I had the privilege of seeing the British and Canadian Lancasters flying over the Calder Valley (where I live) in 2014.
I had no idea they were going to be here, and I was sitting at my computer in the attic when I heard *that* sound. First I thought "Merlin ?". Then "More than one Merlin ???". When I realized I could hear LOTS of Merlins I stuck my head out of the window to be greeted by the glorious sight of the two Lancasters, close enough that I could easily make out the crew in the cockpit.
Needless to say, I watched until they passed out of sight, heading toward Derwent reservoir. Not ashamed to admit I was rather choked up.
The BBMF Lancaster once flew directly over my house when I was in the computer room. I heard the noise, opened the window, saw nothing, and then it appeared from behind me over the roof and filled my field of vision. I had the impression I could reach out and touch it it was so low and large in my vision. I'll never forget that sight and sound.
@@owensmith7530 There's no mistaking the sound of Merlin engines. I used to work at a company that was a couple of miles directly south of one of the country's main radar/navigation beacons, so a lot of air traffic passed overhead. As my job was goods inward I spent a lot of time outside in the yard and saw quite a few rare aircraft, always keeping my ears pricked for that *special* sound. I was lucky enough to hear it a couple of times, once it was the BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane, and once was a Mustang. 😀
During the buildup to the first Gulf conflict I also saw many B52's high up and always flying in pairs.
I was privileged to see both Lancasters flying in formation at Little Gransden in Cambridgeshire in 2014. A fitting tribute to all the young men who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
I confess that I had a tear in my eye.

The folks at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum do tremendous work. The museum is fantastic, seeing all the planes there makes for a great day. And I had the pleasure to speak with one of the gentlemen (if memory serves, he's a pilot) about Andy Mynarski. I thank the museum for all their hard work.
I can't express the pride I feel for our fathers and grandfathers every time the Myrnarski Lanc, flies over my neighbourhood. It is the same on the occasions when the WWI replicas from Brampton fly by, or when the Geneseo B-17 makes an appearance.
To our forefathers, especially at this time, I thank you for your sacrifice, and I pledge to do my part in preserving Canada's freedom.
I consider myself lucky and privileged to have seen one flying over Biggin Hill runway in 2006. Watched the documentary about the Canadian Lanc travelling to the UK - many people who appeared in that show were misty seeing two flying in formation. Get three together in the air - people will go nuts. A worthy goal.
Nice to think that another beautiful lady will return to the skies once more.
I grew up in the Hamilton area, and was fortunate enough to see the VRA lanc fly dozens of times, even during its refurbishment period. A beautiful sight, an even better sound, with those powerful Merlin engines rumbling.
I was lucky enough to get aboard her when she was sat at Blackpool airport in the 1960’s and have visited her many times over the years. A national treasure and absolutely priceless.
I'm lucky enough to have VRA fly over my house on a regular basis each summer. I can recognize her by her sound before I even see her.

When the Canadian lanc came over they did a flypast with city of Lincoln over the top of East Kirkby whilst just Jane was doing a fast taxi..

I am so lucky. I only live about an hours drive from Hamilton and I get to see (and hear) this lovely bird on a regular basis (Mk X built in Malton where the Avro Arrow was born). It's sad there are only 2 left flying. Fingers crossed for the third.
It was a great experience and a sad one too, she should have been in the air with the other two , I'm a member of the lincolnshire aviation heritage centre and see jane in many guises , i hope she finally gets to fly , they also have a mozzy doing taxy runs too and if that were up there it would be amazing, last saw a mozzy over the derwent with the lanc many many years ago an awesome sight 👍

I have been lucky enough to have had a tour thru the Lancaster at Hamilton, Ontario , just a couple of days prior to her heading to the UK, she was still warm from a flight that day, totally fantastic! Two years ago we were present at Naton, Alberta at 9:30 at night when the Canadian Bomber Command Museum, rolled out there Lancaster, & in the dark her fired up ! 15 minutes of pure joy! The Occassion was the 75th anniversary of the crash of a Lancaster in France, the pilot who tried to save several badly injured members of the crew was awarded a VC, they all died on impact.
This is a wonderful bit of news! I am lucky enough to live in the Niagara area of Ontario, Canada and the CWH Lancaster is a regular visitor in our skies. It's fantastic to think that there will be a third airworthy Lancaster to keep the memory of this important aircraft!!!

