I always felt Conan as a character was the lone frontiersman and outlaw ready to explore and unearth new mysteries of the uncharted, but at the same time, a tribal warrior thirsty for battle. Undoubtedly pure American. I would add Conan with a bit of Celt he is a cowboy and Indian cooked up in a cauldron.
Being English myself, I do agree that S&S is primarily an American genre - whereas High or Epic Fantasy belongs more to Tolkien. And yes, I much prefer the harder, leaner edges of S&S. Great review 😁
Thanks for watching, yeah and to me Tolkein, among other things brought in a strong Nordic and Germanic influence of lore, legend and Myth respectively to his work with him being from that part of the world much like Howard drinking in all that surrouned him. And to add his service in War brought another outlook in his storytelling.
Excellent point about sword and sorcery being very much an American genre at its core. At least Howard's sword & sorcery anyway.
