I recently got lapiplasty bunion surgery, the best bunion surgery option out there in my opinion, and am making update videos for anyone interested in getting the surgery.
Thanks a lot, I am at week 9 and getting completely depressed as my foot is still red and I can walk but some pain...you saying it needs up to6 months helps a lot!
Michigan Foot Doctors thank you, could you do video on swelling thru the weeks, up to 8th week? There are no videos from what I’ve researched about swelling from week 1 to 8th week.
Thats a great idea, we will see what we can do. A good overall rule is after a surgery you get about 50% improvement of bone pain within 6 weeks, 75% at 3 months and 90-95% at about 6 months. Some heal quicker but be prepared for longer than you think when it is your foot.
Thanks for watching our video! We're sorry to hear about your problem and we really hope you feel better soon! Just remember to see your podiatrist in person if you are not feeling better in the future! Thanks for being a fan!
Super informative. I really appreciate you replying to comments. I learned even more! I'm heavily considering surgery to my left foot. The pain is becoming unbearable, I'm suffering every day and night. Thinking I want the shaving and the pins but I will consult a doctor and go from there
We know you want a more detailed response, and believe us if allowed we would love to give more specific information. I think I'm on the lucky end, but do have a couple questions at the end. I had a cheilectomy on my right foot, and an Austin bunionectomy on the left, 19 days ago. So far, it's gone like this: Day of: The anesthesia was wearing off before I woke up because my body metabolizes that stuff like it's a race. Day 5 post-op: Stopped pain meds It takes a tremendous amount of pain for me to reach for any meds. Three dry sockets after having my wisdom teeth taken out a week after a natural childbirth at home? Nope. No me. But this? Uh. Yeah. I needed it. Day 9 post-op: I drove myself to a bookstore. My husband offered to drive, but my right foot felt fine to do it. I used crutches, though, and the annoying shoes. Day 10 post-op: The next day, I went back to the bookstore, but without using crutches, and just the annoying shoe on the left foot. I decided screw the right shoe, at least, and put on one of my regular shoes, mindful of the gauze (yeah, I changed it when it came loose, and yes, I know how thanks to my medical history). (And then back to the bookstore on days 11 and 14--I'm a book-nerd.) Day 11 post-op: Sutures out. Walking around the house without those annoying shoes, though careful to walk on the outsides of my feet and wiggling my right (cheilectomy) toe around, figuring it's not like I can break it, like the other with the cut bone. I sleep with a brace on the left foot, and usually don't wear it when walking around the house, but I absolutely do when going out somewhere. Day 13: Incisions are both healed, remarkably so that I took pics to prove it, except for a tiny part at the forward-most part of my left toe, the one with the Austin. I've been carefully massaging that incision to prevent scar tissue from building of the incision from adhering to stuff. So far, so good, but scared to death to touch the right foot much. Day 16: I smashed my left foot, and holy crap OWE. 'Twill be fine, I decided. Day 17: I decided okay, ER-time. Pain + pus = not risking it. Infection. Antibiotics. Pain's tolerable. X-rays were done, and they said that the healing is "as expected", and not broken, and I'd been concerned about. Day 19: I can flex my right toe (cheilectomy) almost 90 degrees, and extend...well, 15-20 degrees, when there's not angry burning and my nerves deciding I need to suffer. The things I can't help but worry about are how long it'll be before that burning goes away, and my left (austin) toe doesn't have much movement yet. I have an appointment on day 25, and hopefully PT will start. I'm a dancer, and can't help but worry. So how long until the burning typically lets up, and when waiting to start PT util at least day 28 (day 25 is a Friday), am I likely to get any range of motion back in my bunionectomy foot?
Not specific to your situation, but the downside of a foot procedure is that it takes a lot of time! I can't tell you even from breaking my own toe, it takes forever! A good timeline is about 50% improvement in 6 weeks, 75% improvement in 3 months and then about 90-95% in 3 months is a tough estimate. At the beginning it feels like nothing is working, nerves are agitated and the stiffness will last forever, but then it's like a snowball where the symptoms start to get better and better. Every surgery takes time, for sure after that early of a time, things should get much, much better!
Great video Doctor! I just had a bunion removed from my large big toe. It looked like a hook and started separating from his four friends. I had my first post-op yesterday. I've been getting around pretty well with my walker and 4 prong cane. I do have a knee scooter. Besides all that, what kind of exercises can I do post-op? I have a body blade and peddle . I thought about just a lot of stretching. I'm taking for pain is tylenol. I was given torado and that was a disaster!
