Yes, I am now a retired LR mechanic and so grateful they never managed to sort out reliability. 😎
This was EXACTLY my vehicle until I wrecked it when someone ran a red light. Drove well over 60k miles and driven to both ends of the country. The only actual issue I had was the power steering wheel controls went out and had to be replaced. If you take care of your Range Rover it will last. I have a 2009 Rang Rover Sport (non supercharged) and it's been extremely reliable (160k miles). Only work I've had to do is replace the air suspension with Arnott air bags which was only $600 and took me 2 hours to do all four corners, all four brake rotors and pads which took about 10 minutes per side after taking the wheels off, and the front hood latch which was $18 and took 5 minutes since the alarm kept going off. Otherwise the car has been great, no check engine lights or other weird electrical gremlins. I guess sometimes you just get lucky with Range Rovers and sometimes they're money pits. I've also learned that dealers and independent mechanics wayyyy overcharge for work on these, most stuff is extremely simple and they charge for hours of labor on jobs that take no time at all. The air suspension was only 4 easily accessible nuts on each air bag and took less than 30 minutes to get them out and put a new one in. Local shop wanted $1600 to do the job that only took me 2 hours having never done it before.
Is it the 4.2L? Those were significantly more reliable than the 5.0 that Hoovie has. The 2010-2011 5.0L had similar timing chain issues as the old 4.0Ls from 97-02. Still this motor is considered quite reliable even compared against other car brands. The drivetrain is one of the most reliable parts on this LR as long as those timing chain tensioners don't go out.

I used to work with these in the UK, getting them onto ships to be exported worldwide. I can't say I enjoyed the sport model specifically, the headroom wasn't all that and I am over six foot, but they were extremely comfortable and fast. Not bad at all for 90% off of new prices
Several years ago one of my closest friends bought a “certified” Range Rover from a Dealership. To this day it was the nicest riding, most comfortable SUV I’ve ever been in. It was beautiful. We took it on a long test drive including a little light off roading (basically an unpaved road). I came away impressed and completely understood the Range Rover mystique after. Unfortunately that trip was only one of three he made in it before it ended up in a series of shops and was eventually deemed “unrepairable”.
i had a 2012 one of these for 3 years, when it was running right, it was a fantastic vehicle........but.......the cost of repairs and especially parts was beyond eye opening. i would strongly suggest that anyone interested in one of these have the extra cash to pay for the expected service/repair bills that will accompany this guy.
Thing is, you can only deal with major failures so much and eventually get tired of its maintenance. You’ll be off spending more in repairs a year than the cars value lol. I would strongly recommend someone interested in these to not get it unless you’re getting a brand new one.
I’ve owned both and really you must do your research and buy the right models of BMW and LR for reliability. That said I have found LRs best products to be much better than BMWs best
@@rahimi4762 speaking specifically about reliability I have had far fewer problems with my LR products than what are considered the most reliable BMW models. Both have fairly good build quality but not Honda levels of reliability.
I had a 2013 RRS Autobiography..... and still miss it. Was one of my favorite cars I have ever owned. Power is incredible and quality of interior was excellent. I was a lucky - zero issues in 50K miles.. Only one problem with air suspension (under warranty). Pound for pound - hard to beat.

