FIREFLY! The best show to ever be cancelled because FOX didn't know what they had and kept moving the time slot, switching the days, airing them out of order, and Nielsen's Ratings are totally bs.
sometimes shows are cancelled for cost production not because the ratings weren't hight enough. Take Vampire Diaries all it took was Alena Gilbert (aka ?) to leave and they canceled a popular TV show. Truly miss it. Now Netflix sometimes will pick up the cancelled tv show the network didnt want anymore.
The best way to measure what people watch so by looking at the popularity list of streaming sites that host links to pirated tv shows and movies, by far.
Two shows which I feel were screwed up due to early cancellations were Enterprise and Dollhouse. I think they could have gotten much more fitting endings if they hadn't rushed a conclusion together, even if the shows themselves weren't particularly amazing to begin with. I also would have liked to have seen how Ringer would have ended.
Alexander Ulvnas Futurama was still being creative and funny but most people watch it on-demand via Netflix because it's primary audience seems to appeal most to internet culture. Unfortunately for the show, the very culture it targeted was the least likely to sit down and watch it at a specific time because they were the first to drop cable TV in favor of streaming so the show did horribly in the ratings. :l
It was the simpsons and the NFL playoffs that kept robbing Space: Above and Beyond of air time... One day would be the Simpsons ending at 8pm when Space: A&B would come on BUT the NFL HAD to have their Pregame show instead when the game started at 9 sometimes 10... Then when it all seemed to fall back in line for Space:A&B to continue it's WEEKLY Schedule... Simpsons decided 2hr long special episodes for the upcoming NEW HALLOWEEN EPISODE was a great idea... And then suddenly Syfy is playing X-files season 1 through whatever for a new season to start... Space:A&B was trashed after that... AND YEARS LATER X-FILES PICKS BACK UP AGAIN... WHY??? Why not any of these other shows that had their time slots stolen and were never finished???
Dinasours...The comedy one, where they talk and the baby one always hits the Dad with stuff. They all wear clothes and stuff, it's animatronics I think.
+Brendon Fields that's so funny, i was just thinking about that show the other day!!! I was young, but i recalled it being funny!! even looked up some episodes of it
The future of your favorite #television shows hinges on their #ratings. But where do they come from? In this episode of BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks, learn how TV ratings work.
And pushing daisies obviously. The startling minimalism, mixed with the combined cuteness of all the kittens in the world, made it a great show. It's as if le fabuleux destin d'amelie poulain got its own show.
Firefly, Terra Nova, Jericho, The Tomorrow People, aaaand the list goes on. Nielsen Ratings are BS. They should have at the very least a much larger sampling size, but they're making the money on what they use now, so why go to a larger size right?
I would bring back "Terra Nova". It was a great show, with great acting and a great storyline. The problem is not the show. The problem was the day of the week and the time slot they aired show. I can guarantee that those are the reasons the show failed.
Thanks for making this video, I knew that advertising space was valued based on ratings, and that the networks were getting some kind of feedback from viewers, but I did not know about Nielsen and the black boxes. This cleared it up👍
Nielsen now use microphones in their devices that listen to the audio that comes out of your tv/ipad/whatever is in the room. They listen for audio "watermarks" (digital signatures) which are embedded into the shows/movies.
Robotomy needs to be brought back! It was so good, but got axed because it had the great misfortune of being aired in Cartoon Network's recession. It would be such a huge hit today!
If I could bring back one show, it would be either 'The River' or 'Persons Unknown.' Both left off with amazing cliffhangers and I would really like to see these shows completed.
Unfortunately ratings are what killed Futurama time and time again. It's audience is no doubt the "internet culture" which is a huge audience but ironic enough, the very audience that dropped cable TV in favor of online streaming. Result being horrible ratings and yet another undeserved cancellation. Proof being that Futurama has just as much if not more reaction gif's and memes related to it than just most TV/movie's out there. There came a point when the show just knew what it was doing well and proceeded to do it perfectly.
The Quest. Only got one season on ABC but it was fantastic. Hard to get even that one season anywhere nowadays though. I think it's on Google Play and the apple store.
I would love to bring back Static Shock, but also i would need the original Teen Titans back as well. That new teen titans go crap they have on cartoon network isn't working for me! It's not tyhat it's an enherrently bad show, It's the fact that they took a great show and heavy remade it aimed towards younger children. I miss the days with cool show that both the young and old could enjoy. Heck, my dad was the one who introduced me to Static Shock in the first place.

