Musician Vlog / Mia Morris /Ep. 5 “Music City baby!”/ Nashville Drummer, Musician, Songwriter

- This vlog episode is about the last few week’s shows in Nashville, an incredible night at The Grand Ole Opry and a rehearsal at an amazing practice facility owned by John & Martina McBride. Much of my time at the Opry was not recorded as I took in an experience that I will never forget. I was able to wander in and around the stage, green rooms, dressing rooms, rehearsals, performances, living music legends and an unmistakable vibe of music history. My favorite part of the magic night was just how accessible and genuinely welcoming all the musicians were with me and each other. I had the strange feeling that everyone there was as happy as I was just to be a part of the night.
There are a bunch of song clips in this vlog and many more artists but these are the songs and artists you hear in order. Jesus & Joan Jett by Kasey Tyndall, Nothing On My Love by Stevie Woodward, Rock, Not A Rolling Stone by Caroline Marquard and Wrong For You by Livy Jeanne. There are two very quick clips at the Opry from Runaway June and Levon. The rehearsal section at the end is with my girl Bailey James and in those clips are two of her songs called Kiss Me Goodbye and Brand New Old Soul.
The song that I use in the beginning and end of this video is one of my new originals called, “One More Day”. As it turns out, it works pretty well as a vlog theme song! Lately. I’ve had several people inquire about how they might be able to help me and if I sell any merchandise. It is very flattering and generous of you to inquire about that but at this point, what would help me the most is to keep growing an audience of people that have a genuine interest in my music and my musical journey. These are some things that could help with that goal right now.

There is a SHARE link right under the video player that makes it pretty easy. If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, post my videos on there and encourage your friends to share them as well. So as you can see, there are lots of things you can do that will help me if you’d like. I’m 14 years old and I want to be a musician when I grow up. I’ve played many instruments but the one that I feel at home on is a drum set. Drums have always felt natural to me somehow even when I was very young and even though I play lots of other instruments, it’s generally just an excuse to get to eventually record a drum track. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great song writer so I also spend some of my time trying to learn the magic of songwriting along the way. I thought it would help me keep focused if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. Hopefully, I will keep doing it, keep loving music and keep getting better.

Mt biking on the Creeper Trail.
:) Our family used to bike a bunch together. We'd go on city rides and only trails once or twice a year but it was at least once a week for 10 years. We started on tag-a-longs and would do big organized night rides with hundreds of tricked out lit up bikes and music. That has gone to more like once a month now that my brother is driving but I've got so many fond memories of rides. I got turned on to Primus on rides!!! Ha - that's funny... Have a great ride :)
Now that sounds like it was/is really cool, what a great family event. The 13 of us had a fantastic time all made it safe. If you have not been on the Creeper Trail in Damascus V.A I highly recommend your family doing this. Trail is in great shape.
The power of Nashville. I mentioned that in my remote neck of the woods, long ago, that the guitar players always carried a copy of a music biz mag. There were ads for people who wanted to submit songs for sale. A young woman sold one for about $50. It got picked up and recorded by an artist. Others tried but had no success. The same girl sold a couple more but they didn't get recorded. It helps to be at the centre of your business.
Hey Mia. Sorry, I haven't abandoned you, just been busy. I respect your humility, and the fact that you are so willing to pay your dues for your shot at the big time, but you are easily as talented as some of those artists and more talented than most of them. It's awesome that you have these opportunities, but don't be afraid to step up and say that you are capable of more.
I know that you're young and have a lot to learn about the music industry, but you are a real force, girl. I'm sure that your parents are keeping your progress in check, and that's just good parenting, but run, Mia! Break the chains! Seriously, produce an album. If I'll buy it, so will thousands of others. Once people become aware of you, the sky's the limit, dear.
I know that you consider yourself a drummer primarily, but so do Phil Collins and Dave Grohl. You get my point.
You'll get there regardless, but I feel that you could take longer strides on your path to success. We'll all be watching anxiously despite how long it takes. You're awesome, woman! Peace
That is a motivating comment!! Thanks for your confidence in me and even more thank you for your true support. Sometimes I'm busting to go but I talk about the business and the bigger picture quite a bit with my folks and more often than not, I feel like the smart approach is to try to put off my chances until I'm so prepared that it's really more of a formality. I don't know if that's really a possibility but if I could learn from all these people I play for and have all this experience where it's not me that is getting passed on? Seems like I'm usually the youngest one in the room anyway so maybe now is the time to grind and keep quietly learning and improving. I guess what I'm saying is, I feel like I might get a chance some day and I want to make it an easy decision for whoever gives me that chance.

I'm trying to learn the music and the business. It looks to me like both are important...
Ask a lot of questions, to learn but also because people love to hear themselves talk. In an interview situation, ask probing questions that you either know the answers to or for clarification of just what it is that will be expected of you. Never be afraid to pick up the phone or just show up and go to their office and introduce yourself. I think of the scene in the movie wall street with Charlie Sheen AKA Bud Fox persisting to meet Gordon Gecko. It finally happened, he made a lot of money then went to jail.