Hi Tyler, here are some surprises 😊 This Sport is actually based on the LR3. Chassis, suspension, etc are all the same. You will also find that this Sport is actually heavier than your newer, bigger, Range Rover. This one has a steel ladder chassis with a monocoque on top, while your other RR is a single aluminum monocoque. I think about 300kg difference. Clunking in suspension are 99% always the front lower or rear top suspension arms, the rubber bushings at chassis side are fluid filled and will leak out the fluid and start clunking. You can replace the bushings alone, but labor to get them in and out is more expensive than replacing the entire arm. Oh, and to keep your suspension compressor happy, replace the air dryer before it cloggs up. 99% of compressor failures are due to air dryer blocking air from getting into the compressor. Good luck! 😊
If I remember correctly, Clarkson’s is not a sport because he HAS to have the drop down tailgate. Pretty sure at some point he said that is what makes a Range Rover a Range Rover.
The reason why the first gen Range Rover Sport was not considered a real Range Rover was because this first gen was built using the discovery 3 chassis. This is what Jeremy Clarkson mentions.
For that suspension error I had that same error on the 2013 RRS. I replaced the compressor. Issue was still there. I found out it was the middle air suspension reservoir valve block.
Same colour and trim as my FIL’s RRS, his is 2012 Diesel which has a minor facelift including different gear selector and tailgate. I rebuilt the air suspension compressor and refurbished the air dryer with a kit for about £80. That sorted the suspension issues he was having. Valve blocks can be an issue if the air dryer granules have turned to powder and got past the filters.
I think he's going back to what he did in the past where he brought Hoopties because he has recently experienced a decline in the number of subscribers and views...
i own one right now (2012). it’s at 110k mi… literally the most reliable car i’ve owned so far. i’ve owned 2 MB GLs. a 2010 GL350 (i know don’t judge me i sold it luckily) a nightmare, a 2013 GL450… wasn’t THAT bad actually, but i had to replace the entire suspension, and now i currently own a 2013 GL550 and i knew what i was getting myself into because of the 450 being the same exact chassis. since owning the RR sport all i had to replace was lower control arms and normal maintenance. that’s it. i am waiting on the timing chain issue, but other than that, SOLID. no other suspension issues what’s so ever. i was even shocked (no pun intended) 😵💫
The reality is that most people can’t afford it new, and they can’t afford the maintenance for a used rover. In terms of value proposition- there is no other car that has the luxury features, on road performance and off road capabilities- all in one car. So those people talk crap.
@@richardrace237 the Germans are on par or even better in tech and although they can also be unreliable, they’re nowhere near as bad as rovers and are more likely to be trouble free, at least until the warranty period. Many people can afford a used rovers maintenance initially but go broke with how damn frequently its components fail, they’re notoriously known as the most unreliable globally for a reason and you’re better off with a German competitor new or used than this. In fact I was even interested in one a while ago with a 3 year old Range Rover and while it drove ok, it was already squatting near the front and needed new air suspension. Great cars when new, sell it as soon as it’s out of warranty or better off leasing.
It's always nice when you buy a used vehicle and find out it's not going to bleed you dry right out of the gate. Luckily because I was a trained mechanic I can spot issues 99% of the time and so far never got into something I regretted also being able to do your own work is a plus though.
My dad bought a 2011 RR Sport SC for 7k… the original owner was quoted 20k for fixing the timing chain. Luckily my dad is a master mechanic. He worked on it for like 3 weeks straight little by little on his extra time after work… he only spend 1k to fix it and man let me tell you. That truck is a dream to drive!!! And it’s fast AF… now I’m trying to convince him to sell it to me 😂
how many miles did it have on it at purchase? I see one 2010 with 170k miles, no indication of timing chain service on the car fax but i's only 8k usd?
Recently learned the air suspension available on this is top notch, possibly unmatched among luxury off roaders of the era. Monotube shocks, adaptive damping, ability to raise and lower for ground clearance. Actually probably an underrated off-roader platform.
In the UK, these always rank in the top 5 most unreliable cars, according to magazine surveys. So the more options the better as they take their turn to stop working. Good luck!

