  • It's almost hard to believe when you see endless videos of people riding bikes in Utrecht that at lunchtime, people walking completely take over many areas of the historic city center areas.

As a born and raised Utrechter, I can affirm that many office workers and retail workers choose to stretch their legs during lunch break. Did so myself for many years, it’s a healthy habit just like biking to work. 😊

Some might be going to buy lunch, but most are just stretching their legs. Some will eat lunch first at their place of work and then join colleagues on their walk, while others will eat their lunch while walking. And it's always in groups. You rarely see someone taking a lunchtime stroll by themselves. We just like moving in herds because then we can chat while exercising :D

I used to work in this area. Couple of years on "this" side of the railway tracks, last 7 years just across the tracks. The Moreelsebrug (pedestrians and cyclists) across the tracks is an important part of their route.
Most people just do a walk through the city center; some may eat their (homemade) lunch walking.

I also think that's the case. They've had their quick lunch in their office (home brought sandwiches or something from the company restaurant/canteen), and then go for a stroll. We Dutch don't really go to restaurants for lunch (and it seems only the younger generation is willing to spend money every day on take-out coffee & food).

@@ActiveTowns I don't know what these commenters are on about. As someone with many years of hospitality experience in Rotterdam at least, i can definitely confirm that a lot of these people are getting lunch. People don't really go to a restaurant per sé, but takeout sandwiches and such are very popular during lunchbreaks. Might be people from outside the Randstad, where this stereotypically frugal Dutch behavior is more prevalent. I don't think it's generational as my mom who is close to retirement does this as well. It is more prevalent nowadays as opposed to 15 years ago, simply due to there being more interesting places to get lunch at.

I used to walk there almost every workday, mostly for air/movement/social reasons, and I only bought a sandwich along the way 1/10 times I think. We also had a restaurant inside our office building, and besides, most of us brought lunch from home.
But if our schedules and the weather could accommodate it, we would often form a little group to go for a stroll.
Good networking too, since the people from our biggest clients did the same thing!
Also: certain sandwich shops could inspire cravings 😂

It's a Dutch thing that you see in many places with many offices: employees will combine lunch with a walk. It is not always a walk TO the lunch. I can also be that people have lunch at the cantine at work, and then go for a half an hour or 20 minutes stroll after that...

I don't think they are going for lunch. 1) Larger companies have restaurants/canteens where employees have lunch (usually home-made sandwiches supplemented with soup or a snack. 2) we Dutch are way to frugal to every day buy lunch in a restaurant or take-out (most real restaurants are not open for lunch anyway and we don't consider fastfood (McD, KFC etc) appropriate for lunch) . 3) when working in a large office, we do like to complete our lunch brake with a 20-30min stroll. So most of these people are probably just out for a walk.
