  • Losing your first Brazilian Jiujitsu competition is tough. Losing at any 1on1 sport is tough. In a team sport the burden of the loss is spread amongst a large group. Whereas in a singular 1on1 sport like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Boxing, MMA, Wrestling, Judo, etc. The burden of the loss is placed solely on the shoulders of the combatant that failed to win.
The flip side to this is that the glory of the win is giving solely to the lone victor. While they have their team to thank in part of the win. The high feeling of victory is theirs, and theirs alone, to enjoy.
Recently I received a question from a BJJ white Belt who is depressed after his 1st tournament loss. He had been training BJJ for about 8 months. And recently, after 2 months of hard training. He did his first BJJ tournament. Unfortunately his performance didn't meet with his expectations.
After losing his very 1st Brazilian Jiu jitsu competition. Something he had poured almost of a year of effort into. Our friend is wondering on how to overcome this hard BJJ tournament loss and the negative feelings associated with it.
In this video I share some of the tips I use to help harness the negative energy that comes after a loss. As I'll share in the video. That energy can either be an incredibly destructive and overwhelming thing, or it can be amazingly constructive.
Negative emotions are often far more powerful in our minds than positive ones. Pain and frustration are what spur progress in most cases. So using the power of these negative emotions to push our BJJ training to new levels is a great tool.
In addition I share other tips on dissecting the mistakes you make after a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament and lastly whether or not you should compete again sooner than later.
If you're currently down in the dumps about your recent BJJ tournament loss.
I hope this video helps you overcome that loss and helps you get back out there.
    Thanks for watching!

I lost my first today. I'm only 2 months in, and just wanted to experience it. It was definitely an experience. I'm trying to make it a positive one. I was doing alright, and just blanked out. I almost got side control, just moving the steps. Then I pushed forward trying to get double under hooks and we got twisted up and he was able to take my back. I fought to try and get out and he got the choke. It's a good one, I need to build on technique, and my focus. Like I said, I blanked out, and felt like day one. Good advice.

I had my first comp a few months ago. I had been training for 7-8 months at the time and had done very little rolling in the gym. My anxiety was so bad that day that I cried multiple times that morning, and nearly left a few times without getting on the mat. I managed to push through that but when it was my round, I totally froze. I remember slap-bump and then feeling sheer panic and the next thing I knew I was bottom mount and tapped straight away; I don't even know if they had a submission on because I was panicking and thought I was going to have a heart attack. I think the whole thing was over in less than 20 seconds. I thought I was going to quit after that. But I still turned up the next day to class. I want to compete again but I don't know when I'll feel up to it.

Thank you, Chewie! The motivation of a loss is one of the greatest things. I have won a bronze in my first tournament, I didn't do too well despite the results, too stiff, too timid. My second tournament was my biggest loss, I wasn't aggressive enough, got taken down and lost by submission. After that I started working hard, harder than anyone in my gym. Learned to be aggressive and grindy. I had my third tournament last Saturday, I won silver. Beat 4 guys and lost in the final match. This time I was 100% efficient. As you said I was able to translate who I am at the gym mats to competition. Now instead of feeling good or satisfied with my second place, I am pushing myself and feeling the urge to avenge my one loss and train harder.

Dang, reading all the comments hits home man. Just did my first tournament yesterday. First match I spent most of my time trying to get the guy down but nothing was working and I was just getting myself tired trying. Then he got me down and laid on me most the time. It was tough to get out from the bottom. Once he got tired I got up and tried to rest in turtle but he took my back and got the collar choke. Hit hard knowing I lost. Had another match where I was too discouraged from my first and just didn’t care. He pulled me into side control and I flipped him and got on top where I stayed for most of the match but then looked at the score and saw I had no points so I was like what the heck? And he swept me and got a choke. Just felt like I didn’t want to be there anymore. Was supposed to have my match at 1:30 but ended up having to wait until 5:30. My energy was up and down all day.

I recently just lost my first match at an IBJJF tourney, I went on my own as I was the only white belt fighting in my team and it was a Sunday. I went into panic mode, I didn't get subbed and went the distance but i forgot my plan because my brain shut down. However I made a friend out of it, he sent me the video of the fight and i have spent at least 10 hours this week in training and private lessons going over the bits i messed up, and of course my fitness. Looking forward to my next one, make some more friends and advance a little bit further. There is no substitute for having a competitor go at you 100%.

If you are doing BJJ at all, you are winning, because you're doing something very challenging, and worthwhile. Something that fortifies character. If you are competing, you are winning.
If you compete 50 000 times and lose each time, you are still winning, because, you went through the rigours of competition. The training, the stress, the physical exertion. You could have sat on the couch and watched TV, but you didn't, so, you are a huge winner. You exerted yourself, you went hard, endured difficulties, that most people will never know. That's a gigantic win.

If you know you’re going to lose, should that take the stress out?
That how I’ve approached the beginning of my BJJ journey, which I am still in the infancy of my training. Watching UA-cam channels like this and one consensus piece of advice is you’re going to lose a lot in the beginning so just embrace it. It takes a load off of stress. I just have fun win or lose. I’ve yet to compete but I hope to soon and carry a similar mindset. I will say however I am very competitive so I will compete to win but hopefully wise to understand and remember that I am just starting off.

