and then it rips your guts out.
I think this beautiful song is befitting of Buddhism. Though there is sadness around, happiness can still be found. By being attached she encountered suffering, but to remove it is to find peace. That's just my take. I love this movie so much!!!
+Koa G It's actually very much a criticism of Buddhism and precisely this emphasis in this religion that this world is only full of suffering and only in the next can full bliss and happiness be obtained, instead of building a happy life here on this Earth and in this life. This is also in keeping with criticisms of Buddhism in East Asia throughout history, particularly by Taoists.
I know, right ? This song has so many emotions. We can literally FEEL the song. It's so... powerful. I mean, it's like it reaches directly your heart !!! You're trapped in the scene, in this reality, in.. in this emotion . I want to cry each time I listen to it. It's like it reveals us a secret. How to be free, how soon we'll get to know how creator
Seeing how many instruments are involved makes me feel a whole heap of respect for soundtrack writers like Joe Hisaishi that can put such cohesive and beautiful pieces together. Aaah and now I'm tearing up thinking of the scene ;__;
I once read stories about people who had near death experience, some of them claimed they heard beautiful music and some one came down to them on clouds. When I was watching this scene of this anime, I was stunned and could not forget about it for all these years. I do believe this scene is a metaphor for her death. The music is so beautiful and so unreal, it’s exactly the kind of music I would imagine coming down from sky when one dies. Joe Hisaishi is such a genius , I don’t know how he did that. This music for that scene is “out of this world” ( pun intended), beyond perfect !
I actually didn't cry at the end of this movie. I was just...shocked. My jaw hanging. I remember when the credits rolled, I was just thinking to myself...."what?"
While watching I became happy and sad simultaneously. I couldn’t figure out why kaguya was sad and for few moments she becomes happy and then again sad .
An absolute gem of a movie! This movie just completely changed my view on life and death. When you're young, the world is just carefree and magical but as you start growing up you start coming under the expectations of others, to make your place in the world. In the end when it's time to go; you just wish you had a little more time, you wish you had done things a little differently but it doesn't matter. The truth is your time on this earth is over and nothing could change that. The ones who care for you think that they can save you (just like her father tried to stop Buddha) but they can't. The whole point of the movie, for me atleast, is death. It is inevitable and although we try to think so little of it while we are alive, but when we look in its eyes, we realise that only Death can give Life meaning. This thought just makes you admire the world, makes you kind of carefree. WHAT A MOVIE!!!!
// This thought just makes you admire the world, makes you kind of carefree. // Right interpretation, wrong lesson. You should be more careful about yourself & your surroundings and try to act responsibly with everyone & everything you interact with because we live & die from the kind of emotions we feel from the actions we take. It is about taking responsibility of our actions.
Wow, I wouldn't have believe that western music instruments can produce the sounds of the Gandharvas. Ps:- Those celestial beings are called Gandharvas. Plus there are many like Kinnars, Yakshas, etc
You know this part of the score always lifts me up. I realize in the context of the film the music can make others feel very different but when I just listen to the score I feel so much more hopeful about life. There is such true beauty in this music.
This piece, and the emotions we have tied to it from the movie, contradict so strongly with eachother that this piece has been placed in the uncanny valley.
You can interpret the ending in many different ways, the movie itself is based on the Buddhist ideology that life is suffering but true strength comes from finding the joy in it and identifying something to live for and Not from emptying yourself of emotion or filling yourself with hatred. Alternatively many buddhists can see the ending as kaguya’s end of suffering, thus making the final scenes of this movie somewhat bittersweet.
piggy66 When you are watching it you are so angry at the Celestials for taking her away, but instead of dramatic sad music that would suit the scene, there is a happy orchestral piece celebrating the return of Kaguya. It doesn't work with our emotions, but it works with what is happening in the scene.
Byronpat Ah , in the perspective of the celestials , it is a great event that deserve all the celebration that Princess Kaguya , after being exiled , finally returns to the moon.
The scene in the film was terrifying and dreamlike (mixture of hope and fear) in the same time for its bliss of inhumanity that is proper to transcendentality and religiosity, both children of death (i.e. separation from life).
Just finished watching the movie yesterday and I was enchanted with this music. It's really good i might gonna rewatch this to stress myself even more lol
It kinda reminds me of Bach's Cantata BWV 208. Btw, "Princess Kaguya" must be my favorite animation. The ending is beautiful sad and touched me deeply.
The Celestial Beings were not the villains of the movie; this music is happy because they are saving her from a lifetime of misery. The Celestial beings only got involved when Kaguya called out for help while she was being assaulted- the father, in his greed to improve his status and wealth- let the prince in to assault his daughter. She even said she'd kill herself if she had to marry the prince and her father STILL didn't respect that no meant no- he chose wealth over his daughter. And he would have done it again. And again. And again. The real tragedy of Princess Kaguya is that she was the victim of male ego.
You are speaking nonsense. It wasnt male ego, it was that her father truly belived that she was going to be happy with the Emperor. You just need to have context, remember this is a fairy tale from Japan, where the Emperor is the biggest figure of honor.
@@wton She said no. No means no. Her father ignored her refusal of consent and she got assaulted and traumatised because of it. Her father just wanted power and status, even after she said that she'd sooner kill herself.
The music made the scene extremely BEAUTIFUL and TERRIFYING at the same time.

