So your about a month older than I am and also a fan of Dad's Army... It IS the BEST self-relating comedy series in existence, ahead of even Monty Python (whom I consider Gods of Comedy).
@@tomatenpaprika6323 Sorry, but no I won't. I'm 64 years of age and have seen Spike Milligan and most - if not all, other of the British Greats. Like "Monty Python," however, "Dad's Army" is in a class of its own and cannot be compared to anyting like it. But as always, you are as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine, it's the differences that makes us Human.
I love the way they draw out national characteristics from Tommy, Jock, Taffy, Paddy, Jerry, Gupta etc...which hold pearls of wisdom and without being racist. Every subject is treated as a fellow human.
In today's woke world many of the remarks and jokes in Dad's Army are considered insensitive and yes, even racist (especially my favourite character Corporal Jones). Go figure. As a well-meaning and inoffensive person, I have been watching "Dad's Army" since their original run in the seventies, and thereafter each and every re-run on Auntie Beeb. I'm also in my second box of DVD's as the first one was showing some wear and tear. Still, in today's longtoe'd world you can't turn around or utter any phrase without offending at least one person. What has the world come to?
Back in the sixties my headmaster at Sheerness Technical School was a Mr. W.E. Barnett. He was a psychopathic child beater. Funnily enough, Mainwaring reminds me of him, and seeing him get his pomposity constantly pricked still gives me a great deal of pleasure.

And the mayor in this episode! See his remark to the town clerk when the netball team are doing their display at around 20.42 and see the clerk's expression.
It is channeling the scene in Olivier's film of Shakespeare's Henry V where at Agincourt the French knight is similarly hoisted cumbersomely onto his horse in full armour, in contrast to Henry, who leaps nimbly onto his horse and puts on some chain mail (note Godfrey's comment to Frazer that it would have been better if Capt. M had let Dolly knit him some chain mail). The scene comes just after the St Crispin's Day speech at around 1.29 of the full movie if you want to check it out. And of course it is also from Henry V that Mainwaring's rallying cry of 'God for Harry, England and St George' comes.
Olivier’s famous film was made during the war (1944) and deliberately in that context used Shakespeare’s play, which focuses on a phase of the 100 Years War between England and France, to present the English as plucky and resourceful, pulling together to triumph over a pompous, overbearing, arrogant foreign enemy who has seemingly overwhelming military superiority. Who do you think you are kidding Mister Valois if you think we’re on the run? In fact, John Laurie (Frazer) played the part of Jamy in the film.
@@jessiejames7492 sorry to disagree but he is stupid & pompous but that's what makes his character so funny. We all know people like him. I will admit that he is brave & doesn't bgive in easily however.
One of my teachers as a kid was exactly like captain mainwaring in looks and mannerisms too.....he was exactly like him except a lot scarier and thinner 😂
What I really hate is when I’m watching a show I haven’t seen in many years, enjoying it, then suddenly I remember the punch line (i.e. the 2 St Georges and Dragons) just before it happens. Oh well, still funny.
Wonderful. I truly wish we had emotional education in school (it's only the most important subject possible); what's funny about this is that the various emotional needs and agendas are as present in many interactions as they are here - only here we get to see it clearly. Typically all emotion is hidden, which makes it all the more likely that equally absurd things happen in our culture without the emotional motivations being seen or consciously worked with.
Are you being served? Different subject matter but equally hilarious, character-driven, lots of cheeky double-entendres and comic physical theatre from John Inman.
It's the British Music Hall and vaudeville entertainer Bud Flanagan (1896-1968). In fact you see his name on the end credits! The theme-song "Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr. Hitler!" was his last recording!
Despite Dads Army being my favourite British comedy of all time, I didn’t enjoy watching this episode - especially as I’ve gotten older. Was Arthur Lowe drunk in this episode? He was not only slurring (more than usual) his words but was incredibly inactive. He did become an alcoholic in the latter years of his life but perhaps started during the final years of Dads Army. John Le Mesurier looked awfully ill in this episode.
@@wildtatz ... and you really don't know how to conduct a conversation, either, do you? You really ought to stop commenting until you have something of interest to say, like Michael Lynn did originally.
Isn't it amazing that after all these years this is still one of the best comedies...ever?
Followed by steptoe and son🤗🤗🤗❤
I am a total Dad's Army nut and I had not seen this episode. This is gold dust.
Myself a German love this series. Only the English have this sens of humor.
British , mate , British , don't forget the Irish , Welsh and Scots....
Such a great casting - the relation between the actors works even decades later!
Priceless Comedy or is that ageless ??! Forty odd years later and I am still in hysterics !!
Both

Yep makes me proud 👍🏻
Ruddy Hooligans, absolute Gold , 2022 and having a laugh

Thanks for this upload Nerilee, its only roughly the 15th time i've seen this episode.......but you made it happen!!!!! I appreciate it.
One of the funniest episodes ever :)
The squeaking of the pulley at 17:10 onwards is the same sound effect as the squeaking of the bicycle wheels in an episode of Open All Hours.

One of the very best TV shows ever. They don't make anything as good as this anymore.
ThePerson1959 totally agree - they don't make them like this anymore!
@Jesus Defender - There's plenty of that in Dad's Army. The difference is, is that it is subtle and played in context of the undertones of the period.
Totally - It's even implied the vicar is gay. Esp. the episode when the French General visits.
And the mayor in this episode! See his remark to the town clerk when the netball team are doing their display at around 20.42 and see the clerk's expression.
Jesus Defender not that Jesus hung out with 12 men or anything...
This had to be one their silliest and most creative episodes. Certainly, their best finale! What fun. Plus, quite an ode to self-importance :-)
