I grew up skateboarding in San Diego. Here's my old secret skateboard ditch spots.
    1. Tightly Bowl (Skate Ditch in Chula Vista, CA behind Self Storage near Trousdale Ct)
    2. Pershing Skate Ditch San Diego, CA (Near Balboa Golf Course) Yes, take Pershing St Freeway exit and it's on right hand side over fence.
    3. Orange Ave (Chula Vista, CA) Skate Ditch. 9 foot deep ditch. Was featured in many skate videos from the 80s-90s.
    4. Manchester Ave Ditch (Del Mar, CA). Featured on front of Thrasher Magazine cover in late 90s. I witnessed the WSSP build from illegal build to finally being allowed to complete. I remember the guys that built it with their scary dogs there in the trailer. One skinny dude with the missing front tooth (forgot his name). Skated it many times after it was legit as I never felt cool around the wild dogs when people would bring beer to skate sections of it while they were completing it. Skate or Die.

I love the magic in finding random DIY spots, especially when I lived in Beacon, NY, it was full of abandoned factories made of stone, the skate community put in work at random and yet together we built a huge skatepark and even BMX riders joined and made some sick stuff! I, In fact, actually preffer rigging stuff up and using my imagination than going to a standard park.

Excellent points. A big part of the appeal of street skating is the creativity. Skating the stuff you aren't supposed to skate.

I love that you guys are doing the DIY thing. In my time we used wood and I built a ton of ramps and curbs. One time me and the guys REPRESENT Long Island Riverhead NY .Anyway I’m not sure who found it but it was a massive long building built to raise chickens. Hence the name. Chickens !
Well half of the place was full of crap and the other side was empty and did I mention that it was 1 , indoors ( NY RAINS AND SNOWS ALOT ) and 2 the slab was poured with some of the smoothest cement I’ve ever touched wheels to.
We put one or 2 small things in there at first and nobody bothered us. After skating that for a few months we added a quarter a hip with a box ,nice long pvc slide. It was a blast. For all I know it could still be there but I doubt it. Point is the DIY ETHOS has been around for a long long time. Me and my buddies were there at the start. It’s so rad making your own stuff that you sweated over. It’s awesome.
I can’t tell you how many things we built over the years. It was so much fun. I hope they you do a video on wood because it’s still an option. Love the videos bro.

Grew up with no skateparks near me but they recently built 2 near me so now I’m blessed. However I do have this one friend who is struggling to progress but he only skates the park. I keep trying to get him into the streets as that’s what made me the well rounded skater I am today.
Now that I’m older I do appreciate skate parks for providing a judgement free zone to safely skateboard in

  • @sk8rMike360

Currently I'm involved in the redesign of our local skatepark. Unfortunately the local authority decided to let a company what produces all kinds of outdoor structures, like trashcans and benches, design and build the park. This in combination with basically only listening to a couple of minors. Obviously the local authority is now planning to build the lamest prefab skatepark ever. I wonder how this will work out, maybe we will be better of with a DIY park...

    • @angusramsay6092
      @angusramsay6092 Рік тому

Yeh they did this in the village i grew up in. My guess is they are going for the cheapest option.
Mabey you need to tell them how it will be bad for them if they do this.
Tell them that if it is a metal prefab it will be very loud and may lead to noise complaints and will be very ugly.
Tell them that if it is a wood prefab it will take damage over time and will become unsafe (they may worry about lawsuits) and they will constantly be spending money to repair it.
Tell them that a concrete skatepark built by a reputable state park company will be quietest and most durable.

Your attitude towards DIY spots was one of the final kicks that motivated me to start building one near my house, about a year ago: A ledge made out of bricks, a manny pad and "curb ledge". The place was once a renown DIY spot but got abandoned & destroyed, so a bunch of people got excited about the "rebirth" of it, even the original skater who build it initially reach me out to thanks for keeping the legacy alive.

Loved the video, and the message behind it too, to improve the rules and laws we need to break them sometimes. And that skating and the culture is kind of based around not following rules in the first place. Its an awesome outlet to clear the mind and work on your body and also challenging yourself physically, mentally, and creatively. Sometimes the systems in places don’t really want us to be so free, do they?

You aren't joking about the super nice skatepark trap. I've been skating a new Spohn Ranch park constantly before I got into some legal troubles and now I'm stuck in my state and can only skate an aging ARC park on pitted asphalt and a crust DIY spot. It's been a learning curve but I'm adapting 😂 got some projects brewing at the DIY spot so things are definitely looking up because it's legal and we can do whatever there. Thanks for talking about your friend who can't skate the crust because I feel like you were talking about me and I needed to hear that. 💪

We've got an old bowl which needs repair and coping, the whole thing is roll in apart from about 1.5m of coping which has subsided in the concrete because the bowl has been resurfaced so many times since the 80s and no one has touched the coping. I really want to fix the holes and cracks and add some coping to a couple of areas. The thing I like about it is that there's no social issues there, the new skate park the town has has become a hang out area for mobs and youth gangs and is really a BMX park more than anything.
