  • The empress Helena was the wife of Constantius I Chlorus and mother of Constantine the Great. She was also a devout Christian and a saint of the Catholic Church.
This brief biography of Saint Helen was recorded in the Life of the Blessed Emperor Constantine which was penned by Bishop Eusebius Pamphilus not long after Helena's death in AD 330.

All that digging up crosses and revering Holy Places turned Christianity from a spiritual practise into a religion with a pilgrimage route. Why were Christians not the slightest bit bothered going on pilgrimages to the Holy Land until Helena was sent by Constantine to find places associated with Jesus ?

Christians revered relics of the saints practically from day one. The reason pilgrimages to the Holy Land started after Helena is because the holy places had been covered over and desecrated by Hadrian after the Bar Kokhba War. In fact, Jerusalem was renamed Aelia Capitolina at that time, and Golgatha was covered over and a pagan temple was built atop it. After Helena and Constantine, all of the pagan accretions were cleared away and churches built in their stead.

The reason is because Christianity was generally illegal before the time of Constantine, and Christian holy places were frequently destroyed by the civil authorities. This is why most of the oldest surviving Christian relics are found in catacombs--hidden away underground where the authorities couldn't find them. After Constantine made Christianity legal and indeed, favored, all that changed and people could freely travel to the holy places without fear of molestation.
