- The founding member of The Supremes, Florence Ballard talks about signing the settlement(s) that allowed her to leave Motown and also names her lawyer.
This is only a few minutes of 8 hours of interviews of Florence Ballard by author Peter Benjaminson who has written a new book on Flo released in 2008 entitled "The Lost Supreme: The Life of Dreamgirl Florence Ballard" which is heavily based on the interviews he recorded with her in 1975 only a few months before her untimely passing.

I know Flo is in a place of good-- but how can one rest in peace when her babies that she left behind is struggling and the money THAT WOULD AND COULD BE A BIG HELP -- is owed to Flo and HER CHILDREN>>> ((estate))
Mary was there. She may have not given much since she didn't have much but In Flo's book, Flo said that Mary would always buy presents for the kids or whatever they needed. Mary also let Flo and her kids stay with her mother when she had no where to go. So Mary was there.
When you look at Marvin's story,the temptations,supremes and do many others...it just saddens me to see my ppl really get the first taste of fame and just be so driven to drugs,alcohol,heartbreak. All of them were so young and really were the first generation of commercially successful black artists...

To add, Mary asked Florence to come to Berry Gordy's party and folks never got the chance to see her since she was fired from the group. Flo hesitated but decided to go after Mary spoke with Berry's brother Fuller Gordy who also wanted to see Flo even though she was 7 months pregnant. Diana nor Berry didn't like the idea Mary brought Flo and that's when the crap started. This kind of tactic with Diana pulling on Flo's hair and never even talking to her after her dismissal, how would any of us feel if we were in Flo's shoes. Disrespect and again insulting tactics to this woman was uncalled for. May Florence Ballard RIP. Love you baby.
Don't forget that Diana had a hand in Florence's dismissal from the group. The group Florence started and named! Then Diana's boyfriend screwed Florence out of her earnings resulting in her raising her children on welfare while Diana sent hers to private boarding schools.................

As was often the case between Florence and Diana, their interaction at that party might have been a misunderstanding. Perhaps Diana meant to playfully tug at Florence's hair, but Florence did not perceive her actions that way. And it just went downhill from there.
Florence's instincts were right from the start. She should not have attended, especially if she had not communicated with Diana or Berry since her exit from the group.
Flo was invited to a party at Gordy house by Mary and Fuller!??? She wasn't invited by Gordy! Come on. The year before she was getting drunk and starting fights with both other Supremes and Gordy. Yet she went to a party uninvited by the host that she had a bad relationship with? Get real. Why didn't Mary and Flo have a party and invite her there? This was so wrong. And then to be suprised by poor treatment? She was displaying poor manners for years when she was in the group because they wouldn't let her sing lead. She was already told Diana was leaving the group. Why didn't she just shut up and sing? So sick of all this Flo shit. SHE WAS A DRUNK!

Flo was very pregnant and it is highly unlikely she would be trying to get herself in any fights (plus she seemed to be having a decent time talking to people AND she was at Berry's place - Flo would have been on her best behaviour).
If DIANA wanted the BEST for Flo, she would have ignored it and not said anything to Berry because she knew what Berry was like.

A dam shame that Flo was disrespected and mistreated when she was the one who invented the name The Supremes. She grew up with Mary and Diana and Berry Gordy is a straight up jackass for what he did to Flo's life.

Man, Berry Gordy just acted as if Diana was some kind of goddess who was the queen of all females. Florence and Mary could have had some solos... Diana had a small soft voice, Florence had the deep, rich, and strong but sweet voice, and Mary had a gentle and very sweet voice. Diana wasn't the only girl in the group. Am I right UA-cam?

BS read berry gordy book. When Diana went solo nobody bought tickets to her concert. Berry had to test hundred dollar bills in half and give it to people promising them that if they go to the concert they will get a whole hundred upon presenting the torn bill. U can buy a career. Anything shoved down the public's throat sells. Just like today it is the same damn five songs that keep getting rotated. Has nothing to do with talent . Have you ever heard of payola.

