From hips to under bust it was leather "hoops" that overlapped like lorica segmentata and that was attached to a bra made of the same leather. I had to wear a tube top under the bottom part to keep from getting armor pinch. It was made from leather I think was called blacksmith's leather; a thick, fairly stiff, black, oil tanned leather. It was solid enough to take a punch. My boyfriend at the time was a professional leather worker and made it for me. As corsets go, it was really easy to move in because I could bend in it. The segments were held together with elastic and buckled closed in the back. Each segment was made from multiple pieces so they could be fitted to me.
I prefer your takes on boob armor over other YTers that do the same thing (mainly the women ones) because you do it with a sense of humor and far less preachy or pedantic about it while also giving good info on the subject. You also provide counterpoints to those strictly against any sexualization in armor by providing historical evidence of our ancestors doing just that.
Example I’ve ever seen is Samus’ power suit, the angular chest design really adds to the defense and would let weapons slide off of it, even though it’s not medieval armor
Shad, you need the wasp waist so that the weight of the armor doesn’t rest against your shoulders. Also, blunt force transfer into the stomach is less harmful than in the chest cus the blunt force would just go into your stomach then lower spine instead of your heart, lung, rib fracture which could cause internal bleeding
I appreciate the comment, but I do think you're focussing on the wrong thing, because if so I guess no one wore chainmail then, lots of blunt force gets through that. My point is there are plenty of armor types that offer even less protection than boob armor but people still wore them.
@@shadiversity As for the armors in this video goes, I like the practical ones at 16:43, 18:59, 19:42 - 19:46, and 22:56, the first two in particular. What about you?
First of all, people wore stuff over chain mail all the time, also, when chainmail was the bleeding edge armor, shields were allot larger and more prevalent in the knightly classes and the main point is that the funnel in the stomach portion of plate armor serves a purpose, it allows the weight of armor to be born on the hips instead of the back whereas the cups don’t really serve an purpose and funnel stuff into a more vital area. You straight up ignored my first point. It is like you are so dead set on late medieval tit armor that being deliberately obtuse.
@@shadiversity I think people need to distinguish between leaders and the rank and file. Leaders had the money for armor, but at the same time their role was not to fight, it was to inspire allies and promote negotiation in enemies. It's a common myth in media that leaders had armor and therefore fought. I think many could fight, but their job was not to fight and get killed, it was to be present to inspire people. So some element of psychology plays a role in what they wore. It makes sense to me that a female leader would go more for the "defend me" approach to inspiration, and a "talk to me" approach for the enemy, both of which are not hindered by boob armor.
I just finished your book. Great job by they way, and it's really easy to see how much you wanted to make it realistic while also having the fantasy elements. It's not hard to have realism in fantasy, it just takes a little work.
Next time you do one of these shad and the lads, Id like you to cover Repanse De Lyonese from Warhammer fantasy. That lady is a truly well thought out female knightly warrior, with well designed armour, lore, weapons and even haircut!
The second to last one gets a ton of points for actually wearing a helmet. It only really loses points for the boob window, but even that's kind of diminished by how it's clearly not a full armour anyway. I don't think she has heels, but it's hard to tell. It also looks good.
I love watching Tyrath's face while the other two are going with an in depth discussion about practical armour designs. He's just looking around like 'when boobs?'
Another part of functionality for female armor is how much the jiggly bits get in the way. Boobs just move around alot in athlwetic situation which you want to reduce. There is a reason why sports bras exist or woman bind their breasts before more extensive physical activity. Kinda felt that part fell under the table.
Yeah it must hurt like hell to turn sharply and have your metal cup jab into your parts, particularly when many of the examples shown had a pointy part. Ideally you would want a big metal dome over the chest, with a gap so that your not touching it with any part. And under it, a wrap to hold everything in place. Of course, your breastplate could look like actual breasts if you wanted, much like how codpieces sometimes looked like the item they protected.
The scale-kini at the end is done on purpose because every scale hitting sunlight at the right angle could blind the opponent and if by some miracle she's surviving winter or other snow dominated locales the armor would serve as a secondary snow blindness opportunity.
I get your channel focuses on medieval/ fantastical medieval armor & weapons, but would you consider reviewing gear from say futuristic/ sci fi/ tech based settings? I have an interest in equipment such as armor & weapons from series like Tower of Fantasy, Aether Gazer, Punishing Grey Raven, Honkai Impact, Doom, War Hammer 40k, Metal Gear Revengeance, Star Wars, Phantasy Star, ect...& feel it's a setting that has yet to be critiqued in greater detail. Great job as always guys.