I visited the Hamilton Museum three years ago, and hope to again if the border opens up. The Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology was also pretty awesome.
I saw the two Lancasters flying over Goodwood airfield when Canada gave us that magnificent privilege of pairing our Lancaster with theirs. It was an absolutely fantastic sight to see. And to hear those awesome Merlins growling through the sky, while accompanied by a Spitfire and Hurricane, (two extra Merlins). Nothing could top that. Apart from seeing three Lancasters flying together. What a magical sight that would be. 👌
What a wonderful thing to be doing. As an occupant of the Derwent area i have enjoyed many flybys, but they are never anything other than a huge privilege and pleasure to witness. The tandem flight was viewed from my garden and brought real tears to my eyes.
It's amazing to think that once the night sky was filled with hundreds of these planes at a time. Now, there's only a handful.

Great to watch this and hear that a 3rd Lanc is being restored in BC. My father flew 10 ops against the Germans as a mid upper gunner in both the RAF and RCAF. I took him to see the Hamilton CN Lanc. a few years before he passed. They used to fly it as part of the airshow at the CNE in Toronto.
I saw both at an airshow in 2014, and visited East Kirkby last year. Jane will begin flying in about 2028.
My Dad was an electrician in the RAF and actually worked on the City of Lincoln on one of its maintenance schedules. He was 80 last year and we booked him a taxi run @ East Kirkby in June. He reckons he wants to sit at the tail gun during the taxi. :)
I have a love affair with the "Lanc" and also the "Mossie" (Another great British aircraft, that needs to fly again in the UK). My Grandmother was employed at Metrovicks at Trafford Park and worked firstly on Manchester's, then Lancaster's and Lincoln's during their production. She stayed at MV, until my Grandfather came home from the war and aircraft production ceased at MV.

I saw the 2 of them fly over Southend when the Canadian one was visiting, what a fantastic sight and the noise was something else.
They flew over my house with a Vulcan in between. That was something I will never forget.
Luckily after suggestion from myself and others we witnessed Just Jane fast running whilst the two airworthy Lancs flew past the airfield. Having met the Pantons in the past this is great news to honour their foresight.
I was at the second event that came first. lol
They actually wanted to save a Halifax which is what their brother died in but Dad wouldn't allow it so we now only have an unairworthy Bitsa at York.
A few years ago I was sitting in my backyard with some friends and I heard the unmistakable sound of a Lancaster coming into Edmonton Alberta For an air show. I jumped up ran out to the front for a look and my friends I thought I’d gone nuts. I said that’s a Lancaster and they all said how the hell did you know that. In 1952 when I was 10 there was a fair in Brandon Manitoba that my dad took me to and there was four or five P51’s that put on a show. I never forgot that sound.
Have seen PA474 many times.Used to fly over my house out and back to Coningsby on a regular basis,and the Vulcan too.Also the beautiful VC10.
Had the pleasure of seeing both Lancasters at Little Gransden,later passing by my house again.A great sight,which l will always remember.

I see “Vera” flying over my home regularly. When I was in Scotland the year she was visiting I watched both fly over Loch Fyne. It was impressive to see my hometown honey flying overseas.
What a beautiful sight the Lancaster bomber makes in flight and the sound of four Merlin engines (genuine Merlins or not) is music to my ears, the combination of the two brings the whole of this iconic and beautiful aircraft to life in its natural environment, the sky. How wonderful. I have casually followed the piece by piece restoration since the eighties and it is so great to know she will fly again. A truly fitting tribute to a long lost brother and all those who flew, fought in and lost their lives while serving in Bomber Command. I will be their to watch her at an airshow or two when she finally appears. (Love the sound of those engines on this video BTW! Excellent!!)
If only there was a Stirling somewhere, airworthy or not. My great uncle flew one and i am amazed that none survive intact.
They should get that Halifax airworthy again too!

