    How I appreciate your discerning eye for what suits you and for your pattern recommendations on styles that feel modern in their 1970s retro-ness, their uniqueness, or freshness! We already had all the prairie dress patterns we'll ever need. Gathered waist, long cotton dresses have their place, but even diehard prairie look lovers can only use a few if they live in a cool climate and work at an office.
    The scarlet-and-fuchsia A-line brocade skirt knocked my socks off. Wow. Great year-round for special events. It could be glammed-up or casualed-down, winterized and summerized, retro-ed or modernized, just with tops and accessories. The smashing 70s print "picnic" dress looks like you, not something trendy you bought to look like everyone else. Thank you also for reminding us at the end how terrific that iris print collared top was. Wow. And the two last sweaters in the final B-roll, high quality knitwear.
    I plan to try the Daughter Judy trouser pattern for the fit information reason. I wouldn't have known about the pattern without your rec.
    Continued success with your channel and your exciting life phase.

    I’ve just lost a whole lot of writing here. I wanted to say thank you for sharing your beautiful body, well styled, and so well articulated. What you’ve given me is encouragement and an insy-wincy bit of growing confidence that I can find peace with my body when I make to measure for myself.
    So I’m massively grateful to you for what you do, but also for sharing who you are.
    Thank you

      18:43 omg, you SO nailed the pattern match on the front- love those twinned flowers on either side of the skirt! This is stunning ❤ I also really admire how you thought about the design and the fit you’d like to have in order to adapt the pattern to suit your needs, while keeping the overall structure of the garment intact (shirring instead of fixed gathers)- this is something I’m practicing doing at the moment. I’m still quite early in my sewing “career” so it feels a bit uncomfortable to stray from the instructions, but seeing others do it and hearing their thought process re: the choices they made is teaching me a lot! Thanks for being one of my teachers in this 😊

      Congratulations on a great year! I really enjoy your channel, and this round-up was great! I really appreciate how you used this video to reflect on highs and lows and things learned, selecting a few key garments to illustrate these points. It made the video interesting and fun to watch. Thank you! And last, re your question: my big win this year wasn’t one specific garment, but rather a mindset I discovered over the course of the year: selecting and sewing and knitting garments that would teach me something. This has transformed clothing-making from a nice hobby to something that challenges me and gives me a feeling of expansion/growth. It’s been super great. A couple of skill-learning highlights: French seams, flat-felled seams, shirring and rolled hems on my (first🎉) overlocker, for sewing; colorwork and improving fit, for knitting. ❤

    Hi Steph! Your channel is one of my faves! Thank you for your interesting and thoughtful content. I did not do a lot of sewing last year, but my most recent project was a jeans upcycle and I love the result. I changed my skinny jeans to a wide-leg pair, and they are super cool now! Another of my favorite makers on UA-cam is Theresa at Lost My Thread. I love her very thoughtful and informative content as well. Also an American in London, randomly!

      Thanks for sharing, Erin! Love the idea of adjusting skinny jeans. I have a few pairs of Ginger jeans languishing in the back of my closet, and maybe I need to think about hacking them as well! Also grateful for the recommendation of Lost My Thread- I don't know how I never encountered her before!

    I always look forward to your videos whenever you get them out. Honestly, you and The Closet Historian are my favorite online makers. I have learned so much about pattern alteration and fitting from the Closet Historian.
    I have two garments I made in 2024 that I adore. After having pants as my nemesis, I took a jeans making class at my local fabric store. After help with fitting, the Morgan Jeans fit perfectly, and I wear them multiple times in a week. I also made the Boxy Coat from Tropical Research in a canvas-linen print for the exterior and a sherpa fleece for the interior. I added facings so the fleece doesn't show on the edges, put the waist casing on the inside, and used shock cord for the waist and hood to make the coat less boxy. It's quite warm jacket, so I can only wear about 5 months per year but I love it and get so many compliments.

