If you find a copy of "Forgotten Railways of the East Midlands," you will read that much of the Sheffield to Nottingham section was untraceable as early as 1974. (The line only closed on 5 September, 1966.) N.B. There is a nasty chap around using the name Steamlocoscrapper who thinks that anyone who supports the GC main line is a foamer, whatever that is. (It is bound to be derogatory.) He has not even heard of some of the places served by the GC. The big mistake was to hand the line over to the London Midland Region from the
Eastern, under the British Railways "one city, one region" rule. All intermediate stations between Sheffield and Nottingham were closed on 4 March, 1963; the only scheduled passenger train over this section was then the daily Bournemouth to York train, and the reverse working. Three weeks later came Beeching. It looks as if much of the heavy industry in the area has gone. Even in 1963, there was an endless procession of freight trains. The main advantage of the GC main line was a direct link from Sheffield to Banbury, using the Woodford Halse to Banbury link, which was the only direct north to south route from which you could reach practically anywhere, without the need to go through London.

It's great to see recent history and no better than from above, inotive use of Google Earth to highlight. The GCR is yet another lost national asset. Thanks for the series so far.

The Chesterfield loop also closed on 4 March, 1963. Apparently, most of the local trains between Nottingham and Sheffield taking this route waited for ages in Chesterfield Central Station, even as long as an hour. This shows how incompetent rail managers were in the latter years of the GC.

Thank you for this, I have cycled much of this route and where the Springwood Tunnel is, I never realised. Really appreciate your work.

It's like running through the landscape as a giant - for which I thank you.

Great video would take hours scrolling with the mouse to reproduce something like that! Looks like a lot of the old line is now walking paths, except near the end where farmers fields have taken over.

I can't get my head around at the thought of destroying such a fantastic line that was the GCR...must be one of the worst,if not criminal acts of our once railway heritage?
