- This 1995 Toyota Corolla features a high-revving, 175-horsepower 4AGE "Blacktop" 20-Valve JDM Engine swap, with a manual transmission. The 4AGE engine is more commonly found on the earlier, rear-drive AE86 models, but this front-drive AE101 model, unloved as it is in car-guy circles, proves to be a manic good time, though it was sorely in need of new tires.

If only he really knew of what GEM of a ride he bought. It is so rare to see a fully swap 4age 20v blacktop yet alone with a 6 speed tranny. The previous owner really knew what he was doing with this car. Made me miss my 96 rolla.

That car appears to be an AE102, not a 101. Sounds great! These were the best cars Toyota ever made imo, 93-97 in the US market.

Minor correction on the description: this isn't the AE86 engine. The AE86 had the first two generations of the 4A-GE, and this one is a fifth generation that would have been taken out of a Carina or a later Sprinter/Corolla (including the JDM version of this car). It's the same engine family as the red and black top, but it uses a completely different head design, with five valves per cylinder instead of four. You do seem these engines SWAPPED into AE86s quite often, though, most famously in "Initial D".

Actually it was first 3 gens. Blue top (tvis). Red top (tvis), and red top 100kw without tvis. Had them all in NZ. Then silver top and black. But yeah who cares.

The first car i learned to drive in was my dads 99 corolla witha 4afe. I had so much of fun driving fhat car at the absolute limit all day everyday everywhere i went. It was an absolute blast to drive! They handle so well and the motors are bombproof! It had 530000kms on the clock when my dad sold it. Oneday ill buy a corolla of my own and blacktop 4age swap it👌🏽😍

Kinda surprised nobody ever booked a Solara/Camry Solara (1st gen). There were a bunch of us with those cars that had some nice supporting mods in addition to theTRD supercharger, or an even larger aftermarket blower, suspension/plumbing etc. the little 1MZ V6 really woke up reasonably well. Lots of guys did 5 speed swaps because the 4 speed slushbox auto killed so much power that putting a TRD supercharger on the auto cars gave you about the same wheel horsepower as the manual cars had stock. I almost did all that too but in the end decided to save up and switch to something RWD. anyway those solara’s really were pretty nice little sleeper coupes though

I have a 95 1.6 auto 178,000 miles. all stock. it's rusted to hell but runs like brand new...runs quiet too....its not for racing obviously but its the most reliable car ive ever had...got it for $500 5yrs ago.

I love ae101 chassis, i learned how to drive with it, sadly we have to sell it for an upgrade, i would love to own another one but with 2zz-ge engine swap. Seem a little bit ambitious but i'll get there soon.
both corolla and nissan sentras between 92 and 96 are very good platforms for tuning.
the corolla with the 4age 20v, the sentra with the sr20

I had a 1994 base model (bought new). It had almost 300K miles with only oil changes, a couple of spark plugs and transmission fluid flushed + timing belt changed ONCE only.
Sadly it was totaled in 2011 otherwise it would be close to 400K miles now. :(

Well in Barbados we call that a GT Corolla convert because there is a AE100&110 GT Corolla that comes built like that from Japan stock but the the 6sp come over in the bzr Ae111 and some BZ touring wagon

Need a AE82 with 20v sliver top and mr2 5 speed lsd box out of aw111 mr2 that’s a quick car for what it is ,black top engine aren’t good for turbo and the 6 speed trans aren’t that great unless it’s a lsd one,I’ve got 4age 16v in my garage/ workshop at home . Also 20v are still 4age as in engine code/family only difference mostly is the cylinder head because it has 5 valves per cylinders not 4 here in Australia we have so many Corolla’s and 4age engine

Idk what to think if this. Damn crap ass tires. No way to know. I know they make good tires. And they're super cheap. No excuse.
Joe Black there's lots of 14" tires and wheels available. He already has aftermarket wheels. It's a small low power car. He doesn't need super crazy wide tires. Just a GOOD 195-225 would do great on that car. If its a GOOD tire.
Joe Black also if you look at the car again. He maybe would have a hard time running a 16". He'd have to run a tiny sidewall. 14 fits the car pretty good. 15 would be a good choice. It's hard to find super low profile tires in small diameter. Honestly 15s are probably his best bet with having the most tire options. Hard to say for sure without knowing if his current tires are the same height as stock or not. If they're downsized then I'd agree maybe run a 16".
Also smaller wheels are lighter. And weight makes a big difference.
