  • Gordon Waite demonstrates the design and construction details for an altitude bearing for an 18" Renegade telescope. Ebony Star laminate provides the bearing surface, which is supported by a four-layer, over-sized structure. Special construction techniques make the bearing rigid and strong, while the unique design features give the telescope extraordinary performance characteristics.

I thought you made mirrors and outsourced the wood work. I now know you do both. Those 1/4" dowels sure are nice. Thanks for posting.

Hi Gordon, always great to watch your videos. May i ask you, for what the role is used in the table? Thank you, Muhsin.

Hi! The white table is actually a drum sander that I recently built. It has a cylindrical sandpaper drum that is about 30" long, and I designed it especially for sanding telescope parts, like the rings and circles in our Renegade. I built it so the top was flat and the edges are clean, so it is also a good work surface in general, and useful for clamping during glue-ups.

Gordon, I love your work. May I ask about what CNC machine you use, or do you contract out your CNC work?

I have a CNC Shark for small work, but mostly use a 5' x 10' Shopbot.

answer me this please sir , if the best telescope is the biggest telescope , then why isnt the best microscope tiny ? anyone with common sense knows its all about the lenses , a hand held device is sufficient for both

It's all about the wave nature of light. The Hubble Space Telescope sure isn't hand-held!

Jeez dude, perhaps start with an education before stating daft absolutes ("a hand held device is sufficient for both") and calling that common sense. If you are interested in this stuff take physics in school, it will give you a good grounding in a wide variety of subjects even if you don't pursue it beyond GCSE.

@@tyrantworm7392 according to your belief system a hand held device was sufficient for Galileo to record and document many astronomical observations that support the current model today that some perceive as factual evidence that supports many THEORIES, This Physics you talk of, do you mean, as in real PHYSICAL study of real observable physicality, with real provable & demonstrable explanations or Meta-physics (Mathematics) the study of proving un-observable facts by calculating complicated algebra and number sequences of THEORIES (eg speed of light) as FACTS ?