It can be normal to want to exercise and get better, but in post-op we like patients to keep it simple and just feel better, that can be hard to do for some people!
Thank you Dr for your information, I just had my operation before 20 days ago, I had flat foot and hallux valgus, I don't have much Swelling but I had pretty good pain at nights I feel my bons Rubbed inside my foot I'm not allowed to walk on it just less then 10kg pushing, as doctors said... I just got a minimal bunionectomy w/ distal osteotomy. Was fine most of the day bit have been in excruciating pain!! They only gave me meds that I take once a day. Def need to ask for diff. meds. I wish they had told me how painful it was ahead of time 😭
I got toe shortening and hammer toe surgery (arthodesis) and the incisions and surgical area it’s self didn’t hurt that much. But, it made me walk a certain way and it messed with my tendons
Lmao, 😂 I am 6 months in and I had three procedures done on my foot. I had a bunionectomy, foot Osteotomy, and a Fusion with Lapidus procedure. Only problem I had was being too nervous b4 surgery and couldn’t stop smoking cigs til day of surgery! Although I broke the rules and continued to vape a little bit I am still healing relatively great! I have a check up coming up as well! learning how to utilize crutches was not something I had to practice, however it does at time tire me out. I drink plenty water and eat well and take my medication and maintain my health very effectively! My weight also was definitely never an issue as I am a medium built guy 5’8” 148 to 175 fluctuating. I am just scared to walk at the moment until I have my 6 week follow up visit on 01-31-2024
I'm suffering 4 weeks out and don't know what to do....akin osteotomy 7/19 came home with no crutches just the surgical boot. Now my foot is still super swollen and can barely put any weight on it. 😥
I had to have bunion surgery years ago, it took forever to heal. This time my other foot is worse, the big toe has caused the second toe to become a hammer toe and the large toe goes underneath the second toe. Walking is wobbly. Now I understand there is Lapiplasty
Hey Doctor, are ligaments ever severed (or not severed) in bunionectomies? For surgeries which do not involve permanent plates/screws that inhibit joint movement, I'm hypothesizing that procedures that do not cut ligaments (if there are any) would promote better long-term healing.

So, I am a 21 y/o, active, healthy and I weight 167. I just had an Austin bunionectomy on my left foot 3 days ago. Seems like I am at the perfect age and health for a fast recovery (so I can only hope)!
How are you recovering ? Can u workout or go to the gym yet? I’m concerned about getting the surgery because i want to be able to run at least after a month
@@user-vu9gd8ed1h I recovered really fast. I was back to my normal running in under 2 months and I’ve been going to the gym. Once you’re cleared for activity, keep it moving as you do not want it to get stiff. Start with long distance walking to keep it lubricated.

So… I’m scheduled for an implant type surgery and I will have 8 weeks until I fly to DC to see my son! I wanted to be a pedestrian tourist! I could see us walking up to 5 miles! You wouldn’t advise this right time frame I’m guessing? Postpone surgery? When do the “dark days” typcially happen? Should I plan 4-6 months before that kid a trip? I know it’s hard to say without seeing my foot but a guesstimate is helpful.
Hello I’ve been listening to your videos on bunion surgery I had mine on July 12 of 2022 and I am in my two weeks I have a cast on now I tend to walk with my heels it’s just hard to get through to my house from room to room with crutches so I tend to just put the crutches Will that cost me any further damage if I just do it from time to time.
Hi Doc, I’m 2 weeks post op from my exostectomy on my right foot. Everything seems to be going well. I’m not going to a physical therapist I’m doing exercises at home. Would ultrasound therapy help with the healing?? I actually have an ultrasound system I use when I had knee surgery. Thank you so much for your videos Maria
Always talk to your doctor about something like that, don't do anything after a surgery that you didn't discuss with them just to avoid any risk. Hope you continue feeling better!
Hi Dr... very helpful thank you. Am about to get my surgery in December and my dr would only do one foot at a time. Am scared to death because of how many people are discouraging me due to the recovery time , but am at a point with my bunions I cannot wear closed flat shoes and can walk for more than 15 minutes before being in excruciating pain. What are your thoughts about doing one foot at a time.? second I cannot take narcotics what would be an alternative for pain.