THis music is like a hand grenade wrapped up in colorful paper and ribbons to look like a chocolate easter egg. You wrap it up full of expectation and then it rips your guts out.
Good comment!
For someone who has never watched the movie, this is a happy song. But for me, this song is one of the most haunted songs I have heard
I'm smiling and crying at the same time. Is it normal?
This scene is so happy-sad.
Life doesn't cease being funny or joyous just because of a tragedy. And it doesn't cease being tragic just because it's funny or joyous.
I think happy-sad is the most life-affirming feeling there is in the span of our existence.
Kuraujia you meant nostalgic??
This music is so beautiful but I can't listen to it without ninjas cutting onions

Sounds so Heavenly, it makes me levitate in my mind... Glad i watched The Tales of the Princess Kayuga.
Moon Asshole's theme.
Kaguya, come baaaaack. :c
Omg lmao! xD ikr! They are alien moon assholes. Took kaguya :(
Moon people: beying assholes from Kaguya-hime no Monogatari to Houseki no Kuni.
Lolll
Can we appreciate Joe Hisaishi's performance as a conductor here? His expressions as the music plays are just magnificent
I cry like a baby every time I see this scene in the movie.
Such a happy and sad song!
I think this beautiful song is befitting of Buddhism. Though there is sadness around, happiness can still be found. By being attached she encountered suffering, but to remove it is to find peace. That's just my take. I love this movie so much!!!
Keliʻi Grothmann That's a pretty good take on the ending!
+Koa G that is exactly what I've been reading in so many yoga sutras and texts, that is the exact message!
I thought exactly the same! Love this movie so much
+Koa G It's actually very much a criticism of Buddhism and precisely this emphasis in this religion that this world is only full of suffering and only in the next can full bliss and happiness be obtained, instead of building a happy life here on this Earth and in this life. This is also in keeping with criticisms of Buddhism in East Asia throughout history, particularly by Taoists.
Quq Balam Fascinating. I see that.

いやいや天才すぎますよ、、、😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭

0:12 this part always surprises me no matter how much I listen
I know, right ? This song has so many emotions. We can literally FEEL the song. It's so... powerful. I mean, it's like it reaches directly your heart !!! You're trapped in the scene, in this reality, in.. in this emotion . I want to cry each time I listen to it. It's like it reveals us a secret. How to be free, how soon we'll get to know how creator
Seeing how many instruments are involved makes me feel a whole heap of respect for soundtrack writers like Joe Hisaishi that can put such cohesive and beautiful pieces together. Aaah and now I'm tearing up thinking of the scene ;__;
Death from ego and the material concepts. When concepts dissolve, the self as we know it dissolves. All is bliss! All is one!