    I don't mind that you don't put out loads of videos. I like quality and your content definitely is quality, so it is always a treat when one of your videos pops up. That brocade skirt is stunning and just looks perfect on you. I also love your summer knitted tanks. Recommendations for other makers: Kate at Ripper Seams who is just so funny. I don't make a lot of 'challenging' stuff really because I don't need it. However, I now have an invitation to a big, blingy wedding and need a suitable outfit. I am looking at making something with a floral sequin mesh over a satin viscose lining which will definitely test my skills!

    I love your channel because it’s just that bit different to other peoples. I love the designers you find, your way of presenting information.
    My most challenging make of 2024 was my mother of the bride dress for my daughters wedding. I would have preferred to buy premade, but all the premade dresses seem to have a certain style or aesthetic that wasn’t who I saw myself as (old made). Non mother of the bride dresses were all short and my daughter wanted me in long dress.
    It was an Australian bush wedding and I had found a single bed doona (duvet) cover for $10 that was blue and had Australian bush flowers all over it, and it was a nice shiny material. My daughter obsessed over this, and so I made a dress from it. I had to make my own pattern (first time) as there wasn’t enough material to make one from a premade pattern. I embellished with a sparky blood red waste band and made a matching evening clutch. I made the petticoat from the plain side of doina along with a lot of toil.
    The end result was an evening dress that looked like it cost a crap ton of money. But I was just wearing a $10 doona cover. It was perfect for the bush setting and rustic location, and I felt like a vibrant mum of the bride and not a dowdy old maid.

      This sounds INCREDIBLE. If you're on Instagram, please please send me a photo because I'd love to see it. Also, good for you for saying no to the store bought dresses that didn't make you feel good. I've no idea why these shops seem to think mothers of the bride only want to wear a shapeless, bedazzled, long shift dress.

    A lovely video Steph and great to hear your honesty about your makes. I'm another one who gets influenced by IG and then have to have a word with myself - no I'm not a 20 something scandinavian goddess I'm a 50 something frazzled English woman 😅. I try to give myself time when choosing a new project but then become a champion procrastinator - particularly when investing so much time and money. My proudest make of last year was my daughter's prom dress which took around 4 months, 3 toiles and two different sewing patterns which I hacked into one dress. It was a little stressful at times because it was for my daughter and I wanted her to feel good in it. Looking back, it was both challenging and enjoyable and it's probably good to try something a little out of your comfort zone every now and then. Please keep making your videos, I love your individuality and style.❤

And the vintage dress is soooo stylish. I‘m very thankful to you for once again telling us to push our boundaries. I shall try to do just that even tho‘ I have been sewing for nigh on 50 years. My talent is nowhere near yours . I just started sewing last year and it just brings me so much joy. I just love when my daughter hypes up my makes. I love that you dress your body so well and the fit is great. I know that’s after years. I make even my fails work because if I spent time sewing I am wearing it😅. I like raven maureen and Karin euter on UA-cam not sure if I spelled that correctly. Brittany Jones is my hands down favorite. Her personality and talent.

    This is the first time I have watched you. Great introduction! Makes me want to see more. Love your thoughtfulness, organization and sense of playful colour. My most creative make this year was a traditional shirt I made using a gorgeous heavy cotton tablecloth. I purchased that on a spring holiday to the west coast of Canada, with the plan to make a shirt. I took my time, used upscale finishes and careful pattern placement. It's a garment I will treasure for many years.