I love mine! You really have to drive one to appreciate it. No timing chain issues yet and i am pushing 121k. Must be willing to do your own maintenance to save you a ton.
Anyone saying this is the most unreliable Range Rover (Sport) has never been around a P38 RR. Shorten the oil change interval on the AJ133 and it's a fantastic engine. I've had 3 LR4's and an L322 all with the AJ133, biggest issue was a coolant hose failure that cost $315 to fix at a shop. I won't ever give up Rovers for my daily drivers, for the little air suspension issues they're absolutely worth it. And that air suspension fault just needs a rebuild of the compressor if it's a Hitatchi which it should be in that year. $60 for the kit and it's all sorted!
I bought a used 2010 in 2016 and owned for 4 years with no major issues. Overall, loved the interior, power, features and comfort. A few minor issues. Starter ($500 part), Transmission Linkage ($45), and a plastic cooling system part ($50). It did like to eat batteries every 2 years like my 2004 disco did as well. Used a Garmin Speak Plus which paired great with the LR entertainment system for streaming music with hands free controls.
I want a supercut of Hoovie ducking down behind all the vehicles over the last year or so, to prepare for jumping out and saying "Welcome to Hoovie's Garage"
I understand the sentiment but this one time case as shown in this video proves otherwise so that must mean to only buy Range Rovers at GM dealers. Better yet, I'm going to look for an Aston at the local Mitsubishi Dealer!
The L320 series was actually a big step forward in reliability from prior Land Rovers and Range Rovers as its underpinnings were entirely Discovery/LR3/LR4, meaning not the most unreliable Range Rover ever, but hey, the title gets views I totally get it. Most of the issues they have are as common as a Honda Accord or any other normal car like sensors or AC compressors, unless of course you count the air suspension and to be fair, every vehicle in this category with air suspension is going to have issues with time and use.
I know of plenty of people who've had relatively trouble free motoring with Range Rovers. It seems that when you get a good one, they are good, but when you get a bad one....oooooffff! they are NAUGHTEH!
Just picked up a 2011 Range Rover HSE LUX full size with 125k miles for $5000 (needs an alternator) and might pick up a 2011 Full size Autobiography with less miles for $2500 (jumped timing). They really are great cars for the money and if you get a good one or go ahead and do the coolant crossover pipes and water pump, the timing chains, and the control arms, they really can be reliable daily drivers. That said, there's plenty of these on facebook marketplace with blown engines from owners who never maintained them. There's a lot of people who did shorter oil change intervals than land rover's insane 15k mile intervals with higher mileage that have never had to do timing chains. $8500 is still a great price for an autobiography sport.
I had a 2011 supercharged sport back in the Day, bought it new and drove it to 90k miles before I traded it for a f10 m5. It was actually a very reliable, quick and great all around suv. The only thing I had to do is replace an airbag for 500$ at about 70k miles, and an evap code was fixed by the dealer early on in my ownership- other than that it was problem free.
That's because unlike everyone else who always comments on Range Rover videos, you're not a child and you've actually owned one, and you could afford it. So the complete opposite of almost everyone else who comments on every video featuring a Range Rover.
My homie has a RR supercharged with about 60k miles. He’s never had a problem with it. He also has a 2012 X5M with 115k miles and just had its transmission replaced. Lol
I still have my 2010 TDV8 Sport, had it for a number of years now. So far Its needed an alternator and those lower suspension arms plus roll (sway) bar bushes front and rear. Nothing else other than routine servicing and wear and tear items (tyres, brakepads and discs). 75k miles now.
Hoovie I've had my 2011 RRS Supercharged for years. I have had to spend some money on it keeping it going, but at the end of the day there is no other vehicle like it and I don't want to get rid of it!
The bad error as you call it is usually connected to the air suspension steering angle sensor. Pull over, key on steering wheel straight, full turn left to right. I usually do it with a scanner, but sometimes that'll reset the SAS as a quick fix.
I just took in a 2011 RRS SDV6 as part of a deal and honestly I’m in love with the car. Smooth, solid, and it seems that most issues on these cars come from owners who can’t afford proper maintenance on a depreciated high en vehicle. I’ll be following this one closely Hoov!
I have the same car, same model, I love it. The timing chains were already done with the updated kit. The front end knock is something you might have to get used to. I also replaced both front lower control arms, but it is actually the nature of the hydrolic active rollbar that is a bit noisy. It is called hydrolic nock, same as you can get in your house water system 😁 If the control arm, sway bar bushes and drop links are OK, then the hydrolic nock is surely the issue. Good luck and enjoy.
i just send em too the scrapper, not worth it, they really arent, unless you are towing- but the guys who tow with them generally couldnt give a fk anbout the code list you find in every single one of em... not even range rover specialists like range rovers unless they are sadistic thieves. toyotas exist, anyone buying , looking at buying "repairing" or promoting land rovers is going to a special corner of the hot place.
Actually his has the 3.6L TDV8. I looked up the plate while watching Clarkson's Farm. Edit: apparently it's been mechanically totalled. Doesn't mean I'm wrong. The Range Rover used in the show is registered in the UK and you can look up any UK plate and find the engine displacement and type, among other things.