Last Man Standing, hands down, was awesome and should have never been cancelled! I watch reruns now on line. I'm starting to think that television is on its way out:)

I always thought they counted everyone. If I could bring a show back, it would be "Smash." I don't know what they'd do with the story, but I would have liked more.
Fringe! It was an amazing show, but it had low ratings, so it was eventually cancelled after 5 seasons. They were able to bring the show to a great conclusion before it ended, though. Fringe felt like a high-budget movie; it was epic! They don't need to bring it back, but they definitely could. Also, Star Trek: Enterprise. That one just ended to soon, albeit it with a satisfying conclusion, but it should still be brought back.
Eli Stone!!! If I could bring back a show. I'd be Eli Stone hands down. Had Jonny Lee Miller and Julie Gonzalo. Man it could have been great, had they given it more time.
Don't know whether ABC will renew it or not, but Agent Carter hit a ratings low with its finale. However, I'm sure that many people (like myself) watched it on Hulu Plus. Nielsen needs to catch up with the times.
Nice and brief. However you mentioned only the "overnight ratings" which uses the box. Ratings that determine ad rates and shows staying or going, still rely on "sweeps weeks" in Nov, Feb, May and July and those ratings still rely on the Nielsen Diary (tvdiary.nielsen.com/content/panel/tvdiary7-en-feb2014/home.html) The crazy part about that, is that clearly the "box" can provide accurate data as it is digitally recording what is being watched, while the diary can be manipulated or just filled out incorrectly.
"As the world turns" so does the soap operas for the tv world. Anyone have any top ten new soap operas ideas? that should be aired to save or at least get ratings in for the news, weather, game and sports channels. New generations are entering and I'm afraid soap operas may not be the same anymore for that case. Maybe I'm wrong however soap operas in the afternoons do make a difference, a huge difference.

In general the cable company doesn't know what you're watching. I'm sure more and more with digital boxes they can but if they could track what everyone was watching, it wouldn't be so easy to steal cable.
The biggest problems with set top box data is that it they're typically always on and have no way of determining who in the household is actually watching. The Nielsen box gets down to user level, not just household level. That being said, set top box may be a good supplement to a Nielsen panel.
Here's a question: Why, how, and when did gas prices become "something" 9/10ths? Why that fraction after the price? Also, why don't other products on the market use this? Why is it only gas, or so it seems. You can also answer how gas gets it's prices :) Just another curious human being!
I don't know if tax is included or not but they always have a 9/10th symbol after the gas price. Plus my mom always adds one extra penny when she tells me the price of gas. It could be taxes though, who knows?
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks That's awesome! My mom said her father told her a story of how it happened but I don't know if it's credible or some cute story haha Thanks a lot guys! Keep bringing us the great videos :)
I want somebody to pay to have the rest of the Berserk anime made, could you do that? It stopped after one season and then they made three movies that covered the exact same material. Annoying they cut Devil Dogs from both, which I can understand to a point but they should have just skipped the family getting murdered and used as .... well anyway the fight after that is important. If you think Game of Thrones is too violent then Berserk isn't for you and everything else seems kinda tame in comparison. It's pretty much the most metal thing that every existed and I want it back.

So you glossed over the biggest question of all - how is Nielson tracking the new ways people watch TV?
Nielsen boxes are incredibly antiquated. The advent of cable made it extremely easy for cable companies to collect data on viewership.
Neilson is also in Australia
How do they cneck ratings now? Does every tv now have a box built in reporting?
