I knew you'd get it! Yes, I see inclusions in created stones regularly. They still very in quality and are still subject to damage from mishandling before they even get to you. I've noticed investment curing temperature before burnout might play a role in casting quality. If my shop is around 65°F or 18.3°C, I've had a tendency for the investment to break down giving me very rough surfaces on my castings. I'd need to do a lot of extra work to make them perfect or recast. If I stabilize my investment and water around 73°F or 22.8°C and let the investment cure at that temp, my castings tend to be much better. Easily showing the pixels from the Phrozen Sonic Mini 8k. Thanks again for your great videos!
Yes, my powder asks for water at 21C and in honesty I just keep it at room temperature, though in my home that's typically around 22, so it's fine. However, it's been around 30C here for a few days, so yes, the water temperature was much higher than usual. That might account for the flaws in this casting. I also think another 5 degrees on the metal may have helped as it does look a little sluggish 😁 Thank you VERY much for sharing your knowledge. It's really appreciated.
That is a handsome ring! Another source of distilled water is your AC unit. Just collect the water from it and you won't even have to filter it, you're good to go as soon as you collect it.
So VOG, As a goldsmith and metal artist for 45+ years, this is what my experience has informed me. You actually can quench corundum (rubies and sapphires - [yes, that is spelled correctly] - either natural or lab created stones as long as they don't have any inclusions, or or other major imperfections in the stone. Typically, I don't quench big gems just to be on the safe side. Little and inexpensive stones like the ones you are using I quench all the time. Here is a tip for removing the casting investment when you are done and the flask has cooled to the point where you can handle it: tap the side of the flask with a ball peen hammer. Do it lightly, and rotate the flask as you tap it. The vibration of the percussion impact of the hammer will eventually fracture the investment and it will fall out of the flask, and as long as you don't hit the flask with a lot of force, the hammer will not dent the flask.
Thanks for your rainwater tip and especially for the ingenious funnel. I usually pump excess water from the water butt outside my workshop to a drain but methinks storing a few gallons will be worthwhile for all manor of things. PC water cooling, electrolysis etc although would still need to be distilled. As well as collecting particles on the way down rain also collects gasses apparently hence acid rain.
If you live in a heavily industrialised area with intense traffic, etc, then falling rain will pick up crap along the way. It's a shame, but there it is. It's argued that there's some pollutants in the rain even before it falls. But I suppose you have to ask, which is chemically cleaner... tap water or filtered rainwater? My guess is rainwater. It might not be as perfect as de-ionised water, but it's free and works well enough for my needs 😁😁😁
We all benefit from a big long screw. I filter my rain water too but only use paint filters. I like the idea of a paint filter inside a coffee filter 👍
@@vogman It's not for casting! I'm not as rich as you VOG😜 I find that over time, the crud from my water butt's (notice I said butt's? It's fantastic! I definitely need to get into casting. There would be so much relics and artifacts to make a replica of from games and movies, not to mention really high quality props for boardgames I designed and want to become real. My brother-in-law wanted to get into small jewelry making already.
Amazing casting as always 👏 . Thanks for tip on getting distilled water. Can you perhaps give us some guidance on vacuum pump maintenance? I believe you can run the vac pump oil through a filter to remove the water/contaminants, instead of replacing it constantly.
I was wondering if you could get more light behind the gems? It would make them glow a bit more. Like some diamond rings have settings that hold the diamond up to allow light in from behind.
I've always wondered why people quench their casts. I've only known one person who did metal casting but they did bronze casting for statues and stuff. They didn't vacuum cast because the equipment for that at that scale is honestly absurd and you might as well aerospace components at that point. But his whole thing was essentially he had a big oven that all the casting molds would go into, and warm the molds up, and then after the burnout was done he would hold them around that temperature and cast into them well they were still warm. And then close the oven it would get back up to whatever temperature it was at before and then shut off and slowly cool down over the course of a couple days. His logic for this was that It reduced the stress in the metal like normalizing or anealing. But his casts seemed to have a very high success rate.
Looks great! You've inspired me to make my own bake off oven and vacuum casting machine. Running a Photon Ultra making jewelry. I'd love to see more gems casted in place as there's not too much info on on this. Especially yellowing of white diamonds. Would be awesome to see a large gem casted into the center of a ring. Thanks for all the great content!

Hi Christian. Personally I just use laundry detergent and a spoonful of citric acid. This seems to work great, removing oxidisation and plaster. I also have a smaller plastic container in which I keep IPA. When I 3D print, I'll float this smaller container on top of the water content. It still vibrates the print and gets it spotlessly clean, but it doesn't mix the IPA and the water. It's just a quick time saver 😁
@@vogman Thanks, Geoff. Top answer, top bloke. I will be using it to clean off polishing compound residue.
