  • Royal CBM is the Dutch employers association for the furniture and interior industry.
Each year 1,2 million mattresses are thrown away. CBM’s goal is a sustainable green recycling of mattresses. We are at the beginning of a new effective method of mattress recycling.
Our target is a 50% decrease in the usage of virgin materials, and 4 instead of 40 different components.
In the year 2050 we will use only recyclable materials in the production of mattresses.
A number of Dutch companies is specialized in dismantling of mattresses. They distract raw materials from the mattresses for the steel industry, packaging industry, production of insulation and flooring materials.
However the market for secondary materials is limited (and a significant part of the waste stream cannot be recycled.)
Chemical recycling is foreseen as a breakthrough-technology for (the treatment of )plastics and other complex waste streams.
CBM, as a branch organisation, has brought the chain together to investigate the possibilities of using materials from old mattresses in a thermochemical way.
The Netherlands is at the beginning of a new era of mattress recycling.
An exciting cooperation between producers, retailers, scientists and recycling companies working on a green and sustainable future.