    Lovely overview of your year! I appreciate the approach you took in organizing your video. My favorite make of 2024 was a summer cotton dress. I was disappointed that I didn’t have time to make more summer dresses but, then, surprised at how much impact one well-fitted dress in a beautiful fabric made in my wardrobe, reinforcing quality over quantity. I always watch Karina on Lifting Pins and Needles. Because of where she is in life and because sewing/content creating are her living, she produces quantity but her sewing skills, fabric choices, and fitting are top notch. She works with basic sewing machines and does not try to sell gadgets or recommend superfluous notions. She does do garment testing and is an affiliate for a few indie pattern companies--that is one way she makes an income--but she stays true to herself and her lifestyle. She works from a stash that she purchases mindfully and will upcycle from second-hand clothing to get the quality of fabric she needs. I thoroughly enjoy your videos! Thank you for sharing your makes and perspective. 😊-Deborah

    Thanks for sharing the past year's journey. What I liked the most is that you can and do admit to occasional fails and think back on how to redo the garment or understand that it didn't flatter you. I've run into too many people that insist that they sew beautifully and don't need to learn anything more because they know it all. I could have a field day pointing out all of their flaws in garment construction. I just ignore those kind of people and move on.
    This year I made a black Ponte knit tennis skirt that is knee lenvth, a striped blouse, and the daughter Judy Coe Trouser in black stretch denim. My goal is to have a capsule wardrobe in mostly black. The clothes can be dressed up or down and accessories are heavily used. One year ago, I couldn't sit up at the table for longer than 15-20 minutes. Now I can sit at the table 3-4 hours. I am also working on walking four blocks in one stretch.

I'm still a new sewer (only 3 garments made ☺️)... but my latest make was the Daphne dress from Sewing Patterns by Masin. It was for my brother's wedding and my first time making a fitted garment and lining too. It turned out well 😊 My fav YT makers are Sarah Naomi, So Sarah Sewed and Amelia Ellen. The Estelle sweater is so gorgeous!! The range and quality of your projects is so inspiring to me. Everything looks like a high end designer piece. My most fun sewing exercise this year was creating my own patterns and designs for simple tops. I started by copying a simple top that I like the fit of and then changing the neckline, doing some color blocking, playing with the silhouette, etc. It really sparked my creative energy. You asked about our favorite makers. Other than you, I also watch Alisa on Thoughtful Creativity, Catherine Sews and Evelyn Wood.

    Thanks for wrapping up your last making year! I find very interesting the different categories, and what eventually make the projects successful or less successful. (My big fails two years ago were also two summer tops in KfO Pure Silk, the other one of them was the same as you had, the broken rib one!) My most successful make last year was my lined woolen coat (The Modern Sewing Co Darcy). I had the patience not to rush through sewing and pressing, and I’m just so happy to have it in my wardrobe ❤

    What a wonderful line up of makes! 😍
    Daughter Judy has definitely put out pattern crush after pattern crush. I'm finally going to make one up as I've just cut the Bonnet button up shirt, but I kind of want all of her pants patterns, too.
    My favorite make this year was the parabolic button up from Tauko magazine. I had put it off because tracing off the overlapping patterns from the magazine seemed tedious and just asking for me to miss some notches etc. But I finally traced it off and made it up in my favorite color, a perfect teal linen with antique brass snaps. I did the short front view, graded between sizes and inverted the box pleat but it came out perfectly, burrito method yoke and all. I've also gotten a good amount of wear out of it already, it really feels like 'me' in a garment. It's comfy, breathable, lightweight but layerable (I live in Berkeley, CA so light layers are great year round), jusg classic enough for work but with interesting details and a relaxed fit. I plan to make the other view in a viscose soon while I'm on a shirt kick.

    My favorite garment from last year is the Mood Gingko blouse. Since I started really paying attention to making fit adjustments to sewing patterns 3 years ago, being able to adjust this pattern and have it fit without having to make a mock up felt like a win in how much I've learned with pattern adjustments. It encouraged me to get more into pattern fitting and I have some more involved makes lined up this year.
    Two of my favorite makers to follow are Haley Marie Vintage and Stephanie Canada. Vintage patterns are my current jam, and it's really inspiring to see what fabrics they pair with beautiful vintage patterns.

