@@akatheheretic3014 judges 19 to 21. It was a Levites concubine, the Benjaminites wanted to have sex with him, but instead he gave her to them. She was raped to death, then cut up into pieces and bits of her were sent to the other tribes. End of the story, the Benjaminites were allowed to take 600 women for themselves. If I remember the story right, it’s never praised or said that God approved of doing this. The same goes with the guy who said I’ll sacrifice the first thing I see to God, and it ended up being his daughter. The text does not say that God approved (or didn’t approve) of this, it’s just told as a story.

This is honestly so sweet. My exit was lonely, I enjoyed hearing what it would've been like to have a best friend who was also going through waking up. Even though you didn't end up together, it must have been nice to have the silent support from your partner to keep you going to finish your last service year, the visiting a bar on your break from cart witnessing sounds iconic. I had an online acquaintance who was an ex-JW that eventually committed suicide because of their shunning policy. I brought up that fact when an elderly woman and her young granddaughter rang the bell. The woman was so proud as she listened to her granddaughter given her spiel, but when I mentioned the suicide the woman had zero sympathy at all. In fact, she claimed that if they didn't shun there would be even more suicides. This really angered me and I gave her a piece of my mind.

I am almost afraid to say that I have always had questions about the bible and it was not just the interpretation of the organization but what the bible said about many things. This is something that is much larger than the Jehovah's Witness Organization. It has been difficult but I have started to research information on the gospels and who wrote them and I have found some very interesting information about the differences in how and why people wrote during that time and a lot of other stuff that I can't begin to get into. At this point in my life I don't believe in much of anything. I still pray to God and thank him for everything and try to be a good person in general.

I’m a convert to Catholicism (ex Protestant) and one thing I love about my tradition is that a wide range of interpretations are allowed for Biblical texts, and things such as the slaughter of the Canaanites can be interpreted as being perhaps loosely based on history but actually serving didactic and apologetic purposes for the communities that wrote and preserved them. My understanding is that, for example, the evidence suggests Jericho didn’t have walls at the time the exodus was supposed to have taken place, thus the takedown of that city couldn’t have happened as a literal historical event exactly as described. Key to understanding the Bible is genre awareness. And yes, we do believe the Bible is inspired by God, but it’s also not a self interpreting text and must be read in light of the ancient Tradition of the Church, since the Church is the custodian of Scripture. Furthermore, what the Scripture writers most ardently agree as being literal history (namely, the Death and Resurrection of Christ, and His basic teachings) is thus the hinge on which all Scriptural interpretation should turn. Particularly brutal passages in the OT are troublesome, but most generally they aren’t proscriptive into perpetuity, and we also must wrestle with the fact that God worked within ancient cultures that had some bad practices (such as slavery, concubinage, etc). Sometimes structures of sin were tolerated for a time only to be abolished later (eg Jesus’s forbidding of divorce after Moses had allowed it). What you have in the NT is a certain historical core of events that even liberal scholars will admit probably happened (such as the Crucifixion, the Empty Tomb, and the Disciples’ subjective experience of Jesus’ life continuing in a resurrected form after His death. I believe the best explanation of those facts is that Jesus rose from the Dead. The rest of the Bible should be interpreted in the light of the sure revelation we have in the life and teachings of Christ.
This is my take-I won’t be returning to defend it in depth so I would advise anyone against a long-winded takedown. If you don’t agree you don’t agree. Just wanted to point out that it’s possible to take the Bible seriously as revelation wi th out thinking it all must be literal history. There are a variety of genres in the Bible, including probably some fable, myth, etc. it doesn’t mean that ipso facto everything in it is fake-that’s an overly simplistic way of reading the texts.

