I'm so pleased to hear your views on the magicians assistant because I read if a few years ago and it was my first and only Ann patchet because of it feeling a little flat for me too. Bel canto I will read I think to give her a proper shot :)
Elena Reads Books yeahhhh, that one.. sigh. I'm so glad I did not read it first, it probably would have put me off her books. But rest assured it is definitely the weakest.
I enjoyed The Magician's Assistant but towards the end, it really drifted off from Parsifal, who was set up to be the enigma and main focus of the story. I didn't feel I gained any further insight into Parsifal during the Nebraska trip which was the whole reason Sabine went. What was she even doing there for so long? The Tetters' drama with Kitty and Howard bored me quite a bit. How was it relevant to the story? I did love the beginning in L.A.. The setting was very strong and it felt very stylish, modern, and very 90s, and Phan's beautiful house seemed like a dream! I just think it was an odd book with no real goal. It should've been Parsifal and discovering his secret past (the premise is immediately engaging and does have so much potential) but it just drifted off.
I love long rambling videos! State of Wonder sounds really interesting, I might start with that one.
***** It's a great place to start! And I'm glad that there is love for my rambling! hehe
