WORKING WITH LIMITATIONS

  • In the last few years, there has been a huge interest in the emerging research and findings pertaining to training with specific limitations and less direct technical guidance. It goes by many names: Constraint-led approach, ecological approach, non-linear pedagogy, etc.
The idea is that rather than overly burden the student with specific technical data, they are given an over-riding goal in a given drill, and then aspects of either the environment, the performer, or the task are modified. One way this can be done is through the imposition of limitations.
Some years back, I posted this very same video, but I ended up taking it down because people didn't understand. and I was simply tired of the comments. It's the type of work that if you just watch it without context, you can easily dismiss it. The minute you perform this type of work, however, the challenge, stress inoculation, and adaptability benefits are obvious. So, because I'm getting a lot of questions about this work again and now more and more people are seeking this type of training, I'm reposting the clip for those who get it.

I actually do something similar to my abled bodied students, so that can adapt in situations of injury and even relate to others with various disabilities

Learning how to target weakness is learning how to defend what is most likely to be attacked. It is the same as hiring a white hat hacker to find and document vulnerabilities in your IT systems.

Surprised about the fact that people might react in a negative way to this concept.
Very well spoken, as always. You are an extremely good teacher.
Also, I didn't expect the shibari class on a Kevin Secours vid 😂

Technically it’s hojojutsu-yet another topic I took a lot of vids down about. People always go to sex jokes without realizing the complex history of Japanese rope work for prisoner transportation. If you watch my trailer for my download Bound you can get a good idea of the application. It’s still taught in military circles.

@@systemacanada . Hehe. I just counted. I have 97 of your downloads from your old site and the new, including the complete levels 1-6 (except the teaching one which was next on my list, but then the change over happened)... but still haven't acquired Street Proof. I guess I know what my next purchase will be. Thanks for your excellent work.

Everyone was doing striking with the pads but no one threw in the head butt? I've been hanging out over at the fight fast Channel because of Paul Vunak and he knows how to throw quite a beautiful head butt in his old films. I've been watching you since I was a teenager but then you know. I just got done saying the same thing to Master Wong and his Wing Chun Kung Fu. I saw this other guy doing pankration Arventis or something. Is that a combat system you've ever played around with?
I remember reading a big thing on you years and years ago, and you had a bunch of different martial arts even some Hawaiian stuff which looks very similar to pankration. I'm pretty sure you've dabbled in all of it because I see all kinds of transitions in your stick work and ground movements. I can bet you've had some exposure to the Filipino martial, arts the Japanese, the Middle East, the French with savat. I think you're the only one still giving life to Russian Systema the other instructors well I'm sure you've seen the videos. Your still the best.

I use a lot of headhunts and biting myself. You’ll see it in other videos, but these particular clips were limitation drills. Sometimes we will try to use the arms despite them being limited-to reinforce
The futility if you will, then when we allow the rest of the body it helps people get passed the inhibition. As you know a lot of people resist the headbutt initially . Yes Paul”s headbutt is world class.

Your still the best I had no idea you did E&e/anti kidnapping. I was following up with Jason Hanson Matei Ed Calderon Byron Rodgers Libra knife fighting and the urban combatives guy's online. Nothing like hitting back upnthe roots of the tree. This wound and adapt stuff, I've only seen Matei @tribe13 or tactical combat systems showcase.