My great grand father, long passed now survived the war and he was very secretive about his experiences other than to mention that the pilot and crew were like brothers in the air. I, along with a lot of others continually pay homage to all the brave aviators and pilots but especially to the brave pilot of the Lancaster my GGF was in. He nursed the plane back in spite of heavy flak damage and landed safely, even with his injuries and saving the lives of all on board. without his skills, i wouldn't be here commenting on this now.
I saw and heard just once a " LANC " in the air and over my head at id say 500ft....was at a Royal Agricultural Show at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire back in i 1980.....it was totally awe inspiring, I shall never forget it ! It had an escort of a Spitfire and a Hurricane , on the tip of each of its wings.....I count myself Lucky indeed to have witnessed its grace and undeniable power .
As a teenager I was on a cycling tour with my mates and stayed in Lincoln Youth Hostel. Next day we were heading up north and passed Scampton RAF base where I took a photo of my mates standing in front of Just Jane. I still have the photo somewhere. We stopped further along the road at a gate and watched 4 Valcan bombers taking off in turn, the noise was horrific. That must have been 60 years ago.

Thanks for a welcome and interesting video. The idea of a third Lanc in the air is exciting.
There were certainly a lot of them built during the war. As a teenager, a few years after the end of the war, I used to cycle on a Saturday to Hullavington airfield in Wiltshire to watch the Chipmunks buzzing around and I remember a dozen or so Lancasters parked on tarmac on the airfield. I never saw then fly and wondered what was going to happen to them.
The last I heard of the Canadian Lanc, a year or so ago, was that it bedly needed repairs that would cost some £180 000. I hope the funds were raised to get it flying again.
There are two more at varying stages of completion in Canada as well, so there could be 5 before long!!
Beautiful. My grandfather was the pilot on the "Able Mabel" among a few others I think, during the war.
She was at Elsham Wold just up the road from me. Also one of the options in the Airfix kit.

Year 7 of 'Janes' restoration now, the day she joins Vera and Thumper in the air will be a special one indeed
Used to live in Lincolnshire and regularly saw the Lanc, Spit and Hurri flying in formation over Donington. Another great memory was a B17 doing low passes over Holbeach St John airfield and pulling out over our garden in Cowbit. Could almost have reached up and touched it. The sound was fantastic. As they say four Pratt and Whitney's burning and turning. The other aviation memory from Donington was Warthogs circling the village. From what I can gather they were apparently doing laser aiming practice.
The Pantons brother, Christopher, was not shot down in a Lancaster but in Halifax bomber HX272 on 30/31 March 1944

The Lancaster in Hamilton has made many flights. Every time I see it it is emotional.
I’ve seen, have video and pictures of KB 726 at Thunder over Michigan in 2006, still remember the roar of those 4 Merlins flying over head, awesome.

There's a You Tube channel run by a chap named Neville Wheeldon who had been painstakingly documenting the restoration of "Just Jane" to flight worthy condition. He puts out a video every Saturday and gives an in depth description of what, why and how they're doing the restoration.
His channel is well worth following if one is interested in this sort of thing.

Actually there could be a fourth airworthy Lancaster in the future. Another one is being restored in Canada. I think it is British Columbia. Vancouver perhaps. It was mentioned in the aviation journals some time ago.

I was travelling on a bus at Stoke on Trent when I heard a sound unknown to me. Looking up I saw this big old plane. I didn't know what it was and research showed me it was a Lancaster. At the time the Canadian plane was still under reconstruction. The British one was still unique. Now it has a 'mate', and hopefully the pair will be joined by another 'mate'. Long may they fly in safety. (From an Australian who's seen permanently grounded "G for George" in Canberra.)
Nothing like the sound of 4 Merlin engines roaring overhead... this is hands-down, my favourite plane of the war. I'm a bit partial though, as my grandfather, S/Ldr R.A. Swartz flew 66 missions, being shot down on his 28th birthday in 1944 while supporting D-day breakout operations.
I am really hoping they get this 3rd Lanc into the air. It would be a thing of beauty to see, hear and feel them fly-by...
There's another one in Canada that's being restored to fly (FM104 IIRC) but they don't exactly shout about it!