What I always wonder about Hoovie, is how does he do so many miles on so many cars, does he spend his day just driving around or what? He is racking up 10's of thousands of miles a year on multiple vehicles from the sounds of it .
I'm on my 3rd Rover Sport. My first was a 2010 just like this. It had 98,000 miles on it. I didn't buy a warranty. I owned it for 3 years. During my ownership my only major issue was a dead battery in the 3rd year. I traded it for a 2014 V6 Rover Sport with 109,000 miles. No issues. I traded that for my current V8 Rover Sport. It had 98,000 miles when I got it. I'm just past 2 years owning it. I've onky had to replace the front cobtrol arms and all tge brakes. That's it. I love Rovers.
Same. I bought a 2012 Autobiography and it was a love-hate relationship. Never got rid of it though because it was honestly too much fun. I later got a 2019 Evoque Dynamic and recently traded that in as the down payment on a 2022 Sport SVR. They’re just too nice.
Wow! I just bought a 2012 Range Rover Sport HSE Luxury and after replacing the front air ride suspension, a/c fan clutch and electrical clutch it’s damn near perfect. I love how it handles. I also have a 2020 Discovery but the old Range Rover is a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing your fortunate accidental buy with us. Best wishes.
His constant mention of the crazy market makes me start to believe that selling the cars was a Car Trek challenge for who could sell their old cars for the most over sticker price or something like that.
We bought the LR4 with the 5.0. The guides make noise at idle but we've put 30k on it with trips to damn near Canada and damn near Miami, twice. These things are very reliable.
You should sell vehicles more often. Buying a reliable vehicle afterwards, who would have though it possible? As for unreliable Range Rovers, watch the UK Top Gear special filmed in Bolivia.
I have a 2010 Range Rover L322 supercharged, 100% worth the hassle. It is great seeing peoples' reaction to a full fat Range Rover on the offroad trails.
That's a pretty good price for the 2010 supercharged. That engine is somewhat better than previous ones. That one has always been on my list, but I do enjoy my 2004 Discovery 2 as well :).
I bought a 2010 full size autobiography 6 months ago. Was listed at a great price by a private seller a town over. Bought it with 89,000 miles now its coming up on 100k already. Its been surprisingly been great! I have the full service history and the only repair its really needed was a water pump at 60k. I am selling it however because I don't want to dump money into it if problems start. It was an impulse buy and I had a great summer road tripping in it, cant complain about that!
Now that my job is work-from-home permanently, sometimes I tempt the idea of driving something like this, since I don’t need to rely on a car for much these days. I won’t, though, but it’s still fun.
The 'more' expensive Rangeys came with a factory supplied picnic basket in the back. So you had something to do while you are sitting on the side of the road, waiting for the tow truck to show up. That's what the rubber mat in the rear you got so excited about was for - because you didn't want to get your backside wet sitting on the grass, when it invariably broke down on the wettest day of the year. If there's no leaks on a Rangey, its because there's no fluid left in the reservoir... Even a good looking dog is still a dog, Hoovie. Doesn't matter whether its a pedigree or a mongrel. Give the interior a scratch - it's sure to smell of lemon.
Bought one like yours in 2016 but it is a 2013. I t was a pre owned CPO car. Since I have owned it, I have had zero issues/ nothing wrong- touch wood. Enjoyed your video and good luck!

HOOVIE READ THIS BEFORE THROWING PARTS IN THE CAR: Hear me out about the air suspension DTC. These cars have air suspension exhaust which lets air out of the system when you need lower pressure (lower ride height for example). On this exhaust port, there is a tiny metal muffler which looks like a bronze colored pinky finger with million little holes in it. This muffler is screwed on (10mm spanner) and serves only one purpose, to muffle the hissing sound when letting air out (the fart). Problem with this muffler is that over time, it gets gunked up with white stuff from the system (compressor lube maybe) and becomes clogged, so doesn’t let the air out, so the pressure doesn’t decrease when it tries to let the air out. There are two repairs to this: 1. Replace the tiny muffler, 2. (And i kid you not, this is what we officially were doing at the dealership), drill a hole in it. Both repairs have the same effect, only the second one is a little cheaper. The car doesn’t need a compressor if it is able to raise itself in a reasonable time, but yes the compressor will eventually need to be replaced because it has a plastic piston.
My brother bought a used, mid 90s Range Rover back in 1997-98, as his first car after getting his first "real" job out of college. Not long after he got it, the a/c quit working. Took a look at it for him. Has a freon leak...the rear a/c hard lines were routed across the top of the left rear wheel well, where any random piece of road trash could be thrown off the tire and knock a hole in it. Decided then and there that anyone stupid enough to put freon lines in the wheelwell probably had even more problems you couldnt see
Yeah, probably a good owner who kept it well maintained. Made the smart decision and sold it just as it was getting into the mileage range where the timing chain failures start.
I see future repair videos on this one, depending on how long he keeps it. On a ranger rover broken in is usually followed shortly by broken down, Let see how much he likes it if it leaves him stranded - we wish you good luck Tyler. TICK...TICK...TICK......
A neighbour of mine has an 07 one of these that he dailies. Not the sure which engine. Every time I see him pull up in it I am doubly surprised: that the thing hasn't destroyed itself after all these years, and that it seemingly hasn't bankrupted him keeping it on the road.