Sorry we can't give specific advice, you have to trust your doc for you! Studies do show there is more benefit to doing one at a time, that is the standard, but everyone's situation is always different, we always find one at a time is a good choice.
I HAD A SIMPLE EXACECTOMY BUNION SHAVNG ONLY SURGERY .. I HAD NO PAIN.. AND COULD WALK AND WEAR SOFT SHOES IN 1 WEEK .. NOW AFTER 9 WEEKS ..( I DID ACCIDENTLY BUMP I FEW TIMES ) IT FINALLY LOOKS HEALED WELL BIT I NOTICED A VERY SMALL WEEPING EVERY 2 DAYS ON MY BANDAGE... IS THIS A CONCERN ??
I went in for a tailor bunion protruding on the right foot by my pinky toe, literally by the side of my foot. They told me to have it shaved because it wasn't so bad and I did. Now the bone feels like its protruding on the bottom of my foot, so when I go to walk I can feel a sharp stab right by the edge of my right foot on the right side of it. SMH will this go away and can it be due to swelling?
Foot surgery is tough because you put all your body weight on it, also patients usually have tightness and contractures that put pressure on that site ahead of time. We have patients consider good orthotics and good shoes in the 6 months following surgery for fastest relief. These can take 6 months or more to feel better!
Trust your doctor, we find these procedures do very well, but they can definitely take up to 6 months or more to be 100%, they almost always get a lot better
Definitely not giving specific advice, and always see a doctor. Yet we find that on average at less than 2 months or so it can be very difficult to ever tell the final result. For any type of surgery inflammation can impact nerve function, but we find generally 50% at 6 weeks, 75% at 3 months and 90% at 6 months. All surgery is tough, especially one that you have to walk on!
Hello I had bunion surgery to my left foot I am on my 6th week . I am alittle confused on what type of surgery I had . I think it’s considered minimally invasive as I had a milder bunion and only two incisions , but I had a pin placed in the bone for 3 weeks also. Anyway , my question js, at 6 weeks post op is it normal to still have lain and discomfort espy at night ? My foot likes to jerk while trying to sleep and sharp stabbing pains in my toe and foot almost like spams ? Swelling has gone down but this is my first week walking in the boot , and I’m expected to walk in shoes in a few days. Alittle nervous about that ! Thanks
It’s been 5 months after surgery, depending on the new shoe I wear, my foot hurts in a different place , and I end up limping before the day is over. What are your thoughts.
We find people have the most success wearing orthotics (even o Good over the the counter) with a good supportive shoes like Brooks or Asiics. There could also be a few very easily correctable things going on like a really tight calf or hamstring muscle.
We usually find the initial cause of the bunion could sometimes still be going on, leading to irritation even after the surgery (light a tight muscle on the same side)
Thank you doctor for the video , very informative . I’m on day 11 post op of Mc bride bunionectomy and I cannot put my feet on the floor because I’m scared the cut is open up . Doctor told me I can shower and wet my feet but I want to wait longer , is it necessary to open up to the air or I can keep it bandage for a while ? And is it ok if I wait until the stitch totally heal before I put weight on my foot ( left side ) ? Thank you doctor .
trust your doctor, they will be there for you if anything happens! if worried always give them a call and protect sites as much as possible! hope you feel better!
Both can do a great job for sure. There are many very quality doctors in both professions. Find a well recommended and rated doctor and you should be in great shape!
Hi my surgery is in June But I have let my doctor know that I wanted both of my feet done at once only because of work I have to get back to work right away and she told me that there’s another surgery where she can do it on both feet but it might come back again I’m 47 years old do you think that would be the best option option for me since I have to go back to work and I’m not able to take time off again to get the other one done I’m in severe pain and I need to get it done but I want both if you have any input on this and also do you think I would ever be be able to be a long ultra distance runner as I was before
Well my lady Podiatrist and I have a plan , alas I will be not an Easy- Peasy bunion surgery, so going " Sleepy-Bye" after all. Went from what I was hoping m.i. bunionectomy to my Left big toe trying to flirt with toe #3, # 2 is trying to cry out too so in "Pain City" A fusion & maybe more- lost 1/2 my body weight due to Bariatrics but the Breakdown of joints lingers on. Tengo 5 meses de operada los 2 pies y todavía me duele cuando camino mucho😮
When do you have to Get your second surgery if your doctor does them foot by foot?