I really loved the second to last one. Looked so functional and considering the size of her chest, those armor pieces could well be an idea to keep them in check using 2 shield-bosses (or what were the things called? darn foreign languages)
I’m working on a Cosplay for my Forest Gnome Cleric from DnD, I just got wonderful encouragement for a kirtle under my breastplate and belt of dwarven kind. Exciting
Always good to see another video from you. I am not sure, but I think the armor at 23:56 is actually more functional than it looks: the pauldron might move separately from the spike. If that is the case, then she can raise her right arm, although the other problems her armor has are still pretty severe. Keep up the good work!
I think something not often brought up is that in a fantasy world, the armor may need to be worn at all times while traveling. That means the person is at risk for overheating. As a result, some changes in armor design would be needed. I think boob armor with skin showing on the top part could be explained by a detachable piece that can be snapped on quickly during an emergency. The rest of the time, it would be off to promote airflow. Bikini armor would still be ridiculous, but some skin showing through steel plate can make sense in a fantasy setting. Especially if armor can quickly snap over those exposed bits during an emergency. A 100% chance of heatstroke can be more dangerous than the possibility of a random monster attack.
10:17 there is plate on the thigh towards the inside where the artery is. it isn't thick and tucked into the greaves, but there is something there if you look close at the area any guy should be looking closely at.
I think that the research done here is invaluable for creating fantasy settings where you can show what the current state of that part of the world is right now. I think that it would be a great opportunity for our three sages to come together to combine wisdom in order to create the perfect boob armor for different settings, like in tournaments, travel and in rough war.
I quite enjoyed this stream and your response to my superchat; I have sinced ordered the Dark Star Cuirass so I may review some genuine, functional "boob plate"! Good choice of upload dates, too! Happy Feast Day of St. Joan of Arc!
This story about opening gambeson mid-fight reminded me similar story about pirate (either Anne Bonny either Mary Read) who did the same thing to win a swordfight. At least, this is what some books say, so we pretty much have historical example. :D
Depends on what kinda fight that example entails. Realistically, the most I see that doing is having the guy mistake that as a weird display of surrender or nonsense, MAYBE saving them from a killing blow as a last resort to take advantage of guy’s instinct to not hurt oft more vulnerable women/children, and then the fight would just continue or she would have to surrender/escape. But if it was to the death there’s little chance someone is going to waver to that with their life on the line and adrenaline pumping.
8:13 i absolutely love this picture. i love how it uses a sort of layered profile to her by using her armor as a sort positioning tool. the gauntlets represent where her hands are located, the shoulder armor and elbow armor pieces are kind of like the more connected joints, and then her garments just connect the dots and fill out the rest of her figure. it is an awesome fix idea for someone who has trouble with drawing positions and it is absolutely beautiful...
A noble endeavour, brave gentlemen! I would have liked to have seen more examples of chainmail armor, ancient Greek or Roman style armor, and boiled leather. Perhaps there could be a follow up video one day? :)
Clearly the fighters at 11:05, 18:00, 19:10, 21:20, 23:55, 25:45, 28:20 are the superior warriors. Taunting their hapless victims with the knowledge that these incredible death dealing machines do not even need armor to defeat their enemies.
Funny thing that I was thinking about a lot of Greeks and Romans wear basically no armor to battle or they went entirely nude so sometimes I'm glad that these characters are at least wearing armor...
That's not quite the complete picture- both of those armies fought in shieldwall formations, behind full-body-covering shields. They also fairly widely wore upper body armour and their helmets are iconic. If you want people who fought basically nude, you're looking for celts and african tribes, who also used quite large shields.
I've been trying armor degradation, via combat, in a recent dnd campaign. I now have a halfling using a full adult orcs armor plate as an archers 🏹 post, having the group cleric, as he somehow rolled higher strength than the paladin, push them around in a wheelbarrow they stole... I really hope they don't read this and know who it is, but I intend to have the original owner of said wheelbarrow seek them out for the reason of stealing the wheelbarrow, that has a hidden stash of illegal almonds, a high commodity in wood elf society, as the current Duke has banned them, and products with it, on his lands, due to his severe allergy to them. Man, I had to get this out, I've been trying not to telly players that they're running around with a literal smuggling bin. This will give a certain captain who wears a dress of blades, and this is where I want some criticism, armor-wise: she currently has armored leggings, which is more to protect her legs from her own blades, and it's hidden under frilly ball gowns, gaining her the title, 'Red Wheel Rahshah,' and an iron corset. She often uses her dainty figure and high mannered etiquette to lower her targets guard. Opting for added gauntlets and a helm when in larger scale battles. She has more, but it's her fighting style and armor, I think, need some educated feedback.
