Hey music junkies and vinyl junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest 60s songs of all time for the music community and vinyl community with music history video essay's. If you’ve ever owned records, cassettes and CD’s at different times in you life or still do this is your place Subscribe below right now to be a part of our daily celebration of the rock era with exclusive stories from straight from the artists and click on our patreon link in the description to see our brand new show there.
Here at Professor of Rock we want to extend our condolences to her family and recognize her incredible contribution to music history. Her legacy will continue to inspire people for centuries to come.Veronica Bennett grew up in the Spanish Harlem neighborhood of New York City. She formed the Ronettes in 1961 with her older sister Estelle and cousin Nedra. Teaming up with Wall of Sound producer Phil Spector, they released a number of hit singles in the 60s including Baby I Love You, Do I Love You, and Walking in the Rain.
But of course, the biggest hit of them all was Be My Baby... which climbed all the way up to #2 in the US.
The Ronettes broke up in 1967 and Ronnie and Phil married in 1968. But after enduring years of psychological abuse, Ronnie divorced Phil in 1974. Later, in 1982 she married the love of her life, Jonathan Greenfield. Just a few of the many highlights of Ronnie’s career included touring with the the Rolling Stones, singing backup for Jimi Hendrix, befriending an up-and-coming Cher, and inspiring rock luminaries like Brian Wilson, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and so many others to write music patterned after her style. In 1986, Ronnie's solo career reached its zenith when she collaborated with Eddie Money for top 5 smash Take Me Home Tonight.
To give Ronnie a proper tribute we absolutely have to take a closer look at her signature song Be My Baby. We were planning on covering this on our #1 in our hearts program, because it deserved to be a #1 hit on influence alone and it got as close as a song can. Be my Baby was the first in a group of songs that songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich penned with Phil Spector. Lyrically, it is very simple. It’s about a girl who is trying to convince a guy she likes to give her a chance. She lets him know that she's been into him from the day they met and that she thinks they can pass the test of time.
Looking back on the song, Ronnie said that it felt like they took the lyrics straight from her life. It was during a time when she was still very young and innocent. She remembered Phil coming to her house and seeing the dolls in her room. He asked her about them.

On my living room wall is an autographed 8×10 picture of Ronnie Spector that reads "To George, Baby, I Love You, Ronnie Spector." This was from the late 80s when she was doing a Christmas show with Sonny Bono and Darlene Love at the Bottom Line in Greenwich Village where I worked at the time. The show lasted a week so I got to talk to the artists a few times. Ronnie was an absolute class act on and off stage. Sonny was one of the coolest guys you could ever meet too. I was sorry to hear that Ronnie recently died. Sonny too also went far too soon.

I was 10 in 1965 and had an aunt who was only 4 years older. She had a baby blue, suitcase style record player and I would sneak into her room and listen to all her 45’s. My favorites were always the girl groups of that era. The Shirelles’ I Meet Him On A Sunday; The Chiffons’ Sweet Talking Guy; Martha and The Vandellas’ Jimmy Mack; The Supremes’ Stop In The Name Of Love; Millie Small’s My Boy Lollipop; Leslie Gore’s Judy’s Turn To Cry; and, of course, The Ronettes’ Be My Baby. I knew every word to all their hits and would stand on the street corner with my little sister and best friend and do their synchronized dance moves as we belted out the songs. Many years later, at the Palladium in NYC, the DJ suddenly switched up the 80’s dance tunes he was playing and put on Be My Baby. I’m positive that my date fell in love with me out on that dance floor as we sang every other line to each other. Ronnie, thank you for the music. Professor, thx for the memories. Peace

Professor, I had recently heard the sad news that Ronnie Spector died of cancer. I am so glad you devoted an episode for a tribute to her. When I think of the music scene during the early 1960s, one of the very first genres that comes to mind is the girl-group sound. The Ronettes and The Crystals were regarded as the 2 best. If I had to pick the most classic song from the girl groups, it would be The Ronettes Be My Baby. That song was influential to so many, including Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.

Discovered your channel this week, and have been 'binge-ing' ever since, thank you for your content.
It's been uplifting, and what I've needed, especially during this very difficult week.
Like you, I had a father that was a bit of an audiophile, and was taught that the records, tapes, and stereo equipment were to be respected.
My father exposed me to 'older' (40's, 50's & early 60's) music, my older brother showed me the music from the late 60's to early 80's, mostly 'straight rock', (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Boston, Stones, Eagles, Aerosmith ...), while Casey Kasem's Top 40, and 70's AM radio filled in the gaps.
In high school I discovered Bob Marley, Tom Petty, ZZ Top, The Police, Devo, Pat Benetar, and the Go Go's.
Your channel has helped me re-discover many of them and even add a few new ones ... again, thank you.
I especially love the way you try to teach the younger viewers about "THE STRUGGLE" we had 'back in the day' finding and acquiring 'our' music.
Maybe you already have, and I just have not found it yet, but would love to see you do an episode about "Columbia House", and other ways that we used to endure to get our music, countless hours flipping through the stacks at the local record store, having a tape recorder on standby, next to the radio, hoping the DJ didn't talk too much during the intro and extro, the disappointment of a tape getting 'eaten' by the deck, or discovering one of your vinyl records had been 'scratched', buying an album because of one song, just to discover that it was only good song on it.
Thank you again, and keep the music playing.