Not specific to you, but this can vary per surgeon. It depends mostly on the life factors and health of the patient.
Generally most surgeons would consider atleast 3-6 months for some procedures
But these depend on individual examination!
Thank you very much... It was very helpful!
Hi Doc,
I’m 2 weeks post op from my exostectomy on my right foot. Everything seems to be going well. I’m not going to a physical therapist I’m doing exercises at home. Would ultrasound therapy help with the healing?? I actually have an ultrasound system I use when I had knee surgery.
Thank you so much for your videos
Maria
Always talk to your doctor about something like that, don't do anything after a surgery that you didn't discuss with them just to avoid any risk. Hope you continue feeling better!

Thank you!!
Thank you!
Hi Dr... very helpful thank you.
Michigan Foot Doctors thank you 😊
I am with you. Surgery on December. One foot at the time.
IS THIS A CONCERN ??
mine was botched...my tendon is messed up and is still hurting me 2 years later...
Thanks
I went in for a tailor bunion protruding on the right foot by my pinky toe, literally by the side of my foot. They told me to have it shaved because it wasn't so bad and I did. Now the bone feels like its protruding on the bottom of my foot, so when I go to walk I can feel a sharp stab right by the edge of my right foot on the right side of it. SMH will this go away and can it be due to swelling?
We find that on average with bone surgery patients take a long time for the swelling to go down, trust your doctor though!
Foot surgery is tough because you put all your body weight on it, also patients usually have tightness and contractures that put pressure on that site ahead of time. We have patients consider good orthotics and good shoes in the 6 months following surgery for fastest relief. These can take 6 months or more to feel better!
@@DrTomBiernacki Thank you! I will wait for more time to pass since the procedure was done early September.
Trust your doctor, we find these procedures do very well, but they can definitely take up to 6 months or more to be 100%, they almost always get a lot better
What does it mean when the top part of the toe is numb and seems to be paralyzed at 5 weeks?
Definitely not giving specific advice, and always see a doctor. Yet we find that on average at less than 2 months or so it can be very difficult to ever tell the final result. For any type of surgery inflammation can impact nerve function, but we find generally 50% at 6 weeks, 75% at 3 months and 90% at 6 months. All surgery is tough, especially one that you have to walk on!
Can patients develop arthritis post bunionectomy ?
We find people have the most success wearing orthotics (even o
Good over the the counter) with a good supportive shoes like Brooks or Asiics. There could also be a few very easily correctable things going on like a really tight calf or hamstring muscle.
We usually find the initial cause of the bunion could sometimes still be going on, leading to irritation even after the surgery (light a tight muscle on the same side)
What about lapiplasty?
Thank you doctor for the video , very informative . I’m on day 11 post op of Mc bride bunionectomy and I cannot put my feet on the floor because I’m scared the cut is open up . Doctor told me I can shower and wet my feet but I want to wait longer , is it necessary to open up to the air or I can keep it bandage for a while ? And is it ok if I wait until the stitch totally heal before I put weight on my foot ( left side ) ?
Thank you doctor .
Unfortunately we can't give you advice on a procedure online. Trust and ask your doctor with that one!
Thank you for reply doc !
Hope you are feeling better!
trust your doctor, they will be there for you if anything happens! if worried always give them a call and protect sites as much as possible! hope you feel better!

Should you see a podiatrist or an orthopedic surgeon?
Both can do a great job for sure. There are many very quality doctors in both professions. Find a well recommended and rated doctor and you should be in great shape!
Hi my surgery is in June But I have let my doctor know that I wanted both of my feet done at once only because of work I have to get back to work right away and she told me that there’s another surgery where she can do it on both feet but it might come back again I’m 47 years old do you think that would be the best option option for me since I have to go back to work and I’m not able to take time off again to get the other one done I’m in severe pain and I need to get it done but I want both if you have any input on this and also do you think I would ever be be able to be a long ultra distance runner as I was before
I am from India this problem with me please🙏 help me
Well my lady Podiatrist and I have a plan , alas I will be not an Easy- Peasy bunion surgery, so going " Sleepy-Bye" after all.
People Lose your weight- if that's still not enough- find a Good Podiatric Surgeon and progress from there!
I will try to uphold his image!

Why is he whispering in the video?
Not a great microphone for that video, but also I don't want to scare you about bunions!
It was rather creepy, doc.
@@DrTomBiernacki I appreciated it!
