I have both speakers and have been using them from around last 4 years and hands down the yamaha sounds better .The alto seems a it louder and have a bit more low end sound in this comparison because wrong settings. In the Altos 12 o'clock is the max volume and the contour switch is on, And in the Dbr the volume is at 12 o'clock that's half the maximum volume in the Dbr and the D contour switch is off, I mean the Dbr is half volume and D contour switch off And the Alto max volume and D contour on that's not fair comparison Don't get me wrong i like the Alto a lot, in my humble opinion they are better than beringer, mackie,Eon, and I'm 50/50 with the EV ZLX You can't beat the Alto's overall for the price
Being using Yamaha's for three year's now not looking back, great for what I do, compare to most brands at full volume before I bought them all I can say it's like driving a sports car instead of a family sedan specially around curves, am driving a pair of Dxr 12's on top of two Dxs 15's, just like in music quality vs quantity, it hurts to spend that extra money but the versatility alone, used them in tiny little places an huge ballroom events, inside, outside, live and haven't used them at full volume yet, most important set your levels right!! But hey, that's another story.
Clarity clarity and clarity, Yamaha excels in this category. I have a pair of DXR10 and DXS15 sub, it's the best sounding speakers, it even smokes QSC in this category. DBR10 is almost same but with lower power output. With 7 years warranty, you can't go wrong with this.
Both sounded good, the Yamaha was within a hair of the Alto in bass output and the midbass was cleaner, the bass notes were more distinct. The alto wasn't bad though, I like that it was warmer and smoother on the top end.
Thanks for the review was looking at getting a set of 10`s for various uses kids parties, monitors, speech etc etc i was leaning on the Yamaha worried about build quality after seeing this didnt fancy the alto as spl to low ended up with set of the new db opera 128spl 600w rms nice sound.
I believe that was purchased in 1972 by my wife's father. It still works 48 years later! I have a new Yamaha one there now, and looking to sell the Pioneer if you are interested.
For a middle-range quality, I've always been a fan of Yamaha - (comparing to Alto, Behringer, Peavey, Mackie, etc...) - which I find more precise and clear. So I have a pair of DBR 12 coupled with one 12'' subwoofer, we're a pop/rock live duo (v-drum + backtracks + electric guitar + vocals), all plugged into a mixer and the result is excellent : power and sound quality with high définition. We just would like to reduce size and weight of all this - which takes, including all our gear, 2 full cars when we have a gig - by replacing the 12 inches speakers by 10'' ones : since we have a sub-bass speaker and play essentuel in bars and small places, most of times we would just need 10'' and maybe 8'' would be enough. The Txr 310 are way cheaper than dbr, but when I read most of the comments, Altos seem to be better for "pre-recorded" music , typically for DJs , than for sounding good for a live band. Am I making a mistake ? Thanks for your help, everybody !
Thanks for putting this up, Im looking at the Yamaha's for Christmas. It did seems as thiough the Altos had some extra "umph" to them, maybe they've opened up a bit from more time in use. The Yamaha's may have come across as a bit more refined, not as peaky iin certain area's although the extra peakiness in the Altos made them sound a tad more "alive" for lack of words. Either one would suit my coming acoustic trio/solo gig coming up but this was cool to hear. Thanks for the efforts in putting this out.
wow the ts110a seemed much fuller and warmer. I didn't expect that. of course I am listening to it second hand via my computers sound quality which is also rich and full of low end. Thanks for sharing.
Have to admit, the Yamaha does sound more ‘in the room’ and uncoloured. Perfect for clean, live, unamplified musical instruments. Excellent for human voice and traditional jazz. The ALTO sounded more suited to music with electronic sources and pop music. Horses for courses.
Tweeter on altos seem to blow out a lot. Yamaha are more expensive, but you get 7 yrs warranty. For the price alto is great. For long time reliability go for Yamaha. Yamaha is legendary. Great video 👍.
The Alto sounded clearer and stronger on hi and lo, but maybe more brash. The Yamaha sounded more closed, maybe tighter, maybe more balanced. I can see how the Alto might suit pop music, particularly vocals. I'm interested in speakers that can reproduce a stage piano, because many speakers sound like marshmallows feel when you put a piano through them. They can't handle the percussiveness. Pianos need a full range speaker, but with a tightness, particularly in the mid range. Maybe a stage version of a studio monitor would be best. In my studio, my old MSP5s still give a mid-range integrity to my digital pianos that few stage speakers can offer. I think a pair of these Yamaha speakers tested here would come close to what I want in a mid-size venue.
The Yamaha has a 1" cd which makes it somewhat incompatible with the cheap 10" woofers that typically tend to break up at 1khz. If they were using bespoke woofers, these dbr10's would fetch 2x the price. Dunno how the Alto managed to do that with their crossover but it is also at the same frequency with the Yamaha the only difference it uses a 1.4" cd could be that they are using a steeper slope. Yamaha rarely does that in their budget lines even in their home audio.
@@automachinehead This is really embarassing. I don't know what cd refers to in this context. I'm an audio user, not an audio expert, but I'd like to know a bit more.
yeah alto are a cheaper speaker , but so are all the components in them. the yamaha are the budget end series, but come with QUALITY components and a 5 year warranty. i know they both sound similar but if you wanted to upgrade in 3-5 years time maybe ,i think you would get a better return on those yamaha's.
