    I am almost 70 and Just about every car or bike I have ever owned has been under powered by US standards but they all worked fine to get me where I wanted to go. My first motorcycle was a 1970 Honda 175 SL I rode it on two trips in Montana over 250 miles one way. The first trip was from Missoula to just out side of Bozeman on I 90 and the second was from Missoula on Highway 93 to Glacier Park and back. So I am saying this to encourage new comers to the sport to ride what you have or you can afford. I have 3 bikes now and love all of them for different reasons. I have a Honda 2008 crf230l and a Honda 2012 nc700x and a Suzuki 2008 drz400s. I love listening to you guys on Low Side High Side.

    57:00 this displacement question typically trickles down to the distances we have the potential to travel compared to the less interconnected countries elsewhere. IMO the vehicle you’re using is where the fun comes from. I’ve had more fun in an 1986 manual Ford Ranger with compression issues than any other vehicle I’ve driven. I’ve had more fun on my 2016 Cbr500r than I legally could on a 600 or liter bike. Just like the long distance riding conversation earlier in the podcast it’s about enjoying the ride, not just getting from A to B as fast as possible. And let’s be honest, how many of us aren’t just riding around aimlessly anyway?

    I just had to come show some support for Spurgeon. There’s only 3 reasons for a turbo on a bike. Fuel efficiency, power, or novelty.
    Bikes are already fuel efficient enough as it is. If you’re stressing about getting more mpg to save money you should re-examine your finances. If you want more range maybe you’re in the wrong bike with too small of a tank.
    Power....it’s unnecessary. Bikes are more capable than 90% of people can push them. Plus with a turbo you have to be much more cognizant of where you are in the RPM range because you don’t want boost to hit at the wrong time coming out of a corner for example.
    So that just leaves novelty. And I don’t see the point in adding weight and complication just for novelty.
    Turbos on dedicated drag busas are the only time a turbo on a bike makes any sense to me.

      Emissions is another thing to consider, easier to make power and meet new euro 5 emissions laws, there’s a few leaked forced induction designs from Yamaha, Suzuki and I can’t remember the 3rd but from what I read they all seem to be geared towards making good power and passing emissions tests

    The first question, and Spurgeon's mention of KTM being relatively unseen in the street, is exactly why I bought my, new at the time, 2019 KTM 390 DUKE as my first bike (at age 36). In the Canadian province which I live no one rides KTM and I had, and still haven't, seen another KTM on the roads. It was because the appeal of the 390 Duke as a fun, little naked and the scarcity of KTMs on the road that I bought the bike; even though dealer required maintenance is no less than 450 km away. It's definitely afforded me many conversations with people wondering what I'm riding and how I like it, which is nice as a new(er) rider.

    Auto braking on a motorcycle would be nothing but dangerous. I own two cars that have full driver assist, and these systems don't always work properly. it's one thing to have a car apply its brakes, and a different issue to have a bike do so. Riding is far more balance related than driving. I'll add that now and again my cars brakes are auto applied for no reason (that I can determine), can you imagine your bike clamping the brakes when you're not expecting it, you're likely to go over the bars. traction control, abs, quick shift, etc... all good adds if you want them, but let us apply the brakes ourselves. IMO

    To follow with the question about the uniqueness of a motorcycle... One big-ish group of people that exists among car enthusiasts are the "sleeper fanboys", cars that don't look. super fast but actually are. Example the Chevy SS (a malibu with a Corvette engine) or a Buick Regal GS (a regular Buick with 260hp) ... What are your favorite sleeper bikes?! I kinda feel there aren't that many because super sportbikes and naked bikes tend to be designed a bit out there, so I can't really think of any sleeper motorcycles

    Hey now, I commented in agreeance with Spurgeon on the video about the turbo.
    Needless complexity, heat sink management, another part to fail, additional weight/cost. There is a reason that many of the most tracked sports cars (miata, brz/gt86) are preferred naturally aspirated.
    Fuel costs would have to absolutely skyrocket before I see factory turbocharging becoming viable, and honestly, a hybrid electric motorcycle seems far more simple and appealing.
    A 60hp brushless motor in the hub would absolutely stomp. Battery weight would be kept minimal as hybrid power is only needed for acceleration. It requires surprisingly little power to sustain speed.

