  • Swineshead & Heckington Stations, & Boston Docks swing bridge, Lincolnshire.
    Friday 25th February 2011.
    Loco's/DMU featured: Class 03 No. D2112, Class 47 No. 47739 "Robin of Templecombe" & Class 158 No. 158813.
Another trip to the Sleaford to Boston line for the Colas Rail steel flow, starting off at Swineshead Station, we first see 158813 pass through eastbound on a Nottingham to Skegness East Midlands Trains service. Shortly afterwards, 47739 passes through on 6Z56 Washwood Heath to Boston Docks empty steel wagons. Next, moving to the swing bridge at Boston Docks, we see D2112 over the water shunting loaded wagons around, and later crossing the swing bridge light engine to collect empties from the mainline sidings. D2112 then propels 5 empty wagons over the swing bridge, and then hauls 5 loaded wagons over, transferring them to the mainline sidings. Lastly, moving over to Heckington Station, 47739 passes through on 6Z57 Boston Docks to Washwood Heath loaded steel.

I live in Boston & these trains still run, the 158s (now in EMR colours) and the waggins, usually with a DBS red class 60 at the front. The shunter is now a blue class 8. I see them regularly because I don’t live too far away from the docks. Sadly the points connecting the sidings to the main track often fail & cause a lot of traffic issues as it did this week because it’s usually ‘school run’ time.

Good to see the old line in use! Shame about the closure of the octagonal box at the swingbridge though - had a beautiful frame in its day but got vandalised!

Saw the shunting today, 1440 to 1600, 60001 and 08375, last time before that was in 2004...

Is it still in service or has it been moved to a heritage railway

Semaphore signals, traditional crossing gates and an 03. This could almost have been shot in the '60s. If only the Duff was in BR green as well...

There isn't anymore, sadly. This was one of, if not, the last Class 03 still operating in commercial service. It has now left Boston Docks (as well as the BR green Class 08), and has been replaced by a Harry Needle Rail Class 08 & 09.

Great to see a past glimpse proper localised shunting on Britain's railways before everything becomes homogenised 😏 They still seem to do this in the USA check out Jawtooth's videos on You Tube

    8.28. that's a "poor off" on signal.

Surely at 15:17 that signal means stop?

It controls traffic towards the docks, the movement shown is leaving the docks, so it’s not applicable.