なにか一本抜けてるような不気味な旋律だよね。
My brother would have made exactly this observation, in another country, in another language and culture. I miss my brother. Thank you, friend.
久石さんは日本の誇りです
She basically was warning everyone of her suicide and she killed herself to not experience the pain anymore
Warning to those who have yet to see this brilliant animated film, there are comments containing spoilers. Scroll down at your own risk.
Elie Tutone hehe! That is so funny! Thanks for saying it, I just smiled at it in laughter! Thanks again,

thank you, you saved me :)
I actually didn't cry at the end of this movie. I was just...shocked. My jaw hanging. I remember when the credits rolled, I was just thinking to myself...."what?"
one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written - full stop.
While watching I became happy and sad simultaneously. I couldn’t figure out why kaguya was sad and for few moments she becomes happy and then again sad .
「怖くない」が1番怖い事だって分かる曲
I've listened to every ghibli songs because ghibli is my life, but this one does really give me chills
Right interpretation, wrong lesson. You should be more careful about yourself & your surroundings and try to act responsibly with everyone & everything you interact with because we live & die from the kind of emotions we feel from the actions we take. It is about taking responsibility of our actions.
Hisaishi-sama is a genius. Thank you sir God bles
初めて聴いた時は楽しげな音楽だなぁとしか思っていなかったんだけど、映画のあのシーンでこの曲が流れた時はものすごく美しくて怖いなぁと思った
This song literally makes me cry.what is going on during this music is so sad. yet it's so upbeat for all the wrong reasons
Brilliant! Joe Hisaishi at some of his very best!
the juxtaposition of the scene and this music. Joe Hisaishi, you're a scary madman, genius, but mad
This is soooo beautiful...Joe Hisaishi-sensei's music always touches the heart!!!!!!!
I love the Otsostuki music so comforting to newborns!
This piece, and the emotions we have tied to it from the movie, contradict so strongly with eachother that this piece has been placed in the uncanny valley.
I never knew such a happy tune could bring such resentment. But hey, not every story has a happy ending, does it?
You can interpret the ending in many different ways, the movie itself is based on the Buddhist ideology that life is suffering but true strength comes from finding the joy in it and identifying something to live for and Not from emptying yourself of emotion or filling yourself with hatred. Alternatively many buddhists can see the ending as kaguya’s end of suffering, thus making the final scenes of this movie somewhat bittersweet.
this song makes you feel happy and sad and the feeling that you have no choice but to accept whatever is coming your way.
Here after crying my eyes out in public tonight (thanks GKIDS).
This music is, well, amazing. I just find it just so fitting for the majesty of the film, but yet the scene it is used for is SO contrapuntal!
Byronpat what do u maen by that
piggy66 When you are watching it you are so angry at the Celestials for taking her away, but instead of dramatic sad music that would suit the scene, there is a happy orchestral piece celebrating the return of Kaguya. It doesn't work with our emotions, but it works with what is happening in the scene.
Byronpat You have to understand that they are celestial beings so they are not the bad guys of the movie, the "bad guys" here are the human feelings

The music makes me tear up to. So sad.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. It touches both immense sadness and joy upon my soul.

Brilliant Joe Hisaishi and New Japan Philharmonic World Dream Orchestra!
Praise all the musician who's made this BEAUTIFUL Music..
It kinda reminds me of Bach's Cantata BWV 208. Btw, "Princess Kaguya" must be my favorite animation. The ending is beautiful sad and touched me deeply.
one of the most emotional scenes ive ever seen.... i had an epiphany
How the fuck a song so happy can make me cry only for listening to it?! That film is ART
Listening to this makes me happy and hopeful. The scene was really sad, though.
Gracias, gracias por su música.
Es probablemente de lo más hermoso (y aún triste) que escucharé en toda mi larga vida.💖
After hearing this song while watching this movie,
My mind was like:You don't let me cry,you don’t let me smile..
There is something about this song♥
