    At approximately 11:19 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2020, two Russian Su-27 Flanker pilots intercepted a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber that was conducting routine operations in the black sea over international waters. The Russian pilots crossed within 100 feet of the nose of the B-52 multiple times causing wake turbulence.
    The B-52 Stratofortress aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace exercising our freedom of navigation and overflight. The U.S. Air Force routinely operates aircraft in the region in accordance with recognized international safety standards as prescribed in International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules of flight.

    The Sukhoi Su-27 (Russian: Сухой Су-27; NATO reporting name: Flanker) is a Soviet-origin twin-engine supermaneuverable fighter aircraft designed by Sukhoi. It was intended as a direct competitor for the large United States fourth-generation fighters such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle, with 3,530-kilometre (1,910 nmi) range, heavy aircraft ordnance, sophisticated avionics and high maneuverability. The Su-27 was designed for air superiority missions, and subsequent variants are able to perform almost all aerial warfare operations. It was designed with the Mikoyan MiG-29 as its complement.
    The Su-27 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1985. The primary role was long range air defence against American SAC B-1B and B-52G/H bombers, protecting the Soviet coast from aircraft carriers and flying long range fighter escort for Soviet heavy bombers such as the Tu-95 "Bear", Tu-22M "Backfire" and Tu-160 "Blackjack".
    There are several related developments of the Su-27 design. The Su-30 is a two-seat, dual-role fighter for all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions. The Su-33 'Flanker-D' is a naval fleet defense interceptor for use on aircraft carriers. Further versions include the side-by-side two-seat Su-34 'Fullback' strike/fighter-bomber variant, and the Su-35 'Flanker-E' improved air superiority and multi-role fighter. The Shenyang J-11 is a Chinese licence-built version of the Su-27.

      Yeah this is definitely an old practice and this was just another uneventful encounter. But the Russians have been flying more aggressively the last 10 years & sometimes get dangerously close to US recon/bomber planes & naval ships. There have also been near collisions. Supposedly they are trying to dissuade the US from patrolling certain areas even though they are in International airspace/waters. I think all they’re really accomplishing, though, is making our military nervous & pissing them off. Hopefully, these little stunts won’t get out of hand.

      @@razaqadeanova3255 The Su-27 design is primarily focused on BVR, built around a huge fighter radar and 10 AAM load with around 20,000lb of internal fuel.
      If you look at this, they're armed with R-27ER semi-active radar homing missiles in the tunnel (stations 1 & 2 for them) and stations 3 & 4, and R-73 IR HOBS missiles on 5 & 6.
      This is a BVR-heavy configuration with a radar-guided missile using 1960s-1980s technology and out-dated guidance methods reminiscent of the US AIM-7 era (Vietnam through Desert Storm), which was replaced by 4 models of the AIM-120 starting in the early 1990s.
      The Soviet Union started a missile modernization program after gaining the AIMVAL/ACEVAL reports, resulting in the R-73 Helmet-cued HOBS and R-77 active radar (AMRAAMski) missiles.
      Development and production of the R-77 was done primarily in Ukraine SSR, so when the collapse began, momentum in R-77 development came to a halt.
      This is why we still see Su-27s with R-27ER extended range (energia radar-guided) missiles.
      It would be akin to seeing an F-15C+ carrying 1980s-era AIM-7s.
      When we tested the R-27s left in East Germany, and took them to instrumented ranges to be fired against drones, they turned out to be extremely low pk, failure-prone missiles that have a hard time hitting even non-maneuvering targets.
      The R-73 was the opposite, extremely lethal with very high pk, and the helmet-cueing worked.

      They probably be as cool with Russian bomber near Florida as they are the routine flight of bombers near Alaska. The reality of it is no reasonable person is angry or upset about Russian aircraft intercepting American bombers. The main issue is Russian pilots preforming risky maneuvers during said interception. The flying across the nose move that the Russian pilot did could ended in a mid air collision if the pilot man a mistake.

      Actually, according to the in-flight intercept procedures, the abrupt turn across the nose is the final warning signal, it means "Turn immediately in my direction, and follow me!"
      However, the situation is taken out of context. The interceptor is at no point supposed to tip the wings. So I'm guessing is both crews thinking "Do we really have to play this game again?? Let's go home instead"...

      Apart from SU flying too close to nose of B52 causing turbulence.
      What they did is standard interception procedure that happens all the time.
      First fly behind an intercepted aircraft.
      Then fly next to it from pilot side (usually left for planes and right for helis)
      Intercepted plane is supposed to be the one waving wings. Here it was interceptor doing it. As such it was probably just a hello(wouldn't be surprised if they see eachother every week).
      If intercept is to happen NOW. Fly in front of intercepted plane. Intercepted plane is supposed to follow as best as possible now.
      And well B 52 most likely eventually did just that. But probably took sweet time to do just that using it size as excuse to gather as much data as possible. I mean those excursion are done with biggest and least maneuverable possible plane for a reason.
      Such incursions into each other airspace and thus intercepts happens all the time.

    This is generally an interception in international space reletive to the incoming aircraft.
    In this case, the Su deliberately and cautiously flies up the left side of the intercepted aircraft to ascertain a visual with the pilots. This is to verify any pilot issues that may have occured.
    If the intercepting jet rocks it's wings it's to acknowledge they have intercepted your aircraft and if they fly across the aircaft to the right that shows that the intercepted aircraft is to follow the jet. At least until they establish the aircrafts reason for not squawking their ID to localised ATC or departing from their depicted flight pattern.
    Happens to passenger airlines quite commonly.
    Is it friendly? In a way, but it's certainly serious.

    • @generalripper7528
      @generalripper7528 3 роки тому +10

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but the part where the Su-27 flies in front of the B-52 is considered a dangerous manoeuver and is not part of a standard interception.

    • @JGlosz
      @JGlosz 3 роки тому +11

      General Ripper it’s standard interception practice to fly in front of the intercepted aircraft and turn in the direction you want the intercepted aircraft to follow. Here in the US, if you bust a presidential TFR, no matter what kind of plane you are, the fighters that show up will do exactly that.

    I knew a Chief Warrant Officer in the Army, Vietnam Vet, who used to fly border patrol in West Germany with Cobra gun ships. One time a Russian Hind helicopter flew parallel with him on his side of the East German border. Everything the Cobra did, the Hind mimicked. So, CW4 Daugherty decided to have some fun and he pulled up and performed a barrel roll. The Hind attempted the same maneuver and crashed into the ground. Before he could get anyone else in the area to photograph it, because we didn't have a lot of information about them back then, the East Germans already had tarps set up over all the wreckage. He told me that he got a little bit of a tongue lashing from the Colonel, but his heart wasn't in it. Wink. Wink. Nod. Nod.

Both aircraft were able to return safely, but it was a brazen display of numbskull behavior.