I've never commented on your channel before even though I watch you everyday. But this one brought up so many memories I had to. Like most of us, I had a crush on Ronnie since the first time I laid eyes on her. I knew every one of those Ronettes songs by heart. I was also a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, and I had that 45 of say goodbye to Hollywood which I played so much the grooves wore away. I will never forget the thrill I had seeing the E Street Band and Ronnie on that cover sleeve. It's still on my Asbury Park playlist to this day, actually heard this morning while I was in the gym! Eddie money's first album was one of the first 10 LPS I had ever purchased with my own money.( was a freshman in high school) I vividly remember that song dominating the airwaves. Here in New York City the big rock station wnew-fm 102.7 was having a New Year's Eve concert that Eddie Money was headlining. I had tickets, and on the way, I remember asking my wife, " I wonder if Ronnie Spector is going to show up to sing that part of the song? " and you know what, she did! And of course it was awesome. R. I. P. Ronnie Spector, the queen of our hearts forever

What can be said about this song that isn't obvious?
The quintessential love song of all time. I'd place it in the top spot of my factories songs of the era, because it's the absolute epitome of what a song should be. I hadn't ever even really heard of Ronnie Spector, but now that I think of it, realizing all of the songs that she sang, she's always around!
She's like rice, or the color red. You might not have it all the time, you might not even LIKE it, but you'd hate it if it wasn't around, and you'd know that something was wrong if it ever went missing.
Thanks for putting a name and a face to such a strong voice!

Didn't realise you had met Brian Wilson!!! They don't get any bigger. To think Be my Baby was the song that influenced him so. Same for Amy Winehouse, I saw a later performance of Ronnie around '74 it was like Amy copied the whole thing - but she was a great enough songwriter to back it up, that Ronnie then covered Amy & Brain completed it all x

***QUEEN RONNIE GOES "...HOME..."*** : ....Ronnie Spector has left us, but hasn't left, without leaving a LEGACY; ...Phil's production on a simple little Pop ditty turned into a EPIC profusion of undying Love, for a generation of Youths.... The ORIGINAL "Bad Girl", Ronnie's exotic looks attached itself with the sound, adding another dimension of strengths that made the tune an undying CLASSIC...(CONT.)
...NOW, Thanks to the "Baby Boomer" generation, "Moonlighting" and Eddie, Ronnie re-ignited her popularity in the 80's, and has since toured constantly, and has been revered, SINCE...
....She will ALWAYS "Be Our Baby".....you can go 'Home', now, Miss Ronnie....RIP.... Thanks, for the tribute on her, Prof., I KNEW you would do it RIGHT.....

I cried when she passed. I hate cancer so much, it takes too much from too many people I love.
Be my baby is such a classic and perfect song. Wall of sound and the Ronettes were so beautiful when singing together. Phil was a fool to try and cage her. Most of my friends hadn’t heard of Ronnie when she did that cameo. I knew because I listened to KERTH 101 the oldies station when it meant DoWhop and Frank and Tony Bennett. So Gen X got their introduction to her and fell in love with her. She will always be a voice that will never be matched.

I recently discovered her version of You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory. It's so raw and emotional and I get a sense of what she 'd been through in her personal life. Loved her cover of Say Goodbye to Hollywood. and Don't Worry Baby.. I remember when I first heard Born to Run, I knew immediately what that sound was and where it came from.

I really like a lot of Eddie Money's stuff, but in my opinion Ronnie made that song. My guess is that Eddie would agree.
Same with the video. When she comes out dancing in silhouette I get a little chill, and she transformed a kind of average video into something I had to watch. Because I wanted to watch and hear her.
The Ronettes will always be on my playlist.
Rest in peace, Ronnie. Eddie too.

This got me shook! I have been hearing Take Me Home Tonight for 35 years and never knew exactly what Eddie was saying right before the “Be My Little Baby”. And I certainly never put together that it was referencing the 60’s Be My Baby, and I of course didn’t recognize that it was her featured on the song. I feel one part idiot for not knowing that and 2 parts satisfied that yesterday those two ancient songs have a new meaning to me. Oh, and F Phil Spector.