Hi Wally, I'm a new subscriber and I really enjoy your content and ZZ! I've been binge listening to your content as I drive and as long haul trucker you've helped me stay awake many a mile! Lol! I remember when I was waking up I had my grandparents theocratic library going all the way back to russle as my great grandmother was a " culporter" back at the turn of the last century. Reading their own material woke me up as I was at that time terrified of reading anything apostate. Their own literature is condemning of them. The final straw was a Thursday night meeting when a letter was read from the society saying they would give us a new construction loan at 3 or 4%. I immediately turned to Luke where jesus stated DONT loan to your brothers with interest. That was the straw that broke the camel's back! The elder opened it up to questions from the congregation and I asked why we were being charged interest when THE BIBLE says DONT charge your brother interest? You could have heard a pin drop! Of course I was hauled into the library as soon as we said " amen" by 3 elders. Interesting fun fact, the new 2013 bible REMOVED the word " interest" and relegated it to a footnote where as the old 1984 bible has it in the verse itself. Once again they change the bible. Thanks again for your work and effort into making these videos and I'm glad you popped up on my feed. Cheers! Zach

Hello. As a former born in JW I applaud you for opening your mind and realizing WT doesn’t speak the truth of any kind and they certainly are not an authority on biblical theology or history.
I HIGHLY recommend two books for you. One is ‘Is God a moral monster’ by Paul Copan and The Unseen Realm by Dr. Michael Heiser who is an ancient near east scholar and Semitic languages expert. Both of these books helped open my eyes about so many false beliefs that many orgs, groups, individuals or churches have on the biblical narrative and interpretation.
Dr. Heiser is my favorite scholar and really down to earth. He’s not a wealthy evangelist looking for a following to use for his gain like the WT. his goal is to take high peer reviewed information and pass it on to the lay person who’s not working toward a PhD in Hebrew or biblical studies. Scholars view the Bible every differently from pastors, deacons, etc and what I have learned has blown my mind. It’s really awesome stuff.
Understanding an ancient book/books require understanding the worldview of those who wrote it and the audience they were writing it to. The Unseen Realm was a real eye opener and has assisted me in speaking to JW’s as well as Muslims(which I have a deep personal understanding of) about the proper context of this ancient book we call the Bible.
I hope you’ll check out these books and especially The Unseen Realm. It’s 100% PEER REVIEWED so everything in it is backs up by other scholars.

melleetheka and JW Thoughts To those who plan to, or have read Paul Copan’s book ‘Is God a Moral Monster’, I would definitely recommend also reading ‘Is God a Moral Compromiser?’ by Thom Stark! Stark considers himself a Christian, but his book is a weighty reaction to Copan’s apologetic defences of the biblical atrocities, and where he takes Copan’s arguments and scriptural interpretations, deals with them and analyse them one by one.
So if you find ‘comfort’ in Copan’s book, then read Stark, and you be the judge!

@@crashingkite already have. I wasn’t blown away by his arguments. Check out The Unseen Realm by Dr. Michael Heiser. Now THAT is a fascinating book.
And a side note about atrocities in biblical history. I think we can look into the world today and see horrible atrocities happening on the basis of personal feelings and “right to choose” so unless you can condemn the systematic murder of unborn humans you shouldn’t point your finger at the killing of anyone and call it evil.

Hi Wally, I stumbled upon your channel recently and have been going through your backlog. I'm ex-JW but got out in the mid-90s around age 14 thanks to my parents' divorce (and mom's subsequent DF)
I haven't finished this video yet, but the bible story from Judges that you retell around 2:45 is one of my foundational memories from my childhood. I was reading through the entire bible from a very young age, because my dad would have me copy bible verses to keep me awake during meetings. The most gruesome bible passages became my favorite and most memorable, and I would question why God's people would treat women like this and why I had to wear a skirt to the kingdom hall, why good women got treated worse than bad men and related it back to behavior I saw in real life, etc. And he would call me a witch or wicked at age 5/6. 🙃
Despite my very precocious feminism and skepticism, I still believed in these teachings literally for awhile, and was a good little witness eager for baptism, until the treatment of my mom after df started waking me up when I was 10.

