even though the pop punk songs weren't hits played on the radio, i think they're the songs that left the biggest marks on 5sosfam. just like 5sos, we have grown and matured since 2014/2015 and that also meant growing to appreciate other music genres. i'll admit i wasn't sure how to feel about youngblood at first because self-titled was the album that really drew me in, but its years later and i have developed a special place in my heart for their newer sound.

I think right now the punk rock is kind of getting more and more popular and quite a lot artists had collaborated with travis barker and made such hits, so i think if the decide to try again that genre, it would be well received
I love how interesting it is to learn more about their journey and how the industry and how being in a band works, it's something that's not really explained by other artists and it's really cool that they're sharing that with us and like really explaining they're experience of the last ten years and stuff...yeah idk, it's cool

Michael was sad when the whole “Safety Pin” side of the band/ fandom relationship got changed (dropped) as SGFG was a real honest album
When Ashton was talking about being a punk rock band turning into a pop band all I could think about was Michael saying I can do what I want I’m punk rock😭😭
It’s amazing to hear how well spoken Ashton is. I’m not saying that because he’s my favorite member, I’m saying that as someone who likes to hear other intellectually comprehensive people. Intellectually stimulating conversations are a plus for me. So Ash, you are a very intelligent person! 😁❤️

them going through every year one by one brings back so many memories i can’t handle this
i could listen to these four talk for the rest of my life and feel blessed. it’s so fulfilling and surreal in a way to hear about them discuss every year after supporting this band for so long
I know that a lot of other people have already said this, and I know that conventional success is important to a band’s career, but SGFG was successful in so many ways and has meant so much to so many people. It’s the first time I can remember really listening to a song and feeling like the people who wrote it had written it about my life. Maybe it’s partially because this album came out when I was a teenager figuring a lot of things out, but the songs hold up for me now too. So, thanks for that!!

It’s crazy to think that the record label didn’t think sounds good feels good didn’t do well…it’s my favorite album still and I think it’s one that resonates a lot with the fans still.
Rock in Rio was definitely my highlight of 2017. Absolutely iconic concert & that guitar battle will for sure live on forever in my mind!!

sounds good feels good means so much to me and it makes me a bit sad they don’t see it as successful just because none of the singles went viral. it influenced and helped so many people the lyrics were deep and relatable. sounds good feels good era was a magical time for me and i will always love this album so so much and i’m sure a lot of people feel this way. i hope they know that and it means something to them.

I have to admit that as a hardcore fan at the time, the hiatus really affected me. The break was kind of a blessing in disguise because I realized how badly being a "groupie" affected my life: it was at a point where it was unhealthy.
So thank you for taking care of yourselves! And myself at the same time, I guess.
PS: It's really interesting to hear what your thought process was during the hiatus.

