On a clear day from the top of Mt. Diablo, you can see all the way to Yosemite Nat'l Park.

24 is the second best drive after 280 in the Bay. such a pretty route.

Best non-interstate drive in the Bay Area that's for sure!

A bit of trivia: Hwy 242 was actually part of 24, until the mid-to-late 80's. In fact, until the early 60's, SR 24 ran all the way to Sacramento. It followed Hwy 4 from Martinez to Antioch, and then the current route of SR 160, to Sacramento.

On a clear day Driving out of Sacramento either on I-80 west or I-5 south you can see Mt Diablo in the distance from there too.

I once saw Mt Diablo from U.S. 50, descending from Placerville.

@@InterstateKyle I grew up in SF, and I could see Mt Diablo from my kitchen window.

It's weird why that route has I-980 as one portion near Downtown Oakland in the same carriageway as CA 24. If I-980 didn't exist, that portion would've belonged to CA 24. I-980 is named the John B. Williams Fwy, CA 24 in Alameda County is named the Grove Shafter Fwy, but a portion of CA 24 in Contra Costa County is unnamed. I enjoyed seeing the stretch of CA 24 again, but I know FWJ did it a few times during his travels last decade.

I hate those people who stop to enter the Caldecott tunnel

  • @andyjay729

With the temperature difference at both ends of the tunnel in summer, are there ever any temperature related winds or at least noticeable air pressure gradients through the tunnel on certain extreme days?

The interstate geek part of me wishes that the 980 designation was used for all of CA-24 as well since both effectively make up one contiguous highway and even share exit numbers. Maybe it's because the eastbound bores of the Caldecott Tunnel aren't up to interstate standards since there are no shoulders in either of the bores. Great video nevertheless!

SR-242 used to be an extension of SR-24 until 1987.