In the second account, he makes Adam first, then he makes all the animals and lets Adam name them. But since Adam can't find a proper "mate" among the animals (I found that super curious!), he takes Adam's rib and makes Eve. I went back and forth between the two stories, and they just don't jibe. What do PIMO, POMI PIMI and POMO mean?
The terms PIMO, POMI, PIMI, and POMO, are abbreviations commonly used within certain communities to describe different states of mind and belief. Here's a breakdown of their meanings:
PIMO: Physically In and Mentally Out. This term is often used by individuals who are physically present within a particular group or organization (such as a religious or ideological group) but mentally have disassociated themselves or no longer believe in the teachings or principles of that group. It can be associated with a state of "waking up" to the inconsistencies or flaws within the group's beliefs.
POMO: Physically Out and Mentally Out. This term refers to individuals who have both physically left the group or organization and mentally disassociated themselves from its beliefs and practices. It signifies a state of freedom, liberty, and happiness from the constraints or control of the group.
PIMI: Physically In and Mentally In. This term is used to describe individuals who are both physically and mentally committed to a particular group or organization. They adhere to its beliefs, practices, and principles, often without questioning or critically evaluating them. It can be associated with a sense of being "enslaved" to the group's ideology or dogma.
POMI: Physically Out but Mentally In. This term refers to individuals who have physically left the group or organization but still hold on to its beliefs or mindset. They may have left due to various reasons but haven't fully let go of the group's teachings or ideology. It can be associated with a state of fanatical adherence or being mentally trapped in the group's influence.
These terms are primarily used within the context of religious or ideological communities and represent different stages of belief and disengagement. They serve as a way for individuals to express and identify their current mindset and relationship with a specific group or organization.
    #PIMO = Physically In and Mentally Out = Wake-up
#POMO = Physically Out and Mentally Out = Freedom / Liberty / Happiness
#PIMI = Physically In and Mentally In = Slavery / Zombification
#POMI = Physically Out but Mentally In= Fanaticism / Slavery
To get your freedom you must change from PIMO to POMO if you do not want to be a POMI.

I think the reason for the writer going overboard on the dark side is found at the beginning of judges 19 and the end of 21. If you’re reading the original Hebrew of Esther, it barely mentions a Deity so it’s tough to infer at least from the Hebrew version that ipso facto God must approve of this. It’s a story set in a certain time period and thus of course moral sensibilities changing with time will reveal the more messed up aspects. Just like in a post Me-too world, many of us cannot watch the scene from the Sandlot in which the bespectacled kid forces a French kiss on the female lifeguard. Yes, these are kids, but still-it’s really not funny and we shouldn’t have found it funny in the 90s if we had been morally reasoning in a consistent way.

@@Linda-ux8un Good question Linda. On the surface, it may seem like a harsh statement to make, but according to a definition from Oxford Languages, it states: /do͞omd/: adjective - likely to have an unfortunate and inescapable outcome; ill-fated. "the moving story of their doomed love affair"
Therefore, if Wally continues in his destructive course by proactively attempting to invalidate the authenticity of God's word as found in the sacred scriptures of the Bible thereby sowing seeds of doubt in the hearts innocent ones, who are searching for, and earnestly yearning to learn the truth, he will have an "unfortunate outcome", especially when Almighty God Jehovah destroys suchlike ones at Armaggedon. (Isaiah 9:17; Revelation 21:8; Proverbs 11:9) So yes, as I stated before, "he's doomed."
The word-name Satan was appropriate to use as Jesus did when addressing Peter, since the word is derived from Hebrew; a verb meaning primarily "to obstruct, oppose". (Matthew 16:23)
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satan#:~:text=The%20original%20Hebrew%20term%20%C5%9B%C4%81%E1%B9%AD%C4%81n,%22to%20obstruct%2C%20oppose%22.
Jesus even warned those who stumble little ones (innocent, or inexperienced children) when he said, "But whoever stumbles one of these little ones who have faith in me, it would be better for him to have hung around his neck a millstone that is turned by a donkey and to be sunk in the open sea." (Matthew 18:6)
So no Linda, there was no connotation of judgement, or condemnation intended in my comment. Only God can judge and condemn to death. (Ecclesiastes 3:17) But even if I were to condemned his words, or denounce his efforts; which I do, it still wouldn't be wrong of me to do so. I am on God's side. Jehovah will have no mercy on apostates and evildoers when He executes righteous judgement and makes His enemies vanish like smoke. (Psalms 37:9, 10, 20; Isaiah 9:17)
      www.jw.org/finder?srcid=jwlshare&wtlocale=E&lank=pub-jwb_202009_11_VIDEO
Liinda, please protect yourself from liars and deceivers. I wish you peace, and pray that one day Jehovah God will bless you with the truth found in His word the Bible. (John 4:24; 17:17) Take care.

