"Jesus Of Suburbia" Lyrics:[Part 1]
I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus of Suburbia
From the bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of
Soda pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones I got away with
And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me
Get my television fixed
Sitting on my crucifix
The living room or my private womb
While the Moms and Brads are away
To fall in love and fall in debt
To alcohol and cigarettes and Mary Jane
To keep me insane,
Doing someone else's cocaine
And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me
[Part 2: City Of The Damned]
At the center of the Earth
In the parking lot
Of the 7-11 where I was taught
The motto was just a lie
It says home is where your heart is
But what a shame
Cause everyone's heart
Doesn't beat the same
It's beating out of time
City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care
I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of the shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less
City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care
[Part 3: I Don't Care]
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care
[X4]
I don't care
Everyone is so full of shit
Born and raised by hypocrites
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle always to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east
We are the stories and disciples
Of the Jesus of suburbia
Land of make believe
And that don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!
I don't care! [x4]
[Part 4: Dearly Beloved]
Dearly beloved are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure
Oh, therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse
[Part 5: Tales Of Another Broken Home]
To live and not to breathe
Is to die In tragedy
To run, to run away
To find what you believe
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
This town that don't exist
So I run
I run away
To the light of masochist
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time
I don't feel any shame
I won't apologize
When there ain't nowhere you can go
Running away from pain
When you've been victimized
Tales from another broken home
You're leaving...
You're leaving...
You're leaving...
Ah you're leaving home...

Long live brother
For me personal this is the best song ever. The structure, the lyrics, the music. I can listen to it over and over again and it still gives me goosebumps. Makes me feel something I never felt in other songs.
Man, that's really cool. I get caught up in certain songs when I'm feeling a particular way. Sometimes I feel like this song is ripping my guts out for all to see, and other times, it's Chevelle or Dark New Day doing the same thing. I seem to recognize what goes into a song, and reap all the benefits of what comes out of it, I really like it. I kind of do the same thing with people... If I can break you down and make you reflect... I did my job.
Dearly beloved are you listening such an amazing key change, love this I make sure everyone I know listens 😅❤xxxxx

Anyone else feeling like they lived this music video in their younger years?
I'm an adult now, with a stable home life that I built myself. I'm still every bit the gothic hippie punk I was at 17, but I'm medicated and I'm happy. It's kind of like nostalgia when I watch this, but a more real nostalgia, where you remember the good, the bad and the horrific all with the same bittersweet smile.
i'm a teenager currently, and struggling with a shitty home life and a lot of mental health issues. this song is one of the things keeping me above water - i can't count the times i've looped it in my headphones at full volume to drown out yelling. i'm eternally grateful for green day and this song rock on everyone \m/
edit: thanks for all your lovely replies guys, it truly means the world. im in a lot better of a place then i was when i wrote this comment originally, and partly it was ur replies that carried me through
you're not alone kid
Hang in there bud - it's not your fault ❤🙏
Im on your side man
Please, remember that the situation you’re in right now is not permanent. You will leave that home life at some point, and though that is extremely scary. It’ll allow you the space and comfort to heal from all the crap you’ve gone through. Take it from me, someone whose family is the source of all their mental health problems: when you get out you’ll truly start your life. What I mean by that is you will basically be completely reborn when you don’t gave that negativity constantly weighing you down.
You may not be alonein this but that doesn’t mean your situation is completely relatable to 99% of humans on Earth. I say that, because I feel it’s very important to remind you that you is all you truly have. You can only count on YOURSELF to change YOUR life in order to better YOURSELF. I emphasize that cause no one properly nailed it into my head.
Don’t give up, don’t think that this is all there is, don’t let these scars ruin your life like I allowed my scars to. Trust me when I say this, the fact you’re still breathing is a testament to how badass you are. Remember that. Remember you are strong. Please, remember these things.
Much love, i hope you are able to find peace and happiness soon. Stay strong and keep pushing, friend.

"It says home is where your heart is, but what a shame, 'cause everyone's heart, doesn't beat the same."
i dont get that someone pls explain that phrase to me
Serdar BİÇER it’s in the third act of the song. Jimmy/Billie is saying how everyone’s homes are different and the typical mold of an American household is flawed. Not everyone wants or can live that type of life. Everyone loves something different.
Coupled with the next verse, he’s saying how his home is different than the typical. A broken home and he wishes it could be better. A type of thankful resentment. Resentment because of what it turned him into and how nobody cares but thankful because its who he is.

Went through a hard period during the release of this album (Was in the same age) and so many years have passed and so many memories come back to me now.
And yeah, it is absolutely worth to keep fighting, bringing this little light of hope deep inside you and keep going to make it shine more and more brighter.
I just can repeat the words you have already written down: Find that little piece of hope and keep going!

This song reminds me of bohemian rhapsody, in that not only is it seemingly the pinnacle of the band's creative abilities, but also this mishmash of contrasting sections that create this beautifully lengthy piece you wouldn't dare cut any time from. Effectively, it's a masterpiece.

Love that a band known for its 3 minute songs wrote the perfect 9 minute song.
This song is a complete masterpiece. I was always a fan of Green Day, but the American Idiot album is truly one of the best albums ever made. "Home is where the heart is and what a shame because everyone's heart doesn't beat the same". Mannn. That lyric alone represents my entire teenage years and twenties. Always trying to find that one person who would make me complete. And the best part about Green Day is that they are phenomenal live. They sound exactly like the recorded version, they are seasoned musicians and it shows. I saw them on their American Idiot tour and I will never forget it. It was a little strange because I had been a fan since the Dookie album but most of the people at the concert were people who had just discovered them so when I lit up my joint, I got quite a few side looks lol. I kept thinking, do you know what concert you are at? But whatever, I still had one of the best nights of my life. Seen them three times total and every time they bring it. If you ever get the chance to see them live, take it, you won't regret it!!

