We caught each others' eyes and were instant friends, playing by jumping up and down etc. in unison while keeping each others' gaze. Something lit up in that monkey's spirit, he came more alive for a while, out of his zombie state. Then after a minute or so my parents wanted to move on. When I was reluctantly dragged away by them, the lemur switched instantly to abject angry hate. TRAITOR! was his unspoken accusation, and he knew I knew. As in "why wake me up just to leave me in this mind and spirit numbing half-life!". I didn't hear any of that as words - just my best translation now of my stark impression at the time. I felt wretched, hurt, ashamed and was also angry with my parents. I left with deep grief for my poor friend.

The problem is many animals carry brain parasites that we have not yet fully understood and therefore those children may be contracting foreign organisms that will stay with them their entire life and dramatically affect their quality of life. Even cats carry brain parasites. That's a high risk to expose your children to.