We took it on a long test drive including a little light off roading (basically an unpaved road). I came away impressed and completely understood the Range Rover mystique after. Unfortunately that trip was only one of three he made in it before it ended up in a series of shops and was eventually deemed “unrepairable”.
So much for "certified".....
This sounds like the entire Range Rover experience in one post.
Haha nice plot twist!
You were impressed and mystified after driving on an unpaved road?
people need to be certified as insane for buying one, I wouldn't touch anything with the LR badge with a barge pole.
i had a 2012 one of these for 3 years, when it was running right, it was a fantastic vehicle........but.......the cost of repairs and especially parts was beyond eye opening. i would strongly suggest that anyone interested in one of these have the extra cash to pay for the expected service/repair bills that will accompany this guy.
Thing is, you can only deal with major failures so much and eventually get tired of its maintenance. You’ll be off spending more in repairs a year than the cars value lol. I would strongly recommend someone interested in these to not get it unless you’re getting a brand new one.
Wizard loves Range Rovers like Ninja loves BWMs. Neither of them will ever want for work which pays really well.
I’ve owned both and really you must do your research and buy the right models of BMW and LR for reliability. That said I have found LRs best products to be much better than BMWs best

Pretty sure Clarkson’s Range Rover is a V8 diesel. Not supercharged.
And isn't his a full size range and not sport?
Correct, not a sport but an l322 RR with a tdv8
No his is a 3.6 diesel
But is still a Ford-designed Lion TD.
They did both a 3.0L V6 (a version of it was used in the US-spec F-150 / Lobo pickup until '21 MY) and a 4.4L V8.

Jeremy Clarkson's Diesel Range Rover was mechanically totaled after both turbos failed in 2020 which flooded the engine with oil.
If you're going to correct someone you should at least make sure you're right.
Hi Tyler, here are some surprises 😊
This Sport is actually based on the LR3.
@@electrikoptik Gen 2 is also uses disco chassis components apparently.
EDIT: I'm wrong, it's the other way around.
nah. its the unreliability that makes it a range rover

For that suspension error I had that same error on the 2013 RRS. I replaced the compressor. Issue was still there. I found out it was the middle air suspension reservoir valve block.
This looks super nice for a 2010 car! Great exterior styling and classy looking interior, actually really like it!
I like it but sheesh 💵💵💵
Was balling in 2010. Land Rovers were cool back then
Same colour and trim as my FIL’s RRS, his is 2012 Diesel which has a minor facelift including different gear selector and tailgate. I rebuilt the air suspension compressor and refurbished the air dryer with a kit for about £80. That sorted the suspension issues he was having.
Valve blocks can be an issue if the air dryer granules have turned to powder and got past the filters.

i own one right now (2012). it’s at 110k mi… literally the most reliable car i’ve owned so far. i’ve owned 2 MB GLs. a 2010 GL350 (i know don’t judge me i sold it luckily) a nightmare, a 2013 GL450… wasn’t THAT bad actually, but i had to replace the entire suspension, and now i currently own a 2013 GL550 and i knew what i was getting myself into because of the 450 being the same exact chassis. since owning the RR sport all i had to replace was lower control arms and normal maintenance. that’s it. i am waiting on the timing chain issue, but other than that, SOLID. no other suspension issues what’s so ever. i was even shocked (no pun intended) 😵💫
All these terrible cars you mentioned, what you consider reliable is not the same for the average consumer.
@@luiscartagena497 ok, the second gen GL is not unreliable!
The reality is that most people can’t afford it new, and they can’t afford the maintenance for a used rover.

Ur a masochist, arent u?
LR does not deserve its poor reputation for reliability. I have owned 3 good ones, just stay away from the early L322 and P38.

Rule of thumb: never buy high end car traded in at a working man’s dealership. The prior owner couldn’t afford the maintenance.
Those are typically auction cars.
I understand the sentiment but this one time case as shown in this video proves otherwise so that must mean to only buy Range Rovers at GM dealers. Better yet, I'm going to look for an Aston at the local Mitsubishi Dealer!
@@jenkinsjohn15 that would be pushing your luck just a bit 👍

The L320 series was actually a big step forward in reliability from prior Land Rovers and Range Rovers as its underpinnings were entirely Discovery/LR3/LR4, meaning not the most unreliable Range Rover ever, but hey, the title gets views I totally get it. Most of the issues they have are as common as a Honda Accord or any other normal car like sensors or AC compressors, unless of course you count the air suspension and to be fair, every vehicle in this category with air suspension is going to have issues with time and use.
That's not a high bar to have surpassed, though.
"They're probably worth owning, if you have a competent mechanic in a small town in a cheap part of the country who doesn't charge much."

This is one of my favorite Range Rovers 😁
They also only made 250 in the autobiography trim that year, all Santorini black, and 3 different two tone interior options
