Oddworld Lore: Chroniclers

- The Chroniclers are an industrial race that serve as the accounts and lawyers of the Magog Cartel. They're one of the most interesting races of Oddworld that hasn't been seen in an Oddworld game yet and the history of their design is quite fascinating!
With Molluck The Glukkon returning in Oddworld: Soulstorm and, potentially, being put on trial by the Queen Glukkon, Lady Margaret, an event that was supposed to happen in Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee and would've involved The Chroniclers, I wonder if they will also be making an appearance, finally, in Oddworld: Soulstorm.

I think there is another way to say it. To these species profit is the measure of all success in history. Every action they commit is about advancing their status via wealth. Rulers are the most ruthless money makers. Their wars tend to be done by and for financial reasons. So accountants would be their most prized historians.
Yeah, that's a great way to put it! I didn't know how to say it but that is a perfect explanation! :D
Exactly! The Glukkons remind me of Ferengi (Star Trek). And in their culture your accumulated wealth really is all that matters.
Earth wall street is canonically considered a place of worship in Ferengi culture. It's one of the noteworthy places to visit in the universe.
In one episode a Ferengi learns that he is going to die soon and his main concern is to increase his worth as much as possible before death. So he auctions off pieces of his body. Which seems to be a common end of life practice for Ferengi the way they talk about it. Because it increases your net worth and pieces of a rich merchant are considered status symbols and or lucky charms.
Because well: Wealth is the only thing considered noteworthy at all.
So i wouldn't be surprised if the most important part in their history is effectively an high score board.
And after seeing the video on Lulu the Glukkon i think the same about Glukkons
It would definitely be an interesting plot development for them to explore in a future property. The whole "profit is our culture" thing, since cleaning out their bank account to them would be like cultural war. I could definitely see it going in that direction and making people rethink the definition of the struggle within these games. Like, on the surface it's "industry VS nature", but if you define the magog society as "money = culture", or "accountant = historian", it starts looking more like a culture war and the native tribes trying to wipe out a fellow nation. Granted, the magog's the society that started it, but it could lead to some pretty interesting plot developments later on down the road if played right.
This video reminds me about how many creatures live in Oddworld Universe. Each creature is so unique and every one of them seem to have their own role in this world, like Vikkers always associate with medicine and surgery, Glukkons with corporation, even if you dont know anything about Chroniclers, they look like someone really high in the whole Oddworld Society Pyramid, like they are someone really important for Magog Cartel. Thats so impressive just how outlook of each character in this universe could tell us about who they are and what they mean to this world.
Yeah, I love how each one takes a specific place in Magog society!
Makes you wonder how the Glukkons, and other life forms of Oddworld, evolved to their positions. It would be really interesting to see some WAY past games before they all started to split off and how they got to the Oddworld hierarchy that we see today.
@@newguy3588 That would be interesting! The history of Oddworld is quite fascinating, even if so much of it is unknown. :)
"An interrogation droid cant commit enough torture to be classified as a wife" you sir have earned a subscription and the notification bell activated 😂
The Chroniclers have always been, to me, one of the most interesting races of Oddworld ever since I first read about them when I was really young! I really hope they finally get to appear in a game with Oddworld: Soulstorm! :)
Even if they wont appear in Soulstorm, one thing is for sure : its going to be more and more interesting time for Oddworld Universe :)
Chroniclers with crystal balls and crystalline gems on their heads must store information in crystals -- or receive ancient instructions from ancestors.
I do my best to not comment before I fully watch a video, but I wanted to say that I really like your content. You really re-ignite my love for Oddworld.
Thank you very much! :D I'm very glad you like it! :) It's nice to know it helps people like Oddworld, I guess I'm doing something right! xD
I love amount of effort you put into these
Thank you so much! :D It can be. xD I rendered that beginning animation about three or four times after making adjustments each time and still aren't entirely happy with the final result. xD
@@pupbenny It's you who does that ? Bravo !
I love the staff Abacus. I just picture a Chronicler coming into the room, being told what the problem was and being asked to help, and he just holds the staff up with one hand and moving the The bits around and doing the accounting while taking. Also, judging by their position and oddly sage like look, I could see them being a mix of accountant/holy man. After all, in a civilization where money is god, the ones who manage the money are the priests.
I love the obscure-ish lore videos the most!
Also I would love a Lady Margaret trial in Soulstorm. That drawing of it you always show looks so Oddworld. I hope Lorne feels comfortable really expanding the scope of the universe in Soulstorm.
You know what’s really amazing is how this fits in-universe. Glukkons and Chroniclers, as they’re related, are both presumably octopus-like creatures. This would make it much more biologically plausible that the Chroniclers could quickly evolve to grow arms for desk work. It shows the amount of thought OH put into the lore.
The animated chronicler portrait looks like the stellaris portraits. Very well done, and great video as always!
Yeah you're right! xD And thank you very much! :)
"He's a fan of jammy dodgers" 😂👍
I cant wait to see the cut content in action!! In soulstorm said will see it!! Molluck is a piece of solid confirmation!! I cant wait to see lady margaret, sam, and others creatures of oddworld!! 😍👍
What if all Glukkon historical records are just ledgers and receipts? It'd be very on brand.
😂the giga chad rant LOL Can't wait to have my mind blown from SoulStorm!
We need a video about Skillya the Slig Queen and Sam as well I've found it very interesting about the ladles of Oddworld.
Yes good idea! Now that you've reminded me I actually really want to do one about Skillya now.... I was going to a few months ago but didn't get around to it. xD
Possible Spoilers Below:
Unfortunately, not in Soulstorm, but Abe mentions that their next stop is in Nolybab, the City of Glukkons. So perhaps the Chroniclers will appear in the next game.