Diana then ran over to Berry, tattle-tale like, and Berry asked Florence to leave. (even though she was having a great time sitting and talking with Berry's brother Fuller..)

I NEVER said Flo should have been the MAIN LEAD singer of The Supremnes BUT she and Mary could SAAAANG and deserved at least one lead each on every album. Flo had a better voice and was more versatile than MANY that were out in her day and having hits. Flo could sing sweetly too to the point where she was making music reminiscent of Dionne Warwick's at times.
Flo had charisma too - watch The Supremes sing I FEEL FINE (Flo is just as charasmatic as Diana there).
OMG. I'm sorry but I have to disagree - I do think Flo made some bad decisions BUT other Motown acts have said Flo was fired unfairly.
Flo was fired because she was seen as a threat. Berry had no time for someone in the group who wanted to be a solo artist except Diana - that's why he got Cindy as he could control her and she would be a "good girl".
What I don't understand is why Berry had such hate for Flo =S - some have suspected Flo rejected him...
Yes I've heard that too but good on Florence Ballard she didn't have to seduce men to get where she was before BG and DR did her wrong. And Motown owe it to her daughters to help them too. Florence Ballard didn't get much of BG anyway disgraceful

You can't help but look at Florence when you watch them perform. She lit up the stage on her own. Yes, Mary and Diana are pretty, but Florence was the real beauty of the group. The best smile as well. I can see how she could have been taken as a threat. They should have given her something of her own to do THEN instead of kicking her out.

True. In every Supremes' performance featuring Flo, she captures and holds your attention. Yeah, you periodically glance at Diana for a moment, but then your gaze returns to Flo. That's the tragedy in all this. Flo possessed more innate talent and beauty than Diana; however, Diana's ambition and savvy in navigating the industry were unmatched. Aware of Flo's unique qualities, Diana and Berry did everything they could to stifle and break her down to prevent her from gaining recognition and opportunities.
Well, Flo's lawyer foolishly allowed her to sign away her royalties as part of her release from Motown. If the lawyer was looking out for her best interest than instead of getting the one time settlement money her daughters would still get royalty cheques today, each time they release another Supremes compilation or feature a song in an advert

I think the bigger problem was that Florence's lawyer stole the settlement Florence received from Motown. Florence very unwisely allowed the check to be given to her lawyer. After the settlement meeting, Florence and her husband got on a plane for Hawaii, leaving the check with the lawyer. When Florence returned, the lawyer had vanished.

I read this in Mary's book. Flo was hated by Diana and Berry period. For Diana who haven't talked to Flo since she was let go, this was a ploy Berry put her up to. Insulting! Mary cried because she brought Flo to that party and it backfired. I guess she thought that Flo would be greeted nicely by Diana and Berry but she was further insulted. No wonder she went through her mental ups and downs while being in the group.

I can't believe how rude this was. I don't think Florence would lie on tape about this when another Frmale artist said Diana did the same thing to her and Berry took Diana's.side. It seems like Diana just turned on her two best friends as soon as they became famous. She was invited into the group by them. Why would she go tell Berry and he jumped up to take her side. To him she was gold, but when she was offered a bigger and better Contract, she tossed him like a rag doll. She kept a connection for Child Support reasons.
The final interviews Flo have in her words go hand in hand what Mary has written and said over the years. As talented as Diane is it was the late Flo And Mary who gave Diane her start by recruiting her. Gordy’s ego, infatuation of Diane and disrespect for the other two women is legendary. Karma tho...she ended up dumping him. SMH.
They didn’t give Diana her start and they didn’t recruit Her. Paul Williams did.

@EdTube1989 Actually Rob Cohen, Motown's Hollywood guru, ruined Diana's acting career, but yes, with Gordy's blessings. Hollywood talent scouts had recognized a potential for Lucille Ball/Carol Burnett type comedy in Diana and wanted her for some zany, goofball type comedy movies. Cohen rudely rebuffed them, saying that it was beneath Diana's dignity. Oops. Big mistake there. I think Diana had a natural gift for comedy.