Outside of shadiversity boob armor studies I trust Jill Beanup who says about underdressed warrior women 'just stab me already' because the more naked they are the more vulnerable.
I just realized why I haven't been receiving your notifications, it says that it's not allowed for content made for kids? Teh Fuh? I've been thinking that these were sporadic, but it's just not allowed anymore, "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!"
Actual book armour with the valley in the middle might actually be useful, especially if the opponent doesn't use a shield or you are left handed. You opponent gets his blade caught by the boots, you rotate around him and hit him.
With the point about psychological factors in going nude - particularly about encouraging your own comrades - I can understand it within the context of my own struggles with mental health. There's been times when I've dealt with dangerous thoughts during depressive episodes, and sex has worked well as a distraction, an emergency "boost" to my mood (if not enough to make me happy, then at least to make me relaxed), *and particularly as something to look forward to.* I can't go and end my own life when I've made a commitment to give my partners a form of thanks for their constant support, and especially when it can feel like a reward for persevering. So I can totally see how the same reasoning could be applied to not letting someone else end your life - thus, a visible reminder of that reward is a good way to raise morale. In fact, I can take it a step further...my partners are both "headmates" - other minds sharing my body. (I don't have DID, but it's a similar phenomena, if that helps explain) So if I die, then they do too. So caring about them and wanting them to be able to keep living is a reason for me to live - the closer I am with them, the better - and intimacy works as a good form of bonding. We perhaps feel closest when intimate with each-other, so similarities to that may enhance the feeling of closeness in-the-moment, and sex appeal is of course relevant there. Similarly, for someone in a battle...if they die, their army will be weaker, and their comrades will be more likely to die - thus, they have an emotional incentive to live, proportionate to how much they care about their comrades, and sex appeal can be a "reminder" of whatever feelings they may have towards each-other.
3:50 The "funneling strikes into a focal point" is the applying the pythagore theorem on a non rectangle triangle of armor theory. It's a valid hypothesis on many tanks because many shot traps direct the hits toward weak spots bot on breast armor, i don't think i've ever seen that.
Honestly my favorite armor sets were practical and elegant. 1:56 - 👍 5:16 - 👍 14:51 - add armor around upper chest, replace a one of the swords with a shield, and fix the high heels. 16:44 - second favorite (👍) 19:03 - third favorite (👍)(maybe tied for second) 19:44 - ⭐️favorite⭐️ (fix high heels as Shad suggested) 22:57 - 👍 25:22 - fourth favorite (👍)(more armor around upper inner chest and shorten loin cloth to knee height, more armor around hips and inner thighs, armor will remain flexible yet functional) 27:09 - fifth favorite (👍)(also amazing detail in the artwork; anyone else notice the blood on the sword?) Any that were not mentioned are great cosplay armor for other activities.

@@shadiversity boob armor toptier good:)
Hey Shad and Co did u know that there is fantasy art with lightly armored MALE fighters also ? Looking forward to that episode :) Keep it up
I'd be interested in seeing Shad review the various Saber designs from fate/stay night. I always thought it was both functional and fashionable.
I love it when Shad said "It's boobin time" and then boobed all over the place.
Truly, one of the moments of all time
lmao
I hate my sense of humor
The second to last one gets a ton of points for actually wearing a helmet. It only really loses points for the boob window, but even that's kind of diminished by how it's clearly not a full armour anyway. I don't think she has heels, but it's hard to tell. It also looks good.
I love watching Tyrath's face while the other two are going with an in depth discussion about practical armour designs.
He's just looking around like 'when boobs?'
🤣
Agreed
Thank you for your very... deep... and thorough... analysis. 🗿
Tyranth is truly focused! He realy analized all of these!
More reviews please! Love them and thanks!
Exciting
It was so refreshing for you to have women on your panel discussing women's armor.
;)
I approve of this scientific endeavor.
The magical medieval mamajammin mammary mail.
My favorite items in RPGs, table top or otherwise, are the ones that give you bonuses to armour without having a visible affect.
The scientific approach to this delicate topic should be encouraged in every way. As we see, our scholars here did quite a wide-range research!
