I specifically remember a few episodes ago Whoopi telling young people to "get over it" and that "every generation went through the same thing".

Whoopi was young in a world where a minimum wage job let you rent your own apartment, have a car & go to college. She just lives in her own rich people bubble now. It's clear she has no idea any more how ordinary people live.

Although there is truth to it. The youth of today wants what their parents had after working for 20 years. But they want it now and without working for it.
This guys a hack. Any economist who believes in a minimum wage doesn’t understand economics.

They’re not mutually exclusive thoughts. He addressed what she was saying too. Every generation has their issues to overcome. Screens and algorithms are one of ours/theirs. Also, what he said was very true and celebrated by Whoopi as well. “you can have it all but not all at once.” And we keep being told “balance is everything.” And he’s saying no, that’s not how it works. I see this with my nices and nephews. They want everything right.now. Whereas my parents (and I) had to work and save for things and we had to work hard so that we could have it all. Right now, there are forces holding young people back - housing, education, wages - but that’s not all. We can work through these hard times. So can you all maybe give Whoop a break and focus more on the overall message? Because it was a really powerful one.

What is with all these crazy comments re. Whoopi?! That’s what you all got out of this really intelligent and nuanced discussion? She’s never said anything wrong or false. She has addressed the issues facing young people but she’s also said every generation faces hard things. And the professor validated her and all points. Young people do have to understand that balance comes eventually - but at the beginning of your work lives you probably will have to work hard. And so much of our society is instant-gratification-based these days, also because of social media and because every day you can see what appears to be very successful people. ALL the things they spoke about were true and Whoop lit up at “You can have it all but not all right away.” Did people not hear that message as well? I honestly don’t get it.

Ya’ll are so ignorant and actually showing me that you are adding to the uninteligence of American society. Every time Whoopi talks about the struggle you think she can…she had an experience of the struggle and isn’t saying she’s where she was. Over unintelligent and people that just want to make company out of their misery. It’s quite sad and reflective of people’s ability to comprehend and retain any information! Just dumb!

    • @WrasslinKing
      @WrasslinKing 6 місяців тому

@@tanja0411 These crazy comments are acknowledging Whoopi's past comments dismissing young people's plight. Sorry you don't see it that way. Saying every generation faces hard things when the stats show this is the first time young people are less fortunate and have a worse outlook than their parents is exactly the same logic as saying All Lives Matter. It seeks to diminish the reality of the situation. Was her generation paying 6% of their paycheck to Social Security that won't be there for them when they older? No. Was her generation priced out of buying a home even on modest wages? No. Was her generation subject to the corruption that SEC vs Citizens United brought about legalizing political bribery? No. I could go on. People are calling out whoopi because she's a millionaire decades removed from a struggle that wasn't even in the same dimension as what generations today are facing and acting like she has some wisdom on it.

I am a big fan of The View but I find it incredibly frustrating and annoying to continuously discuss topics affecting younger generations, without the voice of the younger generation.
Stop speaking for the younger generation & making us seem like we do not want to work hard and succeed. We are the most educated and activated generation. The idea that we don’t want to work until we go to the grave, simply comes from the fact that we’ve seen old folks work till death, and life is not about that.

We live in a society that wants to control womens bodies but not support the children that come as a result of that forced control. We live in a society where corporations despite having massive profits still want to take advantage of both their employees and the consumers they serve. We live in a society that forgot what it means to address an adult as they say they would like to be addressed because they think their religion gives them the right to oppress others who may not believe in the same doctrine. We live in a society that understands that the American Dream is no longer attainable through hard work because each time they work twice as hard the goal post is pushed back four times further and they understand that the only way the break through the ponzi scheme of the American dream is to break through the system with a cheat of get rich quick schemes or instant fame. Working hard is not getting the results it used to get when the system is rigged against you, working hard these days only allows you to barely scrape by. That is why people are choosing to just live, they are choosing balance because tomorrow is never promised.