Interesting Fact: Billie Joe Armstrong stated in an interview: "This song broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it’s everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out."
He also added:
" ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, ‘holy s-t, I can’t believe we just made this thing,’ and there was this fear, like there’s no looking back now."
Armstrong told MTV:
"Right after I came up with [the phrase] ‘American Idiot,’ I came up with [the album’s protagonist], ‘Jesus of Suburbia, I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I’ve never really read it?’ So, there’s no burning bush, but there’s burning towns and ethics."
This is art, this is immortal.

Low and behold, it wasn't a phase, and im still an emo/punk/alternative kid at 32 years old
Not much has changed, other than a fuck load of responsibilities and mental illness 🤟🖤
Oh, I feel exactly the same. I understand you.
Same!!! Everyone said it was just a phase and I'll grow out of it but I'm still alternative. More into metal and goth music these days tho, but Green Day will always have a special place in my heart. 🖤
Same. 35 years old. With two kids who love the same music I do. It’s great getting to jam out with my little minions.
I'm 35 🤘🤘
I couldn't have said it better myself! 😊 I know this sounds super SUPER cliche, but when I was a teenager, this song was the soundtrack to my life...I couldn't get enough of it, I was obsessed..I honestly don't think I'd be who I am today if it weren't for Jesus of Suburbia. This song was and will always be a part of me...Green day goes hard 😎💚💚💚💚💚💚
American Idiot is American Idiot a masterpiece 🤘🏽
"I don't love you, you don't even get to be a memory."
Nice fucking tattoo then.
Classic.
Released as the fifth and final single from the group's seventh studio album, "American Idiot," and the second song on the album. With the song running for 9 minutes and 8 seconds, it is Green Day's second longest song (with the band's longest song being fellow American Idiot song "Homecoming", which runs for 9 minutes and 18 seconds) and the group's longest song to be released as a single. The studio version of this song was considered to be unfriendly for radio, so it was cut down to 6½ minutes for the radio edit. The long version was still played on many album rock and alternative rock radio stations. At most live shows on the first leg of the group's 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, the band would pick a member from the audience to play guitar for the song. The single has sold 205,000 copies as of July 2010.
American Idiot is a concept album that describes the story of a central character named Jesus of Suburbia, an anti-hero created by Billie Joe Armstrong. It is written from the perspective of a lower-middle-class suburban American teen, raised on a diet of "soda pop and Ritalin." Jesus hates his town and those close to him, so he leaves for The City.
"Jesus of Suburbia" was the second multi-part song the group formed. Armstrong said it took "a long time" to write the song. Dirnt said that it came about from natural rehearsing between the trio. This song was an extension of Armstrong's desire to write the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of the future.
As the song changes into different sections, Armstrong’s guitars were recorded differently. The musicians would "split the signal from the guitar and send it into an amp while simultaneously going direct with it," to achieve a sound reminiscent of "Revolution" by the Beatles or the style of David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson. In addition, an overdrive pedal was employed to accentuate gain from the instrument, producing a "punchy" sound to each chord. For the first two sections of the song, Cool emulated Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts, two English drummers from the 1960s. For the final three, he drums in his style: "I'm tipping my hat to all these great drummers that I love, and then I kick the door down and do it … my style."[8] In addition to Watts, Cool pulled inspiration from Keith Moon and Alex Van Halen.[8] The song was composed by Green Day (with Billie Joe Armstrong writing the lyrics), and was co-produced by Rob Cavallo.
"Jesus of Suburbia" has five movements:
I. "Jesus of Suburbia" (0:00 - 1:51)
II. "City of the Damned" (1:51 - 3:42)
III. "I Don't Care" (3:42 - 5:25)
IV. "Dearly Beloved" (5:25 - 6:30)
V. "Tales of Another Broken Home" (6:30 - 9:08)
Since its release, "Jesus of Suburbia" has received universal critical acclaim. People magazine called the song "epic" and a "magnificent nine-minute rock opera." It is often recognized as one of Green Day's greatest songs. It was voted the greatest Green Day song of all time in a Rolling Stone readers poll in September 2012. Magnet considered the song underrated, saying "Some will look at this choice and sniff, “How the hell can you call that underrated?” ... But how in the world can you call it “overrated” when the five-movement, nine-plus-minute song bobs and weaves its way through standard-issue pop punk(“Jesus Of Suburbia”), a piano-laced interlude (“City Of The Damned”), the slobbering, thundering middle section (“I Don’t Care”), acoustic mid-tempo connective tissue (“Dearly Beloved”) and an outsized, anthemic curtain call (the spectacularly good “Tales Of Another Broken Home”), all in service of a tale of bored rebellion as nuanced as Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia and as powerful as any of Paul Westerberg’s snot-nosed teenage character studies?".
Billie Joe stated in an interview:
"[The song] broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be.

This song proves it. Your Beibers and Mileys will come and go, but bands like Green Day are eternal.
It's because Green Day spoke to the broken kids of that Generation.

This album meant so much to those of us trying to grow up in the Bush era, particularly in the years just after 9/11. It really gave voice to all that fear and rage and confusion we had.
It has now been 20 years since 9/11 happened. Taliban has taken over Afghanistan, Biden doesn't even care, this feels very relevant. Green Day is life
