Extreme Reloading: Testing the Effect of .308 Bullet Uniformity at the Range (ep. 05)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лис 2021
- We previously measured and sorted 69 gr. Barnes Match Burner bullets and shot these bullets at the range. We also measured and sorted .308 bullets and in this video, we shoot and compare weight sorted, base to ogive sorted, and variable weight bullets. Can we improve the precision of our ammunition using painstakingly sorted bullets?

There is so many Variables to this test it’s really hard to determine what’s up even with sorting but it’s fun too experiment and see what really matters !! I know you spent alote of time on this so thanks for posting!!
Thanks cory8791. I think it is good to know what works and what does not. Yes, there are lots of variables at play but sorting bullets does not seem to be primary driver.
Very good video thanks 👍🏼
You are welcome. Thank you for watching.
Sure appreciate the time, energy, effort & resources to provide this data. I have considered the same & have weight sorted a very little over the years. This is not quite what I expected. Truth is that my rifle & loads are surely more accurate than I. Thank you again.
Hello and thanks for being a regular viewer. I have weight sorted for years thinking it must help. These sorts of tests are helpful as I can learn what works and what doesn't and then spend my time on something that can make a difference.
Hey Man
I used to always weigh sort my .308 projectiles until I did a test similar to yours and found like you that it made no difference to my groups interestingly random weights seemed to group tighter which made no sense so I thought maybe it was me , I then got my buddy to run through the same process using the same ammo and rifle he came up with the same results as me so this ruled out the shooter , it still makes no sense but the results were there on paper , I no longer worry about weighing bullets and now put more time into getting a perfect powder , powder load and the correct seating depth for the conditions on the day , thanks for the video and your time with this test . Steve . Hi
That is great to hear. Others are reporting back the same thing. Weight sorting bullets provides little if any benefit. Later this season we will be looking at jump to lands and I think you will like that video. Thanks for watching and posting! Take care.
Bullet balance matters a lot (think of an unbalanced tire). If the mass of the bullet is not exactly around the centerline of the bullet, each rotation will cause the bullet to shift position. Sometimes you can visually check boat tail bullets by rolling them along a sheet or glass and observing the shank to boat tail line. I don't know of an easy way to check flat base bullets.
Thanks for the video and information. I have tried sorting through my bullets. I had similar results as you were having in this video. My rifle is a savage factory set up. .75 to 1.00 groups.
This excellent to hear Dwayne. Confirms what I am seeing. I think you are going to like some of our next videos too.
There are many factors involved. You didn't mention anything about case prep and level of accuracy on powder drop as well as type of brass and if you measured them for H2O volume consistency.
Standard Deviation seems like it would have an obvious and significant correlation to group size; but it doesn't. Same seems to be the case for weight and base-to-ogive. With lead core bullets, I suspect center of gravity is prime factor. But I have no idea how that would be reliably and consistently measured and sorted.
I think you are right. I tried various ways to test for balance points but cannot find any meaningful and repeatable measurement technique. I cannot figure out how to measure that.
Seems to me your gun doesn't like that load it's either the powder or the bullet because that gun should be shooting way better then that with hand loads
I think you would see improvement if you played with seating depth. At least my rifle did and it was shooting about the same size groups as yours.
I agree, and we already have a video in the works on bullet seating depth and jump to the lands. It will be out in December.
Can you test if there is a huge difference in same powder , from powder lot to powder lot of same kind
I have watched that for years and see very, very little difference between powder lots. My experience is with Hodgdon and Alliant powders. I hope this helps, thanks for watching and posting!