Wow, the Alto's mids are very weak compared to it's lows and highs. Maybe a crossover issue. Not a fan of the rated spl either. I also like that Yamaha's are warrantied for 7 years versus 1-2 years for Alto's. Bottom line, in a 10" speaker, you're looking for tight bass not exaggerated bass. Yamaha was the clear winner.
I have My Yamaha DXR 15 have been using them from around last 1.5 years those are awesome.. There was a need for monitors for bigger events and smaller speakers that sounded as great as the DXR 15 for small events so the combination for both of my needs made me think of buying the Yamaha DBR 10 Your Shootout video and Review on yamaha made me think less and go with the Yamaha. Will Be purchasing soon the Yamaha DBR10.
the alto was best just over all I own one the ts 112. I also have a peavey dm115 vey very good for all lower end. don't need a sub for anything under 80ft away. then paired with the ts112 alto. any hoo great demo bro thank you.
I owned a pair of Alto TX8 and another pair of Alto TX15. Let me tell you, just like other would say, the TX series could be flat sounding. But with right EQing using a mixer, the TX series, are warm yet has this silky smooth highs. I always look for articulation on the sound. Overall, sound wise the TX series, it sounds great to me. The price is lower than other branded speakers. I would highly recommend it. Just work on the gain structure and minimal EQ and you get an "in your face" sounding speakers. With the volume crank at 12 o'clock, my ears hurt after 1-2 hours of music and my chest could feel it due to the SPL of my TX8.
Alto brighter sounding. Yamaha smoother. Alto i'd cut some highs and mids a little not too much. Yamaha i'd crank it up a little. both sound good though
@@waimeaguyz9074 it's why Alto is better a high shelving filter is more than enough while the Yamaha needs to have the treble cranked and sacrifice the rest
You can never accurately have a speaker comparison on UA-cam, not only due to the different speaker settings, the fact that what you're hearing through your computer speakers is what was captured by the camera's microphone (and it's inherent limitations), the need to properly match the SPL wise, the fact that each has different voicing/processing that can be eq'd to suit the users' taste etc. One thing I can tell you is that the Alto is much more likely to be in a landfill before the Yamaha's 7 year warranty runs out :) Altos may sound good when they work, but they ARE cheap, disposable speakers. 1 year warranty is laughable, as is customer support. Pay more and get a reliable long lasting and well backed company that is know for producing top notch equipement...
nice review Richard! I own one alto ts110A and use it to play music. my question is about the way I am doing my connection(s) bc I am running L/R rca out from mixer to 2 xlr on the speaker, thinking that 1&2 inputs were actually L/R. am i doing something wrong here? thank you. JR
thanks for the review. I'm thinking about the TX8's so I'm hoping they're the same quality as the 10's. And actually what I intend the TX8's for (acoustic guitar) they sounded better (to my ears) than the TX10's. But good review regardless. The TX10 sounded a bit clearer than the Yamaha though.
steven vaughan This is not the TX series. This is the TS series. It was a TS110. They don't sell them in stores anymore as they came out with the TS210s now. The TX series is a lower end model with less power. The TX series is fine if you are doing small bars, and smaller events though.
hi I'm thinking of getting a pair of 10 inch for karaoke for my house.Im leaning towards the Alto because of its price plus they sound really good too . what do you think? thank you very much...
Buy the TS210s! They will sound great! Very strong on vocals. If you are only using it for karaoke in your house, 1 speaker will be plenty. Of course, buy two if you are gigging with them.
The alto seems a it louder and have a bit more low end sound but the Yamaha is brighter , it's more neutral, I have heard the Yamaha live and you can hear every individual instrument like it's not mix together, so if you want loud and clear sound the Yamaha is good to go and with a nice Sub then you'll have a live band playing next to your ears lol
Yamaha DBR10 has very short throw. Anything more than 15 feet... you wont be able to hear it much. Dont waste your time blasting it...cos it will sound really harsh
How did you normalise the "volume setting" since Alto is active and Yamaha is passive? SO you need to use an extra amp to drive the Yamaha with it's own characteristics. The grid indicator aside the volume slider says nothing about the real power that is coming ou of the 2 different amps, nor the sound characteristics even without any contouring or equalising.
I think your right ....The DBR10 Has a brighter sound, almost to bright when listening for the base The ALT has a little better base , But sounds a bit muddy . You can't beat the Alto's overall for price . I'm a Yamaha guy , but that DBR10 could use more base and the extra expense of a sub woofer would not be something i would want to do . The Yamaha DXR12 is back on the radar ......Thank you ! UA-cam ...jimyoung1944
i have the Alto TS212, and rhe Alto TS215. The 2 series does sound brighter, and overall better than the older 1 series. However, they are not way better. They are also the lightest speakers on the market! 28.5 lbs on the 212, and 33.4 on the 215. The TS210 only weighs like 21 lbs...that is awesome
Love the way your son is jamming in the background. Very cool.
lol yeah
I would consider myself a "Yamaha guy" and I think the Alto beat the Yamaha, hands down. Thanks for posting this comparo.
Don't try the alto it is a such pain to replace the high driver every 6 or 7 gigs and honestly yamaha beat them in flatness and the sound range
Thanks, Richard.