Yea it was Harvey who said Florence wouldn't be singing People. She was crushed and the whole Motown family was worried about it. In Mary's own words "How much more of the spotlight did Diane need?"
My fav Flo songs are too many to mention. Just hearing her singing her heart out was good enough for me. I enjoyed Mary too for it was a treat hearing them sing beside always Diana.
Berry created Motown, and we rejoice in that. But, he also threw A LOT of them under the bus. GREED. They suffered then and now because of their total committment to Motown and him, only to end up depressed, broke and dead. Kind of like working hard for someone and getting nothing in return. Sucks
@legedaryone Diane's Kennedy Center Award is a well deserved "political" reward as THE SUPREMES finally broke barriers in show business that many before only reached to!
The Billboard Award again, THE SUPREMES hold all those records on sales and popularity, hers alone are adequate but not stellar!

I didn't LOL - I don't even have the book. I have read some excerpts.
One was about how at the Copa when Flo found out PEOPLE had been given to Diana, she got really upset and belted out PEOPLE acapella (the whole thing) in her dressing room and held the last note for ages - hailing loud applause from those who were around the dressing rooms LOL

I didn't mean to sound harsh or anything but I guess its because I love me some Flo Ballard and from a kid I was heart broken when she was let go from the group. It would be years before I'd hear anything about her and then she died, just like that. I know its an old story but she's a part of music history and I really enjoy listening to her work with the Supremes and her solo album.

it reminds me of the way Curtis treated Effie in Dreamgirls, after Deena was pushed out front. Their relationship was very loving and affectionate until he saw Deena as his ticket to success. It reminds me of certain Freudian defense mechanisms, like projection, distortion, and especially, displacement.
Dreams girl is based on their story it only ms Ballard had a happy ending like Jennifer Hudson's character

@Tgarland84 I think it's because she spoke up for herself. A lot of the artist just fell by the wayside and struggled without saying a word. It wasn't their faught, it was his greed for money.
People tend to forget that Flo had charisma too. Flo had the vocal ability to adapt her voice to whatever genre she needed to sing. Berry wasn't interested in that. He was only interested in Diana. Flo should have had at least one song every two albums. That would not have taken away the star power or lead singer image of Diana. Berry wanted her to have everything and he made sure of it. Unfortunately that was done at Flo and Mary's expense.

This is sad. I feel very sorry for Flo and Mary however all of this is ancient history. Nothing can be done about it. All we can do is continue to enjoy and support The Supremes legacy which is the music.

First of all, Diana ain't talked to Flo since she was fired from the group and she lived across the street from Flo so she didn't come up to Flo and say Hi, or how have you been or anything but to pull on Flo's hair was unprofessional and stupid. Diana Ross did a lot of ugly things and Berry Gordy knew he had an ally with him which is why she became the STAR she is today. She nor Berry want to look back at all their unsavory tactics they did to push to stardom but you know, it all comes back to haunt your ass evntually.

Oh yes quite a few - which are posted on UA-cam. Type Flo and Mary's names into wikipedia (seperately of course) and both their pages have a good list of songs they sang lead on as Supremes (in fact, I created the list on Flo's page and uploaded that beautiful picture of her).

What’s a shame, is that Diana and Flo were mending things right before she died. Flo actually called Diana and they talked for a good minute. Flo was not able to handle her alcohol. She was a light weight according to Mary (and Diana). She was jealous and acting out. - on the flip side, I find it interesting that Diana herself had became a drunk during the late 90’s early 2000’s. If anyone doesn’t think Diana hasn’t received her karma, do think again. She truly got humbled during the late 90’s and early 2000’s… her husband had a baby with another woman. He then ends up dying on a ski trip. Diana’s brother in the 90’s was found murdered in a basement with his wife. That also had weight on Diana. She simply cracked. Diana is in a healthier state of mind these days and has faced her demons.