An even more ghoulish thing is if a male child (as long as they can read & stand at the podium on a stool) on the TMS has this part in the reading, the elders won't pass this on to an adult male, the child will read it. I remember sitting like 😳 while a small boy read a very sexually charged passage. Like you couldn't call up someone older?

Wow looks like that was hard at times for you to recall your story. All of my family are out except my parents. I was the last to leave of 7 children. We were all born in.. My parents are treating me differently then the rest of of my siblings even though they have been out for 2 decades, but they faded and l disassociated so in their minds they think its different but it's all the same to me. I'm surprised you were able to just fade out being a pioneer. Seems like they would have been hounding you down like the FBI once they didn't see you at the hall. I disassociated because l was used too much in the congregation and just fading wouldn't have been enough for me. I wanted to cut all ties. How were you able to just fade? Is your family treating you like you disassociated yourself?

It's the first time I'm seeing this and I haven't read the blog.
I have questions: From what I understand, for you the Noah timeline didn't make sense; for other people was feasibility of building an ark and putting all the animals in there; for others the feeding and cleaning... Dudes, I can solve everything with miracles and god intervention. All problems are now solved related to that subject.
Why would anyone lose their faith because of it?
Now, my real question is: if you have a god that killed and ordered the killing of hundreds of thousands, including infants, why would timelines bother you? There's more than enough there to realize that there's something terrible wrong.

Just thought I would comment on your insight @ around 3:45 as your basis for discounting the bible and becoming an atheist. I am not writing to justify some of the evils that are recorded in the bible, but really, are you expecting all Sunshine, Rainbows and Unicorns in the bible? That was an ugly story, but think of some of the things that go on today, as far as human trafficking and abuse of Women as second class citizens. Again I am not writing to justify the actions of the Levite in the story, But it was a male dominated world then, much as it is in most of the world today, only with great strides and progress in the modern western world today. But then (biblical time thousands of years ago) the man would have been totally humiliated and demeaned in the male society of his time, lose his position as he was a Levite, so to sacrifice the women as it were, (to them at the time was not a big deal) "gasp" I know that sounds terrible in todays modern culture, but that's the way is was. So this should not discount the veracity of the bible.

Those stories so demeaning to women and the condoning and promotion of slavery that demeans us all, should be enough to ban the bible as hate literature. My waking up was triggered by god's use of stoning and seeing a filmic representation of this that was so sickening, I wanted nothing more to do with a god who commanded this as a punishment. I just read the story of Noahs flood, and yeah, it's a little contradictory timeline wise. It started on the second month and seventeenth day, and rained for forty days (with springs opening up from the grounds).
The ark was afloat for a further 150 days before landing on Ararat .... AFTER 40 days and nights of rain!
It continues by asserting that on the seventh month and seventeenth day it was on Ararat.!?
Really! I never read it properly before!
Now bear this in mind. Rome standardized the calender with about 30 days per month as late as 1582!
    YES 15 mother fuckin 82!
Before that Rome hadn't made it's mind up and nobody actually KNEW how long a month was because it was inconsistent.
Now, how many days in a month were there in Noahs day?

@@exjehovahswitness I don't want to take a side on this from a translatatory point of view either, because the scrolls weren't discovered all in one immaculate batch AND in English.
Often when new scraps are discovered extensive work is done to patch things together so that things make sense.
When christians were being persecuted and their scrolls burned, some were able preserve parts of their collections.
Time however wasn't so forthcoming. When discovered many of them crumbled, and it has taken centuries to restore from sources all around the Mediterrainian.

Study History along with Hebrew and Greek . You will start to see that English is terrible at conveying what the Bible actually means. The word love has multiple different meanings in greek. The books apart of Bible cannon where even written in different literary styles . It is almost impossible to fully understand the Bible in the viewpoint of modern civilization without constant study and research.