- Ash dice que el 2017 fue el año en el que se enfocaron en la escritura del próximo álbum. Se sentían frustrados en cuanto al estilo de la música y escritura que estaban creando.
- Ash dice que no entendía como personas podían escribir con una gran consistencia música pop, que era una cosa barbara que hubiera personas que tuvieran más y más consistencia con su escritura.
- Ash cree que cuando escribían entre ellos era como "Como puedo aprender más sobre la música pop, como me puedo involucrar en ella", también dice que al estar con grandes escritores que admiran lo hizo pensar mucho en cómo hacer para escribir como ellos, como lograr eso, ya que el pop punk les pegó en el último álbum (SGFG).
- Sabían que SGFG había sido un éxito, pero que no tuvieron ningún éxito masivo con los singles, sintiéndose frustrados, por lo que en 2017 se pusieron a pensar en que podían hacer diferente, en vez de estar con los mismos loops una y otra vez.
- Se cuestionaron muchas veces su música, como volver a crear a la banda con un nuevo sonido, como poder continuar y crecer un poco más.
- Luke dice que sí, el 2017 se basó mucho en aprender a escribir música más pop y más después del tour que hubo que no fue tan largo (Summer Tour).
- Aunque el Summer tour del 2017 no fue tan largo, dicen que tuvieron magníficos shows en todo el mundo y que pudieron acudir a grandes festivales.
- Luke dice que la banda internamente sabía que necesitaban cambiar el estilo musical, que tuvieron que pasar por muchos géneros y a partir de muchas influencias para llegar a ello.
- El propósito de la banda (cuando iniciaron) era ser una banda para las personas, de tener a la mayor cantidad de personas como oyentes, pero también el crecer en su nivel de escritura.
- Los chicos dicen que era un problema el tratar de tenener sesiones para escribir con varias personas, pero muchas decían que no hacían eso, que ellos no hacen escritura pop punk o relacionado a ello, y que por más que ellos les dijeran que ahora no era pop punk sino pop rock.
- Querían escribir letras que fueran aceptadas por las personas, pero con distintas influencias.
- A partir de esas influencias buscaban encontrar un progreso gradual entre una banda punk rock a una banda pop, un ejemplo de banda es Blondie.
- Ash dice que el 2017 también se trató de encontrar como lograr eso, como crear más longevidad, siendo fieles a sus raíces, pero escribiendo con una mejor calidad las canciones.
- Mike dice que en el 2017 fue más ellos 4 tratando de descifrar que hacer por su cuenta propia, ya que en ese punto mucha gente estaba dando un paso hacia atrás con el proyecto de los chicos.
- Mike también dice que se enfocaron en eso, en como escribir mejor, como tocar mejor y que esperaban que lo demás se fuera dando, que quedara en donde tenía que quedar.
- Sintieron que fue un año aterrador, porque tenían que reinventar la banda, iniciar de nuevo y el sistema a su alrededor que según los apoyaba no lo encontraba bien y no los apoyaba (que muchas veces en los negocios de la industria musical hay personas que se van y que queda en ellos mismos el hacer a la banda asombrosa).
- Ash dice que por eso ellos tenían una actitud un poco vengativa, que hacía que ellos dijeran "necesitamos escribir un HIT, porque de otra forma estamos jodidxs", esa era su realidad en ese entonces, pues no tenían un HIT desde hace 4 años (era SLSP con Selftitled).
- Los chicos querían tener un gran éxito, pero con un camino verdadero.
- El 2017 fue un año tan grande en cuanto a su desarrollo artístico como banda, explorando visuales, referencias, música, además de disfrutar y socializar en su nueva vida en Los Ángeles.
- Mike dice que nunca habían tenido ni vivido esa parte personal de su vida hasta ese año. Nunca habian sentido tener (hasta ese momento) una comunidad musical y a otras personas parte de su vida.
- Escribieron tanto hasta que ya no podían más, intentaron escribir de todo, todo genero.
- Luke y Ashton hicieron un viaje a Suecia que los ayudó a que sus mentes explotaran de ideas. Aprendieron sobre melodías, el como que la melodía es diferente a la instrumentación, el track y la música, no sólo surgiendo en ti con algo que tu sientes o de la forma más fácil.
- Entendieron que ahora siempre puede surgir en ellos una melodía que es una gran pieza para la música que crean, que ya no deben de esperar en la oscuridad para que la inspiración llegue a ti, simplemente tu puedes escribir cada día algo a esperar a que estés inspirado.
- Ash dice que lo ha sido una gran herramienta para ellos y que desde que empezaron a utilizar ese método en la escritura no lo han dejado de hacer, que ha funcionado para la banda.
- 2017 también fue un año bueno para los chicos, ya que pudieron visitar muchos lugares que antes no pudieron, como Perú o Brasil.
- En Brasil se presentaron en el festival "Rock in Río", que fue algo espectacular tocar su música al lado de artistas tan grandes como Pet shop boys, Lady Gaga y Maroon 5.
- Brasil que es un país donde no se habla el inglés y que sólo los HITS (por parte de artistas anglosajones) son los que hacen que una gran multitud cante sus canciones en inglés, era algo complejo para los chicos, pues sólo tenían UN HIT que la audiencia conocía.
- Ash dice que ellos dieron toda su energía y pusieron todo de sí mismos para dar un buen show, terminando en crear gran impacto en la audiencia brasileña a partir de su presentación y dando el inicio de algo muy especial en el país.
- Luke y Michael dicen que el "Guitar battle" de "Castaway" fue épico, creando una recuerdo inigualable.
- Mike se quedó en Brasil unas dos semanas más después de "rock in Río", donde conoció muchos lugares geniales.
- Para la última parte del año, unas de las últimas canciones que escribieron fueron "Lie to me" y "Youngblood".
- Durante una sesión los acompañaban los escritores y compositores Ali Tamposi y Andrew Wyatt a quienes les enseñaron lo que ya tenían compuesto, ellos simplemente empezaron a sentir y a sumergirse en ello, disfrutandolo, a lo que Ash se dijo a si mismo "Buen trabajo Ash, lo lograste" y empezaron a escribir las canciones (terminandolas algo rápido).
- Los chicos ya tenían como compuestas unas dos melodias desde una sesión antes, donde una de ellas (tal cual se había creado en un inicio) terminó en el coro, juntando diferentes ideas del pasado y presente en la canción.
- Andrew les dijo que sí el tempo, que sí la guitarra hiciera un grooves (sensación rítmica expansiva o el "swing" creado por distintos instrumentos como, guitarra, batería, bajo, teclado, etc.) que fuera como una canción hip-hop sería algo muy cool.
- Luke dice que en ese entonces escuchaban mucho Depeche mode, Tears for fears Michael Jackson y a muchos grooves, que fue el período en el que buscaban entender cómo mantenerse fieles a lo que quieren, pero estar en un nuevo espacio (del lado pop).
- Llegaron a crear una colección de canciones escritas durante todo ese largo lapso de tiempo y por haber trabajado con diferentes personas.
- Estaban algo frustrados, fue un álbum muy difícil crear y juntar (Youngblood).
- También fue muy aterrador para la banda porque había sido un largo tiempo desde que lanzaban un álbum y porque a sello discográfico en Inglaterra no les gustaba "Youngblood" y no lo querían lanzar como un single, por lo que terminaron lanzando en primer lugar "Want you back".
- 2017 fue más que nada el salir de la trinchera, el cuestionarse que hacer y como hacerlo, que es un lugar muy aterrador para estar y más si te sientes abandonado por personas de tu equipo o que dieran un paso atrás, que te dijeran que a un álbum no le había ido bien y que tenían que arreglarlo rápidamente.
- El 2017 hizo que ellos tuvieran una resistencia mental en cuanto a los negocios en general, pero más que nada el darse cuenta que hay altas y bajas y que no se puede continuar siendo un artista que fluye libremente con personas que van y vienen, equipos que se crean y se desploman, que hay canciones a las que le va bien y a las que no.
- Aprendieron tanto en 2017 a quedarse y a seguir su intuición, a creer que ese es el camino aunque nadie te apoye.

SGFG may not have been super successful commercially but to the fans it was something very special, especially being a teenager then. There were some masterpieces that came out of that album that i often go back to like Jet Black Heart and Outer Space/Carry On. That album holds so many memories and nostalgia for SO many people.