      @StephSewn Mood does have a lot of cute patterns. I will warn you to measure out the pattern pieces before you pick your size. The Gingko shirt had 10 inches of ease, so I picked a few sizes down from my listed measurements for a closer fit. I have two other Mood patterns printed out that I haven't gotten around to sewing yet, but I hope to get to them soon

    So many lovely makes, Steph. Thank you for sharing your honest review of them. I love that blue and white shirt you showed when you talked about the stats, and that McCall's dress is amazing. I think one of my favourite makes from last year was the Vivian Shao Chen Nephaline blouse that I made in a block print. Or maybe the Lotta dress from Tilly and the buttons. The Lotta really surprised me, and I have worn those dresses a lot (I made two). The pattern pictures didn't do it justice, and even though it is such an easy make, it just fits so well.

    I love the way you approached your roundup! It’s the time of the year we see so many of these videos and while I enjoy them, they kind of all blend together after watching a few. I love how you put thoughts and meaning in it. It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos, they’re so smart and fun and encouraging.
    One question, if I may: in the short video clips of some of the garment that you made, you showed a shirt, fabric is white with blue drawings on it. Could you let me know which pattern it is?

    Love your videos! It's like a present every time you put out a new one! You asked about our projects for this last year. Didn't do much sewing beside sewing three scrubs out of gorgeous fabric that was super cheap but a complete nightmare to sew, I have never sworn so much in my life, the tops really are made from thread and foul language. And then I retired in August. I tried to sew some Christmas gift bags for my SIL & BIL because I had the fabric and wanted to get it out of the house. My back then decided that was not acceptable so I can only sew for very short periods of time. So almost no sewing done since I retired. Damn.

      I'm so glad you enjoy my content! Happy to keep you company while your back improves. I'm really sorry you're not able to sew but glad you are taking care of yourself. Also, isn't it strange how the simplest projects can randomly be a nightmare?

    Great job Steph! 🤩 Gosh, I’m so envious of your fabrics - you have a gorgeous selection there! My aim this year is to improve my knitting. I have a pair of socks I want to knit and then I want to actually finish a sweater, instead of realising about 1/3 the way through that I don’t like it or I’ve messed up the sizing… I’m most proud of my pants sewing in 2024 though! I’ve been really really happy with the fits I’ve achieved, even though all I’ve done is toiled and pinched out excess, which feels like skipping the hard part of knowing what alterations I’m “supposed” to make and how to do them?! I was so afraid of making trousers, and now I’m excited to make more!

    • @StephSewn
      @StephSewn  6 днів тому

      YES love that you perfected your trouser fit. Once you experience a custom fit, very hard to return to RTW. I think it sounds like your experimentation probably got you to the same place that standard alteration plans would, so as long as they are comfortable, that's all that matters! I think some of fitting is more art than science anyway.

    What a fun round up! I really love your use of color - those two red knit tops, and the wide-collared 70's dress are stunning. I'm glad you got lots of use out of them last year. Can't wait to see what you work on next!

    I have two garments that are extra special to me that I made in 2024. The first one is a waistcoat. I started from the pattern of a sleeveless outdoor coat and modified the pattern until I got what I wanted. It was the first time I modified a pattern this much and made several toiles before cutting the good fabric. I learned a lot, I really loved it! The other garment is a dress that I made for the first time a few years ago, when I was quite new to sewing. I made many mistakes and I was sad that the dress didn’t work at the time. It took me a while to revisit if but I’m really glad I did!
    Favourite makers… now that’s a difficult question. One of the most well known on UA-cam is Bernadette Banner. I also enjoy a lot The Stitchery and Hazariel Atelier. I’m also always having a great time looking at La Fraise Sewing’s videos.

    favorite makes is probably a red cables jumper i knitted for christmas. Fumble is a silk dress i tried to make from some more expensive fabric and the fit is just awful, but I dont even want to try and fix the project anymore so its just stuffed in a bag somewhere hahahah. My favorite makes to watch is probably LilyKateMakes or Laura Penrose

    Great round up! My best make of the year was the Daughter Judy Thompson coat- my first pattern from them and I’ve heard so much praise for their trousers so I might try them next.

