Zippos are great because my grandfather has been a smoker all his life and he claims that every cigarette he has ever smoked has been lit with that same zippo lighter. My father holds the same story, as do I. Zippos, if treated with care, dont break because there isn't anything to break, excep the hinge, but as long as you don't do tricks, that shouldn't break either. Me - Black ice zippo owner since 2003. Father - Chrome zippo owner since 1971. Grandfather - Brass zippo owner since 1947.
Whether you prefer Zippos, Butane or matches, I really have to say thank you buddy for uploading this vid which is actually one more very intresting piece of "how it's made". I use butane oder gas for my all day cigarettes, though, when it comes up to my cigars, there's nothing like a piece of cedar to light it up slowly. Just as Savvas90 mentioned below, it's taste, one likes this, the other that. Just for all who enjoy a good cigar and never did it: try a piece of cedar from your cigarbox.
Serious question: Is it weird or a waste to look for one of these to use as a fidget device? I prefer not to smoke and there’s something about the shape, sounds and hinged top part. Seems like ideal stuff to fiddle with (minus the 🔥).
I used to play with a Zippo all the time. There's a world of Zippo flipping and tricks. You can use a Zippo that's empty of fuel or one that is a butane version. The insert is required the feel of the action (for traditional and Zippo copies).
good point. I love my zippo - butane lighters are so fragile and they need to be refill every week too when you smoke ;) And I like that fuel smell too ;)
1701spacecadet both because my zippo runs outta fluid at random. If you dont have a bic or a book of matches in your house and car you aren't a true smoker
Zippo! In fact, I just a new one today (to replace a year old I lost) and had to use a screw driver to loosen the spring! Besides, a Zippo isn't disposable and wasting oil for plastic, etc. (Written for any SJW's reading). :)
@charmalia Yes i have also seen that video. Oh and i almost forgot make sure there is o fluid in your zippo (just take out the zippo of its case and let it dry on the balcony). Im not so sure if they will confiscate it or not but if you dont put it in your carry-on bag but into your suitcase, You should be just fine.
@ALAPINO I was just talking to my parents about. It is actually my fathers 1st cousin who married into it. But they say she doesn't talk to our fraternal family.
I think Modern Marvels shows the engraving part and also talks about the zippo's history. I can't say for sure since I only seen it once on t.v. awhile back.
In one of the first shots you see a zippo with the logo of a dutch soccer club: SC Heereveen. (the one in the top row with the blue/white stripes + the little hearts )
well you sound pretty educated on zippos now if this video is accurate and all zippos are made from brass could i simple take a wire brush wheel on a bench grinder over my zippo to make it into a brushed brass zippo or would you not recommend doing this at all?
How can I get all of that chrome off I just want to see the copper underneath I think it looks much better. Can I just sand it off? Lmk ASAP I just ordered a zippo but I want to take the chrome off when it gets here.
You could have ordered a brass finish model instead. Otherwise, light sanding with 250 - 400 grit. If you go too course you'll run the risk of taking base material off quickly. ScotchBrite on a wheel would likely work well, but that is a method I have not tried to remove chrome from a brass base before.
ALAPINO Awesome I’ll try sandpaper. I made an account on Marlboro rewards and put 30 codes in plus the free points they gave me I only had enough points to get the classic street chrome zippo, the brass one that I wanted costed much more points. Thanks for replying though I hope the sandpaper works.
@charmalia whatever you do dont put the zippo your or fluid gas in your carry on bag (the one that you take on the plane). Instead put your zippo in the suitcase that you check in so they wont confiscate it at the security check. Hope this cleared up some things.
Thank you for uploading this video. One of my favorite shows. I wonder why the narrator's voice is female. in this one. Do you mind if I link to this at Zippoboards.com?
Cotton? Zippo lighters are packed with Rayon fiber balls. I got the Black Crackle and the Air Force cases. I'm going to buy a torch insert to replace the regular one.
The "A" means that you have an "armor" Zippo. An armor Zippo has a case, wall thickness of .030" instead of the normal .020". The thicker walled Zippo gives the lighter a little more weight. I think it feels more substantial as you handle it. Also, the thicker case makes the opening and closing sound of the Zippo about an octave lower than the standard Zippo.
Yes, but what you're referring to is the letter-month designation that is located off to the left side. If the Zippo has an A inside of a small shield with a little flame directly above, in the middle, right under the logo ZIPPO, it's an Armor Zippo.
look at the bottom and see where it was made and if it says zippo and also if the slide piece on the side will sat best results use zippo flints and fuel
has anyone noticed the decline in quality zippos have today? I think 2009 was the last year of quality zippos anything after seems they got lazy with the lids being flush. also I've seen alot of ruff edges on the lids. getting sloppy zippo..... getting sloppy.
It's a pain, but not impossible, to find new old stock. Sadly, I think it's a sign of the times that Zippo is on the decline. I think it won't be long until Zippo becomes a relic or moves to a non-domestic manufacture.

I enjoyed watching this video because I am a zippo supplier. What I dont like about zippo company is that they get to keep almost 50% of the profit plus taxes. Plus suppliers and small businesses always have to pay them in cash. This way they can alter their taxes and total yearly sales. Suppliers like me make 15% profit. In other companies, its the opposite. The companies make around 15 to 30% profit whereas suppliers make around 40 to 60% profit.
Zippo lighters are graded in the bottom. The higher grade means better materials, more brass, and better chrome finish as well as art work. the Chinese use zinc and who knows what material the basic case was made of. probably cheap aluminum or thin steel. the real problem is the damn lighter Fluid gets on your skin if you over fill it.
i have smoked pot for a long time and a bout a year ago i started to get this powding felling in my head ends up im alergic to butane now maches only and i havent had that felling seence O.o

My dad's Zippo has it too, he searched for the answer too and find out it was 2000 euro's worth. Maybe yours is also much worth?
The "A" means that you have an "armor" Zippo. An armor Zippo has a case, wall thickness of .030" instead of the normal .020". The thicker walled Zippo gives the lighter a little more weight.