      Totally agree with that. If brought downmarket to other bikes it should be selectable like ABS on KTM models. Something like that could make emergency maneuvers impossible. Turns a simple evasion into becoming a hood ornament or trunk dressing

However, the difference between riding my KLR650 solo vs. having my wife onboard is night and day. It's valid reasoning however a lot of that tech is nothing you will need or use on even the most spirited street riding.
      Especially if you're a newer riding still working on your skills and confidence.
      A good newer bike with ABS, TSC and other 'standard' electronic suite is, I would say, all you need.
      The more important thing is picking on what you learn, yes you can just go and get a crazy liter bike - but - something in the Yama/Kawa/Honda range around 500/750cc with solid ABS/TSC etc. Is all you need.
      The way I see it those extra electronic suites only come in hand when you ride the latest 200hp machine on the edge.
      I started on a CBR500R, ABS kicked in a couple of times and helped, TSC as well in colder or slippier conditions but as I rode on it basically never kicked in anymore.
      So as a suggestion you could try something somewhat friendlier, less expensive, and more approachable to build your confidence on.

    • @Damiv
      @Damiv 3 роки тому

      @@Valks-22 See I kind of see it from the other direction. I'm looking to have all that tech, even if I don't need it, and then gradually lower the intervention settings over time as I get more confident in the bike. Maybe part of this is that my current bike has no electronics at all and I've lost the back tire a few times when the streets are even slightly damp. Haven't wrecked it yet but they were some close calls. Upgrading to something with an absolute minimum of ABS is my goal for this year. The price range I am looking at the RS660 fits at the top end of, and it's got pretty much everything I could ever want in a bike. Cruise control for under $12k! I think the only other bike that offers cruise control in that price range is the Rebel 1100, and eww cruisers.

    • @Valks-22
      @Valks-22 3 роки тому

      @@Damiv I can't speak for cruise control as I don't have it on mine (CBR 650R) and don't have much need for it anyway.
      But if you are looking at sports/nakeds alternatives easier on the budget I can wholeheartedly recommend the CBR650R or CBR650 (same but naked) friend has.
      Kawa 650 is a contender as well. They have 90% of electronics you need bar CC and are great middleweight choices.
      That being said if you're sold on the RS660 due to looks/performance or something go ahead - I personally don't see a need to spring up to it just for the extra electronics.

    • @Damiv
      @Damiv 3 роки тому

      @@Valks-22 I looked at the CBR650, but insurance for that bike would cost me $100 more a month than the RS660. So I'd actually save money by getting the Aprilla lol. The Ninja 650 would barely be a step up from my current GS500. My commute to work is an hour of mostly highway so CC while not required would be really nice to have. Not much interested in naked bikes, I need that wind protection for all the highway miles I do. It's kinda a hyperspecific set of wants/needs I've got and there just isn't a lot of bikes that fit into that category on the low end of the price range. Seems no one makes middleweight sport touring bikes anymore.

    • @Valks-22
      @Valks-22 3 роки тому +1

      @@Damiv Must be country-specific, for me the RS660 would be the more expensive option in terms of insurance, tax, and maintenance beyond the higher bike price. So for you it makes more sense.
      As for wind protection, I agree a 2 hour highway round-trip on a naked does not sound fun for a daily commute. I put a 3cm higher than stock PUIG bubble on my CBR650R and it takes just about everything off in a semi-tuck position at 90mph on a highway and does so effortlessly at ~40 mpg.
      In any case you won't go wrong with either bike!

    Making a belt drive shed mud or dirt is a solved problem. Gates has been selling bicycle belt drives for years that shed mud just fine: the key is to make the bottom of the sprocket grooves open so lobes of the belt can push the debris down and out through the open spaces.
    The problem isn't that belt drives can't handle dirt, the problem is that Yamaha specced the SCR950 with a solid sprocket (along with many, many other mistakes they made when parts-binning that bike together).
    That said, a modern x-ring chain is essentially permanently lubricated from the factory. The only reason you need to clean and "lube" them is to keep the outer surface of the chain from looking rusty.

    I agree with Spurg about the turbos. Unnecessary. Fuel infection will efficiently manage fuel/air mixture to accommodate elevation changes. And 99.9% of riders are incapable of using the performance capabilities of most bikes currently produced.
    I didn't read any other comments on the matter. Just my perspective.
    Great show guys.