Given the news outlets KNOW that Mullock is hiding in the Yaymans, they’ll probably find and capture him, so the trial might still happen.
Think about how Al Capone was arrested for tax evasion. While a chronicler would probably not have a lot of direct power, by finding crimes as well as exploits in the system they would have a lot of background control. This is an important theme in the Oddworld franchise.
I know this is an old video, but, considering the difference between the Accountant Chronicler and the Barrister Chronicler, what if the Barristers are supposed to be Lady Margret’s lawyers? She is indeed the head of the Magog Cartel itself, and has a regal status, it would make sense for the Barristers to be Margret’s, and the Accountants to be for her sons’. In real court cases, Molluck would have needed a lawyer to help him defend his case, while his mother had her own. This is a great video though! It would be amazing to see them in an Oddworld game!
I Really Don't Know Who The Chroniclers Are But Thanks For Showing About Them Pupbenny
Thank you very much, you are very welcome! :D
Man, those Disney lawyers are some scary mothers.....and I think that ring could be taken from Gandalf's fire ring he would wear, mentioned in the book and not the recent movie, that would make him more imposing to others.
Nice, glad you covered these cut concept characters
I've always seen that image with him in it didn't know who it was but it was in a soulstorm format and i thought it was a new glukkon
This is a great video you know a lot about oddworld keep up the good work my man
Thank you so much, I appreciate that! :)
You are welcome
As a misician and network engineer having 4 arms would be incredible useful. Get on it, Darwin! Oh, wait. We dont evolve anymore because we kill off or cut off any differences.
They are also Highly bribable. Glukkon A is being sued By Glukkon B, Glukkon A then bribes The Chronicler defender of Glukkon B, to throw the Trial in his Favor. There for in order to prove the innocence, Glukkon B needs to Pay his Chronicler, to not throw the trial, But also Bribe the Prossicutor Chronicler for Glukkon A to loose his trial. Forcing Glukkon A to rebribe. This is of course in addition to Bribing the Judge, to rule in your favor. Loooots of Moolah!
9:30 wow that will cool to see
Damn didn't even know this
what? damn he's wearing combat boots with red laces?
Apparently so. XD
Nice topic and research, man! 👏🏼
Thank you! :)
If you look at the shadow of the Chronicler in the painting, you can see there’s a tiny sliver of light separating the legs, meaning there’s two legs, not one
I was the one who asked the Question back in 2014 😁 I did always wonder if Chroniclers were related to Interns as the face always looked slightly similar to me and the fact they are both very tall and thin. Besides the fact of them having Vykker like arms 😆
Yeah true, I forgot to mention the similarity to Interns! Thank you for asking the question by the way! :) I really love it when people try to find out stuff like this. :) And I'm really impressed you got an answer! xD
Wow this video inadvertently uncovered some kind of possible archetypal history behind the Chad meme
At this point the oddworld planet looks like it might have more sapient species than non.
Bro I have never seen nor heard of a Jammy Dodger but I want one so bad now. They look hella good.
What have we learned?
Oddworld has a lot of Octopi.
XD
This are is good, I hope u make more.
The Chroniclers with their abacus kinda remind me of Islamic empires during the golden age of Islam, when math was being advanced and used to great effect in a major trading hub of the world. Really fits in with the idea of the Glukkons having previously been an inventive race before the great alchemy disaster.
10:18 really took "soulstorm is gonna be dark" at face value, eh?
Yup! xD
2:00 you mean Dr. Ball right?
Ok, I ship it!
YES! Dr. Ball! XD :D
I wish I had four arms but a man can dream.
xD
Better luck next game. It would make sence that all the focus of control would be near the queen of the gluckons, via abe's mother, control all in one area, no loose ends, it would be were the court would be. So next game we are headed to abe's mother, so bog big big chance.:)
Hey man I bet if they add this character they will probably design him with that color scheme 🤣 it fit so well
Lol abe sneaking in the background at 941
Lol I'm glad someone noticed that! xD
If he has a jammy dodger round his neck then obviously he is holding a Jaffa Cake.......
Very nice video !
Thank you very much Molluck1! :D
2:00 I still ship the Chad Chronicler with Dr.Ball
They kinda look like theyre related to Vykkers they got similiar upper body but with diffrent proportions and theyr head has similiar shape
Thanks for this vidéo !
You are very welcome! :D
@@pupbenny Thanks
Nice video
Thank you very much! :)
@@pupbenny you are welcome
I’ve never heard of these
I'm glad that people find new stuff about it! :D
They should have one leg if they were ever in a future game
This video was good
Why would anybody dislike this video
I like that the pictures move now. Really helps to make these characters feel alive and like they're an actual part of the universe even though they haven't appeared in any games
Omg was eating Jammie Dodgers just as got to that scene.
LOL for real!? :D
Yush favourite biscuit since forever.
Cool
There are zero instances of the chroniclers having 1 leg, in the shadow there is gap between the legs, just because there is a skirt you assume the leg split is gone?, the shoe outlines are on different layers and you can see the heel come on man
The ending of this video is so sad. I can't believe there were no real new creatures in soulstorm, no chronicler, no shrink, no margaret, no skilya, etc and they even cut out most of the old ones. What a let down.
1:58 you are correct my dude. It IS he wife, the Chronicler is asexual and that robot is used for CBT
Fan of Jammie Dodgers got me 😂😂
It’s Johnny bravo
Why does having a ring mean he is married?
Scribes
Hello
Hello! :)
xbox gimped oddworld, ps2 would have given a better game, pc would have given the best game
I would've loved the Munch's Oddysee on the PS2.... such a shame it didn't happen.
That early sketch looks like the chad meme lmao. Definitely more intimidating
The the absolute chad
xD