It's okay to lose if you learn from your losses. I find that adjusting and identifying errors along the way doesn't subtract from your practice, but in fact fortifies it. I lost my first tournament quite considerably, but I had also won. It's true that with the correct mindset, you cannot lose even if you lose. Don't let fear be your motivation for winning, chances are you practice this wonderful art because you love it. Just go out there and do jiujitsu.

This is why people need to get their kids into competitions of various sorts at a young age, so they can learn how to lose. Also why they need to stop handing out participation trophies. Everything in life is a sort of competition, and if you can't enjoy the process of participating in and of itself, view it as a learning experience as Chewy said, and use losing as motivation to improve, it will hurt you all through your life. I see people all the time get salty when they essentially lose a competition, they get passed over for a promotion at work, a girl or guy they were chasing ends up picking someone else, they interview for a job and it goes well, but then the company picks someone else. Instead of getting back out there, they like die inside and shrivel up.
Even kids who do compete at things, if they don't get pushed by competition, it's not good enough. A friend of mine told me a story about how he went to a really small school system in a rural area, his graduating class was really small, and he was pretty much top of the class academically all through school. He did little competitions at school like spelling bees, science fairs, etc, and he always won. So he kind of developed a big head since the competition wasn't that strong and he always won. Then sometime in highschool he went to like a regional spelling bee or something like that and got destroyed and was hit in the face with reality. Losing builds humility and prepares you for the real world, and it also makes winning even sweeter.

Very late to the comments but I competed for the first time about 2 weeks ago. Training for a year with plenty of time off because of injuries so probably 7-8 months of consistent training. Lost 3 in a row and won my 4th and final match. The mindset that helped me the most was that each match was it's own match, I wasn't focused on the overall record of the comp. Each match was a new match and I approached it that way. Didn't care that I lost 3 matches at all because it helped me find holes in my game and I've been telling people in class to exploit them so I can be better and they have been and I'm already seeing improvements in those areas. Jiu jitsu is a long journey and your first few tournaments won't matter anyways when you're a higher belt. Plus, even at Worlds and the Pans and all these big tournaments, all of the matches have one winner and one loser. It's all going to be okay

I competed in my first competition this weekend, 1st fight was over before I knew it. I went for a collar drag then an ankle pick. He let me take him down and then put me in a triangle. Had a 2nd bout, dominated for most of the match, was up 15-0 but couldn't get a submission to work from the mount and I misunderstood the ref saying that we had to get something going, wrongly assumed he meant me so I went for the worst armbar ever and ended up getting rear naked choked. Frustrated hence watching this video but I'll be back for the next one. At least rock bottom is the most solid place to build back up from. Hope you kept at it

I have my first tournament next week and I'm afraid of losing and making a fool of myself. i'm so nervous I'm almost too scared to go. It's pretty discouraging.

I am a 47 year old 3 stripe white belt. I did NAGA yesterday and lost my only match 5-2.
There wasn't anyone on my division (because I'm old) so the put me with a 37 year old 4 stripe white belt. He didn't have anyone in his division either.
I am 6'3 and 200 pounds. He was the same. I can tell he is a fitness freak like me.
Couldn't take each other down so I pulled spider guard, right into an armbar. I overcommited and he got the sweep to side control and put his knee on my belly..boom 5 points.
I immediately rolled him over but it was into his guard, I choked the crap out of him with his lapel but i couldn't get out of his guard and he won.
    Congratulations.
My coach was a complete dick to me after me loss.
I had covid for 2 weeks. That was 3 and 4 weeks ago.
I had custody of my kids this week and only was able to train for 2 days.
My coach told me I needed to compete in this tournament on Monday.
The loss is one thing. Whatever
..next time I will be more prepared.
My coach treating me like that after the fight makes me never want to go back to train again.

Dang man I’m sorry to hear your coach was a jerk after. Considering all the obstacles you did good man. I am a white belt and also have 3 stripes. But man I felt like I looked stupid yesterday. Just felt like I looked like I’ve never trained. My coach actually said I did good but I felt really disappointed. Hope you’re still training man! Sounds like you did a great job.

My first couple tournaments I just couldn't get the mentality right or handle my adrenaline dump. But just who I am, i took those L's not as losses but as lessons, learning how to get my mind right and learning from things I did making it harder on myself

First tournament I was maybe 90 days in as a white belt I lost the first match but won the second two but i still didn't medal. Just had another recent tournament over a year later as a 3 stripe white belt, I know doesn't mean much but just trying to explain I'm not a new white belt, so i thought I would be a sure to win my division. I lost in the first match didn't even get a second match, that one hurt just bad. It sucks, but i still love the competitions. I'll keep competing until I win damn it.

I just had my first competition yesterday. I am a white belt with three strips. But man, felt like I looked like I just started an hour before competition. Embarrassed and disappointed. But I want to get better man. I want to go all the way and earn my black belt someday. But I definitely feel sucky right now after loosing.