    I would like to hear some discussion on the fueling in new bikes. I have had quite a few bikes in my life. I have been riding on road for 28 years and on dirt for 36 years. In the last 2 years I have purchased 2 brand new bikes. They are both the worst running bikes I have ever had. They have both had a throttle that turned on and off like a light switch. I ride in an extreme range of temperatures and both new bikes will have times that they hesitate, bog and even let a big pop out of the intake. Nothing is found to be wrong with them. Am I the only one that has had these negative experiences? Or is everyone ok with paying 15 grand for a new bike that runs good sometimes? Is going to turbo the solution? Automotive industry is going to turbo to create good power out of small engines and meet emissions.

  • @jongun78
    @jongun78 3 роки тому

    most motorcycle engines just don't produce the volume of exhaust gases necessary to spool a turbo fast enough to make a impactful difference or they only do it at the upper reaches of their rev range.

    AND ANOTHER THING: Go small. Smaller even. Nope, even smaller. ... smaller, ... not there yet.. smaller still. GO WITH 125ccm or less. And take your time. You'll have a blast. Small bike, small weight, small pack, small budget, small consumption. Go small, go cheap, go now.

      @Ninety Four Moto depends on what kind of riding you want to do. Take your time, reduce your desires for more miles, add some joy for exploring, and you'll have fun. A buddy of mine toured over ALL of Europe on his MZ 125 naked with a budget that small it was ridiculous.

    I agree. The technology is amazing and I am glad it is available, but I really enjoy my Stone Age KLR to just go out and have fun. However, on the street in heavy traffic and wide ranging weather conditions, I like the ABS on my BMW. I definitely believe technology improves safety, but I also believe it results in less skillful riders.

    The reason there is no turbos on motorcycles, is because the bosses are like Spurge "We tried it in the 80s, and it didn't work"
    They won't throw money after something they think is already proven to not work!

    Zack, I listen/watch in a place where I can't turn up the volume very high and there's varying amounts of background noise. As I've learned when dealing with a "masked" world, I rely more on seeing a person's speaking then I would have suspected. So if you could just lower your mic a smidge, it'd help a lot. Thanks!

    Worst trip I ever took on a bike, 1998 riding from SC to ATLANTA, about a 4 hr. Trip took 13 hrs. Lmao it rained and I mean rained torrentially, the whole way, and it was December visiting family for christmas. On a cbr 900rr and a big pack strapped to the back. Me and a buddy froze for 13 hrs. It was memorable though .

    I think the overwhelming response against Spurg regarding turbos was because he was so passionately against it and any possibility that turbos would ever be viable in motorcycles. I think if he went with a more nuanced argument it would be easier to agree with his viewpoint lol. But it was more entertaining this way :D

    The sad thing about Harley's "off road is our heritage" bs is I honestly think it really wasn't for us. It was for the board members who are still skeptical of innovation. They needed to remind those people why they said yes, even in the launch video.

    Regarding the new rider with a leg disability, why was there no suggestion of a maxi-scooter? Could he have used a BMW C650, a Burgman, C400, or XMAX ? You already suggested the DCT transmission and a thumb break so that he wouldn’t need to worry about using his feet to shift gears or have to apply the rear brake.

    Stupid question.. how do you leave an Apple iTunes review? lol This is the only podcast I listen to, I have tried 3 or 4 others and none held my interest. I figured this at the very least warranted a review on iTunes, but I couldnt figure out how to leave a review. Thanks Apple for making me feel stupid. While not all episodes appeal to me, I have been enjoying them, the banter between Zack and Spurg. I really enjoyed the dream trips ep, and my top pick I think would be the same as Spurg.

    I definitely blame the necessity of a motor vehicle for the increased sizes of motorcycles and cars in the US. Most of our towns and cities grew after cars were invented. In many cases, this leads to many more sprawling suburban areas in the US instead of actual metropolitan cities. Take this, mixed with large rural swathes, connected by highways, and usually poor or entirely absent public transportation, all of which make cars mandatory. In europe, a family might own a car, but it will be used far less. Therefore, a european's car might be seen as more of a tool, rather than a defining part of your everyday life.