If Diana was 'sympathic' towards Flo, she wouldn't have treated Flo the way she did b4 she left the group. I think Ross felt guilty & tried 2 help Flo out with money after the fact. Flo had her demons but Ross' behavior was horrendous. There really is no excuse 2 treat somebody whom u had a relationship with as teenagers like crap after becoming famous. However, I don't think it's fair 2 blame Ross 4 some of the things that Flo did after she was kicked out of the group. BG, that's another story.

Berry fired Flo because he wanted to make Diana a star and he wanted to do it the easiest way possible - fire flo.
Flo was ONLY a problem because Berry was such an arse to her and because she was pissed off about the treatment she got and how the group was going. Flo still LOVED what she did but Berry threw her over the edge, in fact they pissed eachother off to the point where Flo knew it was over.
Both Berry and Flo are to blame. Berry treated many of his artists' terribly

Yea I seen a video where all Flo's girls were getting kicked out on the streets.I think they deserve royalty checks from their mother she made the whole group up in the first place.She was done so wrong you would figure all the money Diane has wich I look at her in a different way now you figure she would help them out.Theres no excuse.If it wasnt for Flos sister dating her boyfriend who was looking for a girl group she wouldn't even exist and Flo was the original singer anyway.That Poor woman just couldn't catch a break but was always willing to help others from what I heard.Shes not even on this earth no more and she still is done wrong I dont care if they are grown they her children deserve what their mother worked for I bet Diana's kids never wanted for nothing.Now Flos kids lost their mother you figure these woman would always make sure they were good they could have taken them as their own or givin them money to go to good schools just made sure they had a good education. This breaks my heart and its wrong how could you know this is going on with daughters of a person you worked with all them yrs and not feel or want to help.Even Motown they owe them their mothers Royalties her voice is on the songs people all over the world still listen to.I pray these girls get what's owed to them so they don't have to worry or struggle.

I think Diana is a great artist but I don't understand why she would go to Berry like that when she knew he didn't like Flo. Surely she could have thought "no I don't wanna cause any trouble, Flo is my girl"...
Wow, this is something else! This was a trip! The things that happened at Motown! I've been reading about Motown for some time now! I've been a singer, actor, composer, model, producer, etc myself. I just never made it big! Or got the opportunities that the Motown artists, and non- Motown artists got! I was inspired by mostly Motown. Although I've got inspiration from other singers on different record labels! Berry seemed to be able to make stars out of his music employees! But it seems like he wasn't such a nice boss to work under. I had visions of being at Motown! But Motown doesn't quite exist like it used to. I understand it's been sold, it something like that! Maybe it's best that I never got a that Motown label!

Diana looked more like Lady Day. Flo's face was longer and a bit more pointed. Plus, Diana was more of a jazz singer than Flo was.
Flo was a R&B/Soul singer (Buttered Popcorn, Hey Baby) who was more than capable of singing Pop like on one of her solo recordings EVERYTHING WONDERFUL -- also with training she could have even done opera or classical music

I can just see Motown's finest, at this party, holding their collective breath when Berry confronted Flo...No one said a thing, but if she had clocked him and then gone after Diane, all of Detroit would of heard the commotion. AzzedineAliaFan, This was how Diane was during her run in the Supremes which drove Flo out of her mind. Diane was selfish, greedy and wanted everything for herself and the hell with Flo and Mary. She is 76 years old today and she is still like that.
Yes, Diana and Flo made up before Flo died. To me it seems Flo almost had a sort of feeling something unfortunate was headed her way; they say people can sometimes feel the tragedy of their destiny. But anyway, shortly before Flo died, she called Diana and they had a nice, heartfelt, "woman-to-woman" (as Flo called it) conversation on the phone, discussing motherhood and life. According to Diana, the call came out left-field, but she enjoyed the talk... but the next thing she knew, Flo was gone.

Well actually Mary has a very powerful voice as well - she knows how to belt when she wants to (check my favourites for the video entitled One Night With You).
I agree with you though, even if they thought Flo's deeper sound was a bit too heavy they could have used her beautiful soprano
