Interesting video, can't say I'm down with the darkside, however Ryan Fortnine did a video about it and it was surprising he didn't totally bash the concept. He went through and discussed the physics of turning. Really looking forward to the 650 getting cruise control. Other than that the bmw's reliability rate isn't great compared to the v Strom, will definitely look at the 650 a little more closely.
I'm totally down with the Darkside ! Just did my Burgman 400 and it's a 90% Pro / 10% Con equation, imho. If you're a 2-3,000 annual mile / 1 longish trip per month biker, skip going Darkside. You'll get probably 2 seasons per rear tire. HOWEVER, if you commute & love to ride daily like logging 8-12,000 miles + annually, you'll benefit hugely going Darkside. I just got a V-Strom 650, 2008 in immaculate condition. The PO installed new Pirelli Gran Turismos, and when that rear wears out, Darkside it will be...
Have the same bike....i ride everytime, have no car. i never want to have this kind of bike. but, after 81.000 km i must say: AWESOME. And over the whole distance no problem. really nothing. Only services. My next will be the same one.
It's a little different but you quickly acclimate. For me the biggest difference is not have to change tires as often. When I do DT tires I only by expensive HP tires..
Glad the car tire is working out for you. I had thought about going darkside but needed a more off road style tire. Putting a proper plug in the tire would be very easy/ inexpensive and could save you a lot of headaches down the road. Crashbars, skid plate, metal panniers and more aggressive tires really helped make mine meet my needs. A side-effect was that it looks a little better too.
Dark Siding is becoming more and more popular with long distance riders. Cost is a factor, but so is load capacity, and time and convenience having to change tires mid trip.
JUST DONT DO IT ITS NOT SAFE JESUS JUST LOOK AT TYRE DEVELOPMENT AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR SAFETY AND YOU ARE THINKING OF DOING IT JESUS GIVE ME HOPE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY SPEN MILLIONS ON GETTING IT RIGHT FOR BIKES AND YOU WANT TO PUT A 50 DOLLAR CAR TYRE ON WHAT ?????????????????
That rear tyre.....i suppose if you ride a bike like you would drive a car it might make sense for cheapness but cornering and general bend swinging is what makes a bike more fun than any tin box, this nonsense just takes that away completely. You are a bike rider that values cost over everything, including the feel of riding a bike properly it seems. Weird.
What is proper to you isn't the way others like to ride. And a darkside tire is more expensive than a motorcycle tire, the benefit is it lasts much longer. Im happy with it, and does fine even when im riding the tail of the dragon.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you have never ridden with a car tire. I use to think the same way until someone let me ride their bike with a CT. While I would not use it on a super sport they seem to work well on most other types of bikes. I know, I know, it seems strange but if you get the chance to try it, it might just change your mind.
Hedge Hog, have you ridden with a car tire on a bike? By your comments I'm guessing no. Would I want a car tire on a Hayabusa, not likely, but on most bikes; especially long distance and heavily loaded I think they are great. Many of us ride 10,000 plus on trips, not having to change tires mid-trip is a big plus.
From someone who has owned both, no. Although I've not owned the GS for long enough to question reliability. The vstrom was reliable. But perhaps the GS is too iv only owned it for a month
Any problems with the GS yet? Driveshaft spline failure? Transmission failure? Clutch worn out? Electrical issues? Fuel pump? Just curious. The oilheads are easy to do the basic maintenance, even throttle body synch and valve adjustment, but man are they monsters to tear down and fix. That's why I'm looking at V-Stroms.
@@cesartapia610 it's a year on and nope. Running as good as the day I bought it. And I ride her hard. Also a lot less prone to corrosion. The vstrom started rotting after a year.
Vehicle Hunter I just bought it one thousand miles ago. Previous owner put 70,000 miles on it commuting in la and had just bought a new triumph tiger. I know where you can get your bike with 45k miles on it for $750 but it’s in Georgia near Atlanta.
kenny taylor yep it’s gone. Guess that dealer needed to liquidate a bike fast it was listed by a reputable dealer on eBay. I would’ve gotten it too but it was too far and I didn’t feel like paying to ship it
Closed the video as soon as I saw the car tyre. How dumb is that.. the shape of that tyre is not made to curve, not to mention the weight and traction that will consume much more gas.
I CANT GET OVER THIS SOME YOUNG DUDE IS GOING TO COPY THIS STUPID STUPID IDEA AND FUCKING KILL HIMSLEF !!!!!! Car tire ??? With a nail
???? You’re a legend.
DL650 absolutely better than BMW have travelled around OZ 2up and outback tracks without an issue still own it and running like new.
The strom has inner beauty.
Only have 2 tires . Probably a good idea to pull that nail out and see if it’s a leaker??
The car tyre is a brilliant idea, it works, and so mad max. love it

Amazing engines. It's a good kept secret you never hear about in magazines of the dl650 anymore.
I have a 06 Love it.
How does it feel leaning with a car tire on? It looks like it would be hard to initiate the lean then have a super fast turn in.
