We shouldn't judge. They seem happy. The place isn't filthy as far as we can tell the kdis are healthy and well adjusted. I am not very neat but then I have over 1800 sq feet for one person. I do personally find it too small for six especially as the kids get older. I wonder if a redesign could do something ie. in Vancouver i saw a father design a three layer full size bunk bed with drapes for each child's privacy with storag under the bed of course. The baby could have a crib on top of 4 large drawers for storage. They could have mobile walls housing the parents bed and kitchen? Have the kids on the floor and the parents in the loft? An entire wall can be for storage even if shallow. The private terrace can have a couple of outdoor lockable lockers or boxes for storage. Hooks, pegboard can be used for school bags, sports equipment, outer wear and a sliding door or curtain if they want Ideally 3 kids in one loft; parent sin the other with the baby or the baby underneath. Some seating with storage I would be tempted to different textures of white - glass, flat textured sliding doors, resin, crinkle finishes, sparkly white finishes - a variety and then warm place up with plants and accent color like turquoise or teal or orange. Finding a place for a bin for reach person is important too. Use that vertical space.
Can’t they sell/rent it out and get a nice big house in NJ where the dad works?? What’s huge about owning a home in NYC? Property value means nothing when you are living in the property.
Im really happy that the family is able to be content, but I would go crazy with the clutter and the mess. My house is small, only 1050 sq.ft., but I don’t keep very much in it (even with 3 kids). That last pan around in the kitchen gave me hives. I’m always surprised that people will willingly give up a good quality life for the city. I moved from chicago into the suburbs, and I could never imagine going back to the city.
Some folks just really enjoy tiny living. I remember watching a show which said 100 years ago most Americans lived in small homes with larger multi generational families but now the average is 1-4 people in 2400 sq feet. That's something else. I'm with you though. I would love to see an update.
absolutely no.... this is abuse... a kid sleeping on the floor near the door? are you serious? they're 5 boroughs in nyc ,you can easily rent out that unit and move to a 3 bedroom apartment or house in nj...
That's actually a pretty cool looking place, but not there with that many kids... When those kids get older it's going to be a nightmare especially in your teens.
I'd orginise it wayy differently and also that bed near the door is a safety hazard, if they are somehow able to give the kids privacy when they are older then I'm with them.
akui88 Just think, they could sell that for $1.2 million, purchase a mini mansion, with a pool and acre lot in a subdivision, in the suburbs of central Florida, and still have enough money to send each of their kids to college, fully paid. Depending on the engineer work, the husband can make between $60-120k annually without any state or city income tax.
This is called being cheap. If the husband is the sole provider of the house then he has a good enough income to go a nicer apartment with more space or a house. This reminds me of my childhood slightly. But that’s because my mom was low income and we could not afford to move anywhere. Stuff like this irks the hell outta me lol
Sometimes I feel like ppl try to shame folks by putting stories like this on TV for others to judge. If that is the case, let me tell u what I see in this video. I see a loving happy family with children that are fed, clothed, cared for, and seem very well-rounded. They even have a pet. These folks have EVERYTHING they need and more than most. I'd have been a happy child growing up in this family, just sayin'.
I’m confused… They put the kid on a small mattress by the front door and they sleep on a pull down bed …?? I feel like if this were a minority family, child services would have been called … Period.. Absolutely ridiculous
This is ridiculous... the father has a great job, but let’s say the money isn’t enough. My question is “why live in Manhattan if you can’t afford it?” You can find cheaper rent options, but 86th street is expensive on food. They could live in Brooklyn, pay $1600 for 2 bedroom and buy food from cheaper groceries or live in NJ where the father works and rent is slightly cheaper (talking about Jersey city, close to the city).
Big difference between choosing live a certain way and not having a choice. I grew up in a smaller home with 6 people. We didn't have a choice. That was the culture so it wasn't something we were embarrassed about. I guess over here it is supposed to be a big deal.
I'm confused as to why the son wasnt in a room with a sibling or co sleeping with his parents? I have 5 kids and we once moved to a very large home for a year and in the 4 bedroom all the kids ended up wanting to all bunk together 99% of the time so they could play all night.
They seem happy as hell. It looks kinda fun for the kids...it won’t last when the kids get bigger but I say they keep that for themselves when the kids grow old etc...it is in the smack of awesoness
I’m the 13 y/o mentioned and I’m older now, preparing to apply for colleges and move out. We have since made more loft space and now the place is tidy. Everyone has their own space :)
Terribly expensive to live in New York. I would want more organized shelves! Also if the parents can have a Murphy bed then every child should have a real bed too!