It is exciting to see you making progress with your music! I always look forward to your vlog posts and to see what you have done and with whom. Keep it in perspective, listen to your parents. I saw those church pews somewhere before. At the time it just looked like funky junky punky furniture. Now it looks like historic furniture because Mia's been there.. I think it must have been in the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter." I saw that movie 3 or 4 times. I came close to the "Opry" is a speeding car on the closest Interstate.
All of this music experience with different groups/people is so awesome. What better way for a girl to get her name and talent out there. Mia Morris is in high demand. You rock Mia!

When I was kid, my father took me to the Grand Ole Opry. It was such an amazing place. It must have been incredible to sit up on the stage for the show. Glad you enjoyed it. I still remember it all these years later!
It was thrilling, inspiring and educational. I had no idea how professional something like that could be.

Nashville is so peaceful compared to the hustle and bustle of the major cities in the united states but mia certainly deserves all the rich splendor that hollywood has to offer.. I also appreciate the departure into the country bluegrass style of music that the suffragettes are experimenting with!!
I got to play with some older studio players last week on a show for an artist names Laura. I was really glad I was in Nashville that night. It was a dobro, upright bass, acoustic and cajon and it was really, really satisfying to be a part of.
You're super cooly talented young one Mia. . . I've been following your posts since I first saw you on UA-cam playing drums of course. Keep up your good works and stay humble coz that would be the key to every musician's success on my own perception.

Mia Morris Some years back I was kinda interested in being a band mgr., but it didn't work out. That was at the time when Taylor Swift was up and coming as a music artist. I had been talking to one of her publicists and she sent me personal copy Taylor's first album. I never dreamed she would be one the top artists ever at the time. I always thought her first album was the best album. So,I have no doubt you can do the same if not better.

It has been exciting lately but I don't think anything different is coming soon. I've just sort of taken a step forward where a lot of musicians are finding out about me in Nashville. There is so much going on here all the time that I think there will be a lot of work but it will all be at the level I am right now. I think that's where I need to stay for awhile. That was great, where did you go for rehearsal, SIR? Grand Ole Opry is fun I went in early 80's just before Minnie Pearl passed Away she was sick at the time but did get to meet Bill Anderson and Roy Acuff, and also watched from Backstage, glad you are getting more gigs congrats
It's a facility that is owned by John & Martina McBride I guess. I think it's called Blackbird academy. It was on the NE side of Nashville. I had no idea what I was about to see at the Opry. That is what professional looks like - now I know.

Gorgeous looking bass at 5:30 ish...Tell me all about it pleas...;-)) And talking of upside down & back to front, Jimmy Haslip plays a 6 string RH bass left handed with the big fat string at the bottom & the little skinny one at the top. Confuses my brain yet he's one of the finest! If you get a moment, google 'Postcards' by Yellowjackets. A beautiful bass solo. One of m 'lessons' back in the '80's was to learn it. And I did... Glad you're doing all this stuff..;-))
That bass is my first really nice bass. It's an Ibanez SR 1300. That is really wild! Wow. Nobody will ask to sit in when he's on the gig :) Thank you for taking the time.

I am not a big fan of the Song Suffragettes but I was able to "suffer" thru it ha ha. News flash suffragettes, women can vote in public elections now ha ha. Nice work Mia. I hope I can see you sometime in my hometown.
I don't listen to much of this type of music except when I'm playing for these guys but meeting all of these artists and writers as they come through Nashville has been a huge deal for me so far. Coming up with parts on the fly to songs I've never heard before, in front of a big crowd... then going to middle school the next morning..! I'm gonna learn a lot along the way about song structure, performing.. Anyway, I'm clearly rambling.. and tired. I hope I play in your hometown as well :) And it will be louder than a show with the SS's - I promise :) - Goodnight.
Yes that would make me very nervous too not knowing the songs ahead of time. You are for sure getting good experience and building your confidence. As far as song structure, my recommendation is to have a clear bridge section that has a high contrast from the chorus (possibly both in rhythm and even key), and for each different chorus, change it up a little like add something each time you go back to it to build it up, for example, in your great song Something There, add a tambourine for the last chorus. You are doing quite well for your age so keep going. I am a fan.

I think the light has a strange effect on your eyes. Maybe it's an effect of your sweater and the camera lens. The colour of your baby blues keeps switching back and forth from blue to the green richness of a new mown lawn!
Ok, after looking once again at female drummers and seeing none of them were interesting to watch, not that they were not good! I ask myself this question, what is it YOU and SINA do that separates you from others?

None of us seem to want that.. I would totally go for a half day starting next year but I would miss my friends even if it is during social studies. I'm really not sure they allow that sort of thing in TN public schools.

Mia did you see the original part of the stage? I think it's in a circle. A whole lot of famous people have stood on that part of the stage. They rebuilt the stage but keep that circle for the history part of it. I knew you would make it, you are doing great. Wish I could buy ya a frosty on me. Oh well you take care. =^•^=. P.S. Post us a picture of you standing on that part of the stage.
I was told about the circle but that part of the stage is in front of the curtain when it's down between acts. That picture is going to have to wait until I'm part of the show... :)

It's a cool spot for me at this gig. All of the girls are supportive of each other but they are also trying to distinguish themselves. My job is to try to make them each sound better which is something new and different for them. It's quite rewarding.

Love him. DM has been on the list just never my final choice yet. He's really a pain in the butt about playing any sort of repeating kick pattern which is a problem for someone like me that likes the idea of getting the parts really tight... He just jams along. Which is awesome, just tough to memorize.