I had the privilege and pleasure of doing a taxi run in this old girl. The smell and the feeling of those four Merlin engines firing into life and the vibrations through the plane were absolutely incredible. it was probably one of the best moments of my life it will be so good to see her finally flying again and I would happily pay to take a flight if that was at all possible.
There's a possibility of a fourth one flying in the distant future. Lancaster fm104 is under restoration in Canada for what they're planning to be, airworthiness status.
Great Uncle Roy would be over the moon to get more of these amazing beasts back in the sky, where they belong 👍👍👍👍👍
I don't know about "back in the air soon." Multiple videos on that plane make agreed references to a 10-year restoration schedule, and they're about midway through it now.
Yep, currently four years into a ten year restoration plan.
That's probably due to a conservative estimate for acquiring funds. If they happen to get a large bequest the schedule would move up.
do it slow, do it right, thats fine by me. 5 or 6 years not so long in relation to her age. I saw a a Lanc at East Kirkby last summer, but that one appeared pretty much complete, so a little confused by this info.
How joyous to hear Just Jane's restoration story. What a grrreeeaaatt nickname for a Lancaster bomber! In a few generations following the trend of historical (criticism/cynicism) story, the unmatched historical feats of the outta-the-blue Lancaster airplane, their unbelievably magnificent feats of men, mission accomplishments and machines, their crew members and especially designers and builders could very well be doubted to have existed as such, mere myth, . . . Yet now a precious one is added; just these 3 fly before our loving and grateful eyes and ears out of the largest production run of military bomber airplanes in history.
They fly in steadfast, highly due, rare resounding testament to Great Britain's people's finest hour in history - and perhaps, as a peerless technological response to overwhelming danger or trouble, the Lancaster is a magnificent breakthrough that, coming as it did, credits the English way and maybe all humanity too of the miracles possible that humanity CAN achieve to gloriously win against such odds. The Lancaster, The Mosquito and the Spitfire were all quite unique and each miracle was powered by a RR Merlin engine, the heart of them all, each one, peerless for their age, just in time technological miracles that together saved the day for us all. Happy landings always "Just Jane".
I wish my Dad could see this, he was a Fitter, engines in Two RAF Squadrons during the War. He loved the Merlin Engines and the Lanc,
The commentator said "eventually the Lancaster returned to Britain". I saw it take off from Sydney in 1965. I also currently support its restoration.
It's an expensive beast to restore, either finding replacement parts or making them new. The Pantons deserve your financial support - please.
Glad to see some real progress has been made on this aircraft atlast as I've heard various stories about financial and legal problems that has held it back.
But its the shear fact as a proud citizen of the city of Lancaster which they are named (and a bit of an aircraft nut) I want to see more of them take to the sky again!
I’ve seen the Battle of Britain memorial flights lanc at the Sunderland airshow and I’ve visited the Lincolnshire aviation heritage centre east Kirby to see just Jayne. Absolutely beautiful aircraft, would love to see her flying.
i went down to east kirkby and had a taxi ride in Just Jane, and had the fantastic stories told to us. a day i'll never forget.
The Canadian Lancaster made a star appearance at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum's WW II Weekend, in Reading Pa. several years ago. It's the largest WW II gathering in the US. I got some great pictures of it!
We had 3 or4 at Scampton in 1954 for filming of the Dam Busters. The pilots from up the road at Hemsby used to beat up the control tower out sheer joie de vivre their Lincolns were much heavier.
I did a nerve in my neck a few years ago when I was in the rear gunner position in this plane on a visit. It still hurts a bit!

I occasionally saw these flying over Inverkeithing, Scotland during the 1980's.
i seen just jane back in 2010 and the bob lan in 2016 up in largs scotland flyin and it was a sight to watch flyin you just wonder how many lans are still with us not flyin
Good news! Would be lovely to have a Halifax or Stirling up there too. Such a shame there aren't more marques about. Would love to see a Westland Whirlwind in the air!
I am lucky enough to have had a 'taxi' ride in Just Jane for a special birthday, & thought of my father who competed two tours in lancs on 626 SQ and then the PFF with 156 Sq.. Very emotional. However, speaking to those at East Kirby there is a school of thought the taxi rides are a such an earner & a crowd pull that it will never be risked getting Just Jane airborne. I do not know if that is right or not.
There will be another eventually to, a Maritime version in B.C.

I was at Farnborough and the International Air Tattoo to witness the 2 Lancasters fly over, the crowd fell silent as 8 Merlins roar above us! Keeping my fingers crossed that we WILL see the three of them flying together! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻😀
Going for a taxi run in July this year cant wait, I was stationed at RAF Coningsby so have seen the BBMF Lancaster up close. A beautiful plane be good to get another in the air.