Where in the Bible does it say we need a big house. We are mammals. As long as we have shelter. Food. Warmth and water then anything is adaptable and livable. What you call home might not be the same as others but don’t judge when they have everything humanly needed in that home. Didn’t realize everyone was so greedy anymore until I read these comments
$500,000 for a rec room turned apt!!! Let me sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. They could have a really nice “house” for that amount in NJ. And if he works there why are they still living in NY? Crazy!!
I'm sorry, but this is borderline abuse for those kids. Sell the condo, and move to the suburbs in a LARGER HOUSE! Are two really that stupid to raise your children in such a crammed space? SHAME ON YOU!
I have downstairs neighbors with three kids in an 800 square foot 2 bedroom/1 bath condo. It's loud and annoying all the time. I can't imagine actually living in there like the parents do. Oddly enough, they are Jewish as well. Not sure if it's a cultural thing or they're afraid to splurge on a place that is suitably large enough for a family. I can't imagine how bathroom time works with 5 people sharing one together.
I don’t respect that I would sold that shit and placed my family in a real house. As an engineer you can apply in another state where the family can live like decent human beings. This is stupid living as far as I’m concerned
I'm just not ok with a mattress on the floor in the hallway being a child's bed in modern times... Had this been in Scandinavia the social services would have been involved
I like how she says the ONLY bathroom, like that’s a bad thing. We were a large family like this one and we “sacrificed” with only one bathroom for a while before the two oldest went off to college then to their own places. I think many homes ( especially older ones) have only one bathroom.
If he paid $560K in 2008 according to the story it's worth $1 million or more now especially with the private deck. What doesn't make sense is they say he bought it when he was single and one of the kids is 13 so I guess it's a blended family.
Our family situation is complex. I didn’t live there full time, my sister who was 11 didnt either. The younger kids are our half siblings, and the guy who bought it is my stepdad, who I met when he had owned this apartment for years already.
Bought 10 years ago for about $600k. Will sell for $800-1M today. They are intentionally building equity in that house. And they seem to make it work, so kudos to them. I'd feel too cramped in there personally...
This is really a dumb story. These people have more space than the average job in NYC. The reporter needs to go back to school and then interview real homeless people.
Obviously they love that place. If they're able to save money and build their wealth, awesome. If not, they need to move. So many people spend every penny to live no matter where they live and have nothing left over to save. Lots of Americans instead of being truly frugal are trying to keep up with the Joneses or at least not look bad. Living in the Philippine countryside, I've learned so much from the Filipinos about being frugal that I would never again live in a US major city, especially NYC, unless I was rich. Being truly frugal isn't about getting everything cheaper as much as it is buying (mostly) only necessities, getting 'the very cheapest' price possible, and putting the savings in the bank as well as investing it. To be frugal and not be getting rich as a result of cutting back is not being frugal enough. That's why this studio setup is failing to impress me. It still seems very expensive instead of finding the cheapest possible housing. Nothing was said about the property taxes, HOA fees, etc., so really difficult to know what they're spending to live there. I like that they're using space wisely, but with that level of discipline, they could surely be saving a lot more and building their wealth faster in less expensive housing.
I feel like the reporters want us to feel sorry for them but the father has a great job and they're clearly choosing to live in that ridiculous apartment so I don't.

They own and location is why they probably don’t move. Owning a home is huge in big cities.
Can’t they sell/rent it out and get a nice big house in NJ where the dad works?? What’s huge about owning a home in NYC? Property value means nothing when you are living in the property.
The family needs to get into minimalism! Lol so much..stuff...makes the place smaller and too crowded
that's what i was thinking. or at least tidy up some. it is admittedly very hard to keep a minimal space with kids. they create messes constantly.
a kid sleeping right next to front door is a no no , what if some one breaks in? , a fire ? u all need to get out that exit super fast.
I love the way they flex their space! Very creative. Since they've built a loft bed for the one boy, what's not to love? The kids sure look happy! 😻
That's so horrible. The one kid sleeps on the floor in the hallway right by a door. Time to sell and get at least a 2 bedroom.
I moved from chicago into the suburbs, and I could never imagine going back to the city.
you call that small? LOL in my country 4 kids and 2 parents can fit into smaller than that
They can buy a nice house in NJ if they sell that studio and the dad already works there.
They don’t want to move so 🤷🏻♀️
Legend has it they’ve expanded and kicked the neighbors out.
What they failed to tell you is that the mom is currently pregnant with twins......lol 😆
What?! Was she really??? 😯
Lmboooo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
No privacy I’d hate it.
"Who gets to use the ONNNNLY bathroom? A family of six who chose to live like that.
4 years later, I would like to see an update on them. I wonder if they did the interview to maybe get their own reality show.
Some folks just really enjoy tiny living. I remember watching a show which said 100 years ago most Americans lived in small homes with larger multi generational families but now the average is 1-4 people in 2400 sq feet. That's something else. I'm with you though. I would love to see an update.
