  • I went on a fly fishing trip to southern Utah with my college buddy Dr. Codd. A good portion of the mountain was still inaccessible but we were able to get to several lakes and ended up catching a lot of fish.

    Love the videos. I've been looking at the Boulder Top areas for a long time, more than 10 years. This month a good buddy and I finally made the trek up. Started off Road 178 and went up from there from the town of Bicknell. I thought I had researched it all pretty well, but only one lake up there this year was producing, very disappointing trip. From watching your videos it looks like mostly lower areas, off the bench top. I've got a lot more homework to do, need to find an areas that is actually producing. We had a great time, but not anything what we expected or anticipated.

      Unfortunately there was a big kill off up top during the 2018/2019 winter. Even lakes that rarely winter kill died off that winter. There are some lakes up top that produce big fish if they survive a few years. It's definitely a safer bet fishing the rim lakes but even some of those lakes winter kill from time to time

      Yeah it's gorgeous country down there. If you're moving to Logan you'll be not too far from some other awesome ranges. The Uintas , Tetons and especially the Wind River range are all amazing.

    awsome content! what is your go to scud pattern? size and color?

    • @TroutHowler
      @TroutHowler  5 років тому

      It's called a fast sinking scud . It's a Rich Osthoff pattern. I use a size 12 olive/gray most of the time in alpine lakes but I also tie them in pink and orange. I tie them in sizes 16, 14, 12 and a size 8 orange version that Rich calls a mega orange scud. The mega orange is deadly when fished deep with a shooting head line. Most of my truly big brookies have been caught on a mega orange scud.

    How are the smaller lakes down there? I heard a lot of them experienced severe winter kill? What have you found?

    • @TroutHowler
      @TroutHowler  5 років тому +1

      There was a massive kill off up top---not all lakes but a lot of them. A few rim lakes killed off as well. The lakes that have aerators on them seemed to have surivived as far as the ones I visited this year

    Awesome video! I’m going to sub! I have a question though. What line do you use to fish those lakes?

    • @TroutHowler
      @TroutHowler  5 років тому +1

      For most of those lakes I use a floating line with a ten foot leader most of the time. Occasionally I'll use a sink tip but not often.

    • @TroutHowler

      I let the vast majority go but I still eat some from places that have abundant fish populations. I haven't shown that in any of my videos as of yet but I probably will from some of my up coming trips in the spring and summer