I have been to see both of the UK Lancasters and used to live on the flight path of RAF Coningsby, where the BMF is based, so have seen the City Of Lincoln flying over numerous times. In Lincoln itself it is said that you tell visitors because only they look up when the Lanc flies over. One error in the commentary is that Chris Panton was in a Halifax when he was killed
VERA flies every summer out from Hamilton over Niagera Falls, Lake Ontario making a Bee Line for a loop around Toronto before returning back on the hour flight to Hamilton.
Being a local in Toronto, hearing her fly is incredible, and for free. Airshow World is a great yt Channel where Stu Bear features the Lan'c regularly, with live chat. I hope that Just Jane makes it to the skies.
Saw those 2 lancs together at Southport it was a misty day eerie drone of the 8 merlin then a Shilbottle if those 2 beautiful airplanes brings a tear to.my eye now just thinking about it a day I will never forget there's ment to be a typhoon b1 going up and a mosquito now those with that Halifax and a formation of hurricane and spits wow what a sight that would be
My old man was in the ATC as a teenager in Yorkshire in WW2, he said when he was around 15 he went up in a Lancaster when it was being flown on a test flight after maintenance. He sat in the rear gunner’s seat and he said he remembers the guns moving around! It would have been quite a thrill for a young bloke.

I have been on this aircraft. When she was kept at Blackpool airport in the late Sixties, I remember having to climb over the wing spar, before I was allowed to sit in the pilots seat. I believe she may have flow to the Lincoln under her own power, but not to sure, or when she left. I sill have a signed guide that, I got at the same time.
No Unfortunately the flight to Blackpool was to be her last, she left on lorries to Scampton then to East Kirby in 1988.
I remember there had been an airworthy Lancaster in Great Britain somewhere during the late 70s, but grounded as a gate guard thereafter. Does anyone know about it?

That Nx611 was in a hanger on Squiresgate airport at Blackpool for several years, a frind has some photos of the plane and some of him in side it, it will fly again i am sure of that and i will be there when it does,

There's a good one in the National War Memorial Canberra "G for Gorge" it was flown back by its crew who were the first to have competed a certain number of missions
I believe it was one of only two to come to Australia the other one was to promote the sale of war bonds and I think it was ditched off the New South Wales coast near Coffs Harbour

Perhaps it's because he keeps on pronouncing Lancaster wrong, with the stress on the second syllable. He got Manchester right; he just needs to do a bit more work on Lancaster. He sounds English; shouldn't be too difficult.
It's because he repeated himself about 5 times, and didn't actually get to the crux of the video until the last 60 seconds.

Its a nice story, but what might upset some people is there are detail errors that should have been caught and corrected. I noted 3-4 well-known 'errors'.
The disassembled aircraft looks like a Revellers kit ? Seriously, a British Bomber and a US model manufacturer ? Why not Airfix - long associated with models of the Lanc ? I'm very disappointed with that reference !
Or more ironic as Revell of Germany released a Lancaster kit😂
My father in law was a flight mechanic on the Lancaster bombers.

Living close to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre I am a frequent visitor to Just Jane. The process of returning her to the skies is very much more complex than your video suggests, involving the use of a second Lancaster to maintain the fund raising Taxi runs. Fred and Harold's brother was killed while flying in a Halifax, not a Lancaster.
‘Just Jane’ does the taxi runs. There is no second Lancaster at East Kirkby so I’m not sure what you mean
There’s one Lanc still surviving and that few know about, opposite le Bourget’s runways, in Dugny, France.
A former French navy aircraft, it suffered a rough landing in Polynesia and was brought back to mainland European France two decades ago, after probably as many spent rusting under the sun.
Nowadays the fuselage has been completed and the engines are now being taken care of by a group of volounteers from the association les ailes anciennes.
The amount of corrosion of the wing spar make it so that this aircraft will never fly again, sadly.

Not really near future as they are talking of this being year 6 of a project 10 year restoration programme. That's assuming they don't run into any problems. I hope all goes according to plan and wish them every success. Hope fully I'll still be alive to see it when it happens.
Where did you get the fly by footage of the Lancaster at the very start of the video? The first 5 seconds seems very familiar to me...