I am from the present to tell you we have the Kardashian and teen mom and honey booboo...😭😭😭make it stop😭😭😭
absolutely no.... this is abuse... a kid sleeping on the floor near the door? are you serious? they're 5 boroughs in nyc ,you can easily rent out that unit and move to a 3 bedroom apartment or house in nj...
13 and 11 year old...but father bought the apartment 9 years ago? Get rid of the clutter and let the young man sleep somewhere safer.
They have shelter and each other. Blessed.
Works in NJ, lives in NYC. I hope the school + community is worth it. Because they can get twice (or more) in size if they just move to NJ.
That's actually a pretty cool looking place, but not there with that many kids... When those kids get older it's going to be a nightmare especially in your teens.
Why have kids and put them through this?
You could only live in an apt like that if you're single/just married and are saving for a larger place. They should've moved out 2 kids ago.
I couldn't imagine the amount of noise they make for there bottom neibhor's 😳
I'd orginise it wayy differently and also that bed near the door is a safety hazard, if they are somehow able to give the kids privacy when they are older then I'm with them.
I grew up living in a mobile home smaller than this with 3 other people!! We were an extremely close family!!
I effing bet
Ridiculous. They don't have to live like that.
Hold up the cat sleeps with the baby??? You're not supposed to let cats in the same bed as infants
560,000$ for that ?!?!?!?!?!?
9 years ago. it's probaly 1.2 million today.
akui88 Just think, they could sell that for $1.2 million, purchase a mini mansion, with a pool and acre lot in a subdivision, in the suburbs of central Florida, and still have enough money to send each of their kids to college, fully paid.
Now this is the reality of everyone right now! Make rent affordable again
Hate to say this but if this was a Hispanic or African American couple those kids would have been taken by CPS for sure!!!
Move👏🏽To👏🏽New Jersey👏🏽
We👏don’t👏like👏New Jersey👏
@@lainediep1781 lol fair enough
I’m confused… They put the kid on a small mattress by the front door and they sleep on a pull down bed …?? I feel like if this were a minority family, child services would have been called … Period.. Absolutely ridiculous
Call the fire marshal this place is so fire unsafe.
Many blessings to this family. They are making it work beyond imagination. Very beautiful family.
Any updates on this family. I wonder why they didn't simply rent that apartment and buy/rent another.
This is a really awful choice to make for your children. Move to jersey and give them space they need more than a rooftop.
This is a family with a lot of ingenuity... good for them!
Didn't know people could be so judgemental about other people's situation .
It's that people are being judgmental because of their sheer stubbornness
Lol if you bring cameras into your apartment and put your personal life on the news then expect ppl to judge
@@divineuniversal944 I think people are being unfair though. And passing unfair judgements on them
I think that was the entire point of the piece. Also, with today Covid ravaged real estate market - he bought high.
@@Naturefan354 Doesn't matter if it is fair or not. This is what happens when you let cameras in.
that place is cluttered as hell.. they need to create invisible shelving for all that junk on the floor
What kind of Engineer? Sanitation Engineer?
Wow, I wonder how the neighbors below them feel
I dont know how much eric makes i just think it’s ridiculous he cant find a different home..
$500000 , that is highway robbery.
There needs to be rent controls nationwide for people less fortunate than even these people!
$500,000 for a rec room turned apt!!! Let me sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. They could have a really nice “house” for that amount in NJ. And if he works there why are they still living in NY? Crazy!!
Because he already owns this property and they don't want to live in New Jersey, they want to live in New York! I totally understand it.
I'm sorry, but this is borderline abuse for those kids. Sell the condo, and move to the suburbs in a LARGER HOUSE! Are two really that stupid to raise your children in such a crammed space? SHAME ON YOU!
How come there’s limit to 3 ppl in my apartment and they don’t have limit?
@insight bytes i own it too. Is a condominium.
This is great, compared to the nyc families who are homeless!
I'm surprised they allowed 6 people in a studio.
Still better than most homes in Hong Kong.
If he paid $560K in 2008 according to the story it's worth $1 million or more now especially with the private deck. What doesn't make sense is they say he bought it when he was single and one of the kids is 13 so I guess it's a blended family.
Or they adopted, maybe.
Our family situation is complex. I didn’t live there full time, my sister who was 11 didnt either. The younger kids are our half siblings, and the guy who bought it is my stepdad, who I met when he had owned this apartment for years already.
@@lainediep1781 so blended family then. Good for y'all 🤍🤍
@@lainediep1781 looks like it be a great idea to move away from the crowded urban area
@@steelisthemeal lmao not all of nyc is crowded
Why is this news? Don’t no body care about these people 🙄 they don’t value privacy at all.
Living the best you can with what you have and being grateful.
