It's time for a BMW M3 v BMW M3 drag race!!
That's right, we've got the new BMW M3 xDrive going head-to-head with the standard BMW M3 RWD, and we want to see just how much performance differs between these saloon powerhouses.
Given they're just AWD & RWD models, they're powered by the exact same engine - a glorious 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that puts down 510hp & 650Nm of torque. There are a few minor differences though... The AWD system adds 50kg of weight compared to the RWD edition, and it'll also cost you £3,000 more!

I think the xdrive version drives all the time in higher speeds only with RWD. So there will be no real difference

Carbon ceramic brakes do not brake harder, especially when cold.
They just have more endurance on a track, preventing brake fading.
and worse in the wet (especially cooler temps)
True. I don't get people who "love" and "want" carbon ceramic brakes. They are truly meant for hard road course driving because they get rid of the heat better. Daily driving you would see better braking with regular steel brakes. Plus, if you crack a carbon ceramic brake (which can happen from road debris), there's a few grand for 1 brake.....

11.3 seconds quarter mile is just carzy for an M3. It's only 0.3 seconds slower than an M8 and only 0.2 seconds than an M5. It's AMAZINGGG
you will see the big difference if you increase hp nobody runs stock at this time

No point in doing that. No one buys an all wheel drive car just to put it in RWD when doing a drag race.
Just like no one buys a 500HP car just to tune it down to 76HP to see if it matches a Toyota Corolla.

I think that the AWD version is absolutely worth the extra. Considering that you can just go RWD. I dont why you would get the RWD version over the AWD

Rwd will handle better on a track and its slightly faster in gear. If you put sticky tyres on the rwd it would be fantastic on track. Xdrive is also annoying with tyre tread. On each axle they need to have the same amount of wear. So if u get a flat tyre you have to replace both. Its annoying.

Doing that then the tire manufactures would be upset. Because if a Bridgestone tire is slower than the Michelin in a straight line, then Bridgestone might not sponsor content on the channel. It's why critical reviewers have a hard time getting sponsored. If you ever watched Fortnine (motorcycle), they have over a million subs, but never got invited to a press day launch because Ryan is very detailed about his reviews. They're afraid he might give a bad review. So never once has he been flown out to some warm weather vacation spot to review a motorcycle, he does it well after launch in freezing Canada weather from lend dealer bikes. It's why a lot of manufacturers pay for reviews. It's why Ferrari do not have their pressed cars timed.

Maybe against an AWD Lexus IS ;lol:. My Lexus GS has a planetary diff. AWD is ALWAYS on thru this differential, no clutchpacks, so it allows for slightly different tires. If you lose traction on two wheels, the diff automatically locks with a clutch. The transmissions is the same six speed (maybe different clutches) as the Tundra, with a large transfer case. The only difference is the Trucks have a manual Tcase with low.

Why not put the AWD in RWD mode when rolling? Interested to see how that would turn out.
It would still lose as its carrying more weight.
The X-drive will be in RWD in the rolling race anyway. It basically only connects the front axle when it expects that the rear would slip otherwise or when it detects slip. And in the rolling race they are fast enough that there will be no slip in the rear so no need for the clutches in the drivetrain to close.
@@nirfz I don't think that is how the mdrive system works. It's not a traditional xdrive system.
Either way it is given that is will lose considering the weight and drivetrain loss but just curious on how much slower it would be. Would have been cool to see.
@@HyderMirza12 As far as i can find it is mechanically a "traditional X-drive". The only difference seems to be in the software.
For example the user switchable modes. (like 4wd sport or drift=rwd)
(A bit like the everywhere used ZF 8speed Auto. It's mechanically the same in a BMW, Jag or VW, but the programming is different and done by the manufacturers)

I think the difference is the “tune”? The awd is tuned for more acceleration, since its more heavy and doesn’t have to worry about getting traction 🤷♂️

Do you mean on the roll race? It's just reaction times. Other guy hitting hitting throttle a fraction of a second earlier. Also has huge impact on brake tests. That's why Vbox data is so important.

Not necessarily. Some will prefer the AWDs cornering abilities over the RWD. AWD can be pushed a bit harder coming out of the corner
personally id rather buy a cheap track car then take my new 90k bmw m3 on track, as good as it would be you can just have as much fun hooning a £2000 honda civic type r on track.

All wheel drive is a worthy addition. Not so much for the dry, but makes a massive difference on wet roads!

@Neon m3 X drive will definitely beat the rs6 as well, rs6 does a 11.4 second 1/4 mile, whereas the m3 x drive does it in 11.3
@Neon can you not think logically as to why I mentioned the times? The reason I mentioned the times is because the rs6 is faster than the rs4, but the m3 is already running faster times than the rs6 so what’s the point of racing it against an rs4?

Nice test. AWD dominates in off the line especially with computerized traction and drivetrains. Also AWD allows more aggressive gearing off the line. That said the extra curb weight and the extra drivetrain mass show in the roll on racing. Would be nice to incorporate drag racing timing lights to judge reaction times as well as accurate MPH data. Could still keep the "starter" but have it sync with the timing equipment.

And back in the day, when drag racing required real skill with a manual transmission, the difference was even bigger. Countless times i've seen Audi 80s/S2s/A4s/S4s destroying M3s straight from the launch even in completely dry and sunny day. Now with the autos it's just a matter of who's got the better mapper and some reaction time.

Audis were destroying BMWs and Mercs in drag races mainly because of the AWD system, while the other two are RWD, even a FWD is superior to RWD in drag races.
Back in the day, there were plenty of people drag racing with automatic transmission, bro.

@Biggest Dongle it's not really fake tho it's just louder. My old mk1 z4 3.0 had a pipe that channelled engine sounds to the cabin. Could remove the sponge fitler which restricted the noise so it would be louder. That's pretty much the same thing but this is digital instead of mechanical. When someone sings using a mic and speakers it's no faker than singing out loud right?