Try getting a job when the entire country is in rubble. The generation that lost most of their fathers in WWI or WWII. What these older people don’t understand is that it’s not that we’re concerned with work life balance because we’re somehow lazier than prior generations. It’s because our economy has forced everyone into a at least a dual income household in which everybody is constantly working just to make ends meet.
And even for those of us that listened to the advice that “everyone needs a college degree”, “go into tech because there will aLlWaYs be a need for tech jobs in the future”, understand that our economy and technology is moving at such a rapid and volatile rate that this advice has not panned out for the vast majority of young people.
Currently we have countless software engineers (with experience), who can’t secure a mid-level developer position, who spent the last decade plus learning and working to get a leg up and compete but now can’t receive so much as an interview after sending out hundreds or even thousands of resumes. I’m not even talking about my own experience. Im talking about what much of the industry is up against at this very moment. All while student debt, housing, and the cost of living in general is through the roof.
And we’re supposed to take the women of the view seriously when they say there’s a problem with work ethic in the younger generation? Please…

To all the people complaining about Whoopi - maybe listen to this really intelligent and insightful discussion again. Whoopi lit up at “You can have it all but not all right away.” She acknowledged all the barriers facing young people but which generations haven’t had to face (different) very difficult
obstacles as well? Can’t all things be true? We are in an instant-gratification society right now and it’s not helping anyone, least of all younger people. And there are so many pseudo-therapists on social media and everywhere and all the messages about “balance.” There can also be beauty in working hard and saving to get the things you want and that’s not preached that much anymore. That doesn’t mean you have to be in toxic and unhealthy environments and we do have to always be mindful of our physical and mental health but there isn’t anything wrong with working hard and saving. While you’e working you can still have fun, meet your partner, friends, etc.
Why people can’t just take wisdom and knowledge from a discussion (this was a really really good one) and instead have to focus on the negative I don’t understand. I guess better to always stay out of the comment section. I was interested to see what people thought but the top comments were shocking to me. They weren’t insightful or positive or anything. I think a lot of the fight for "balance" is due to young people feeling they have no future, so they see no point in "going the extra mile". They've seen older workers play into that game, and end up with sob stories come review time, where no raises or promotions happened, and yet executives receives big bonuses...then later those older workers get laid off just to knock the stock price up a dollar or two.
So if they see there's no point to working hard, then they won't. They would if they are putting money towards investment and growth for themselves, but their wages won't allow them to do it with things being so expensive, and companies requiring them to be in the office in some expensive city they must live in.
Job hopping? Of course. I mentioned the "sob stories" which equate to no raises or promotions. This has been happening for a long time, so people learned the only way to get a raise and/or promotion is to jump ship. Employers broke that social contract, so they have to deal with high turnover.
We don't need to just give welfare or handouts, but a lot of what will fix a lot of these issues are employers deciding that shareholders do not need so much priority, and some must be given to the stakeholders.

I love that they finally had this perspective on the show, it’s so refreshing instead of the lazy “blame the youth” rhetoric that every generation seems to fall for

Whoopi should NOT have been part of this conversation after her 'get over it' stance from months ago.

How does the Algebra work? Scott says: "you can have it all, just just can't have it all now" but also says that housing is up 4x, education is up 2x, and minimum wage hasn't risen. I don't see how that equation aligns with "you can have it all" even after you take Scott's advice and work for 20 years without balance.

I wish Mr. Galloway had more time to elaborate. His mentioning of empathy not being a zero-sum game is to call out those that suggest or believe that being supportive of men, of being in favor of helping them improve, is somehow anti-women (which is a preposterous notion. As preposterous as being "pro-women" is anti-men.).

This is so true and we are living proof that what he is saying is spot on. My son enter flight school at the hands of Sallie Mae, one of the most corrupt lending institutions but we had to take the loan. We are MIDDLE CLASS people who don't live lavishly, spend whenever but we have to watch our funds. We are NOW living in Biden's world of inflation with EVERYTHING going up. Wages as it was said, have remained stagnant, giving to lazy and taking from workers seems to be ok. many will say that this is the best country. FOR WHO???????? If you are rich, a political THIEF, Lobbyist, CEO, POLITICIAN then I would say yes but other than that, no its far from the best country.

"You can have it all, you just can't have it all at once." Brilliant. Unfortunately the younger generation has no clue what that is. They're entitled and want everything NOW, which I believe is a result of how they were raised (parents giving them everything and not making them earn it, and parents who spent their entire lives shielding their kids from feeling bad), and having their phones in their faces 24/7 for instant gratification, no matter if the instant gratification is a load of crap or not (everybody gets a trophy).

Transferring money from the young to the old is the foundation of Social Security. It’s not going away. Young people should be advised that their peak earning years will be in their 50s. Until then, work diligently, spend frugally and save aggressively.