1.6mil subs and 40k views in the first day.
Glad to see UA-cam being nice to you 👍
When you like a vid before watching. Science rocks!
Shaving head bald is effective way to cool body.
Shad needs that algo boost. I respect the hustle.
I'm here for science! I love these videos for real, though. ❤
Me, looking at my armor set I use in Monster Hunter:
it is...acceptable.
The armor at 16:43, 18:59, 19:42 - 19:46, and 22:56 are practical, the first two being the best design in my opinion.
You know, I'm something of a scientist myself.
A noble endeavour, brave gentlemen!
I would have liked to have seen more examples of chainmail armor, ancient Greek or Roman style armor, and boiled leather. Perhaps there could be a follow up video one day? :)
If only my science class back in school had been anything like this I might have been good at it.
Hey Shad, just to let you know, video + short to trigger notifications worked. Actually got the vid recommended on the same day it came out for once.
Clearly the fighters at 11:05, 18:00, 19:10, 21:20, 23:55, 25:45, 28:20 are the superior warriors. Taunting their hapless victims with the knowledge that these incredible death dealing machines do not even need armor to defeat their enemies.
is this the only reason i watch this channel? yes yes it its
Funny thing that I was thinking about a lot of Greeks and Romans wear basically no armor to battle or they went entirely nude
so sometimes I'm glad that these characters are at least wearing armor...
That's not quite the complete picture- both of those armies fought in shieldwall formations, behind full-body-covering shields. They also fairly widely wore upper body armour and their helmets are iconic. If you want people who fought basically nude, you're looking for celts and african tribes, who also used quite large shields.
@@AGrumpyPanda true true I usually look more into weapons than armor so if I don't know most of the facts about armor that's why but yeah
Saw the title and thought "A Shad and Jill Bearup crossover?!"
This is very educational
Bery instructive 👍you should also have analized wonder womans armor
I was unable to breathe during the entire length of this video 😂😂
I like this science project:)
“Many a man has broken their swords” 😂😂😂
Petition to get Jill Bearup on for one of these episodes.
The next step would be to find..."volunteers"
We all appreciate some nicely rounded science.
For science ofc sure
Quote of the day: "Is it boob time?"
Honestly my favorite armor sets were practical and elegant.
1:56 - 👍
5:16 - 👍
14:51 - add armor around upper chest, replace a one of the swords with a shield, and fix the high heels.
16:44 - second favorite (👍)
19:03 - third favorite (👍)(maybe tied for second)
19:44 - ⭐️favorite⭐️ (fix high heels as Shad suggested)
22:57 - 👍
25:22 - fourth favorite (👍)(more armor around upper inner chest and shorten loin cloth to knee height, more armor around hips and inner thighs, armor will remain flexible yet functional)
27:09 - fifth favorite (👍)(also amazing detail in the artwork; anyone else notice the blood on the sword?)
Any that were not mentioned are great cosplay armor for other activities.
FOR SCIENCE DUH!
Shad talking about what women wear again? I shouldn't have clicked but I wanted to see if he made a fool of himself again.
But... He's bringing up historial examples and bringing up actual facts and strengths and weaknesses... This is the Shad I enjoyed and watched for years. And- Oh I'm still subscribed! But then what the heck happened when he was uploading on that other channel and acting like an incel? Was it just a character? This is informative, and funny. This is what I thought we'd lost. I'm confused, but glad.
SCIENCE!!!!!!
Nate bro... your outfit looking on point again! 🤙🏼
Ah, yes, definitely for science. Definitely not because our primitive, ape brains built for pattern-recognition, as well as hormonal challenges influences our decisions when, especially, gazing at the thumbnail.
But still, good job on (mostly) playing it fairly straight.
"Two breaking points" is killing me 🤣
I'll always like Dragon Age: Inquisition for literally addressing unrealistic boob armor in a conversation between Iron Bull and Cassandra about her armor
Ah yes, exposing unrealistic boob armor, brought to you by the guy who fights fucking chest naked
This entire dialogue is a train wreck

I was lucky enough to catch the live stream on this one 😆
This is what I watch UA-cam for. Nothing will ever top this.
I would love to see you guys test the legitimacy of all armour on only one side and no armour on the other in combat. See if it is as effective as many claim it is for superior speed and mobility.
Would have liked to see you collaborate with Jill Bearup on this. It'd be fun to see the two of you nerd out together.
Enough analysing! Its time to create one!