      Ooo what fabric did you use? I want to make the Thomson quilt coat soon

    • @k.8-t1v
      @k.8-t1v 6 днів тому

      @ I didn’t do the quilt version- I used merchant and mills 12oz Sanded twill in dark navy- gave a kind of velvet vibe without being over the top! I didn’t adjust the pattern and the sleeves are just short at the wrists- (very happy with that for me, I hate sleeves on my hands) but perhaps bear it in mind if you’re taller (I’m 5”4). Also I did one seam in bias binding and then after then sewed the seam allowance at 3/4in rather than 1/2in and just turned them under and secured with top stitching. Pattern worked completely fine at 3/4in sa.
      Realise now you didn’t ask for my entire pattern review but here it is! 😅 I’m sure I’ll make it again in a shorter length and might try it quilted!

    I love your channel! My favourite makers to follow are many but I like Lily Kate Makes, Free Your Sheep, Fruity Knitting, Jax & Rose and Closet Core. Most are knitting related, I need more sewing recommendations! I love my Onyx pants (sewing), Mare shawl, Dyyni sweater, and Calm Down Cardigan. I am also proud of the Flax sweater I knit for my husband which took two years but I finished it this year and had to do a lot of modifications to make it how he wanted.

    Thank you for your lovely and inspiring videos. I'm over twice your age and go for different styles, but nevertheless I get a great deal out of watching you. My immediate concern is that I had a moth invasion last year in the chest of drawers where I store my hand-knits! I managed to destroy the little pests, but was left with the problem of what to do with the damaged garments. I've invisibly mended those not too badly damaged, but still have four jumpers - of course including my two favourites - that are badly chewed. Every time I look at one of them, a new hole seems to appear. So, my next project is to have a go at visible mending. I find those skilled at it like Kate Sekules and Flora Collingwood-Norris rather intimidating, as I know I haven't their design and embroidery skills, but I must make a start as the alternatives are to wear damaged clothes or discard them, neither of which is very appealing.

      @StephSewn  6 днів тому +1

      I am SO sorry about your sweaters. Moths are the worst. I am glad you've been able to fix most of the damage so far, and some decorative mending sounds like a great plan. Hope it all works out!

    Wonderful 2024 roundup, thank you so much!! My most interesting project in 2024? Hmm, maybe a make-it-work-from-stash baby sleep sack with snaps that turned out surprisingly cute, or some of the beaded memory wire rings I made with dangles - love the movement this creates. For sewing channels that I find interesting: Thrills and Stitches for style and fun, Micarah Tewers for gowns and comedy, Rachel Stewart for her eye for matching fabrics and design, Sew Sew Live for chatty live sews and excellent tutorials, Raven Maureen for her wide range of projects, Gemima London for inspiration and interesting info, CaitMakes for her bubbly, fearless joy of sewing...and you!

    Hi Steph I made a turtle dove sweater this year with a blown yarn. Simple construction but I modified to be a copy of a commercial sweater I have loved to death . Also blown yarn is wild so light and soft but really warm . It invites people to touch though so if you hate that don’t do it !! I’ve really enjoyed your channel and other knitting sewing combo channels . I very much enjoy edible thoughts makes . She ( also Stephanie) has a really enjoyable attitude to creativity that pushes. My risk adverse boundary . At the end of the day what’s the worst that could happen ? Cheers to a new year and new makes

    Steph, I always look forward to your videos. You have an exceptional talent and not just in your creations but is your presentation and research. I have a knitting blunder in his year with My Favourite Things camisole #9. Used black knitting for olive silk and just had a heck of a time, so nixed it and bought ribbed knit and will use My Wardrobe’s tank. Probably black silk and my eyesight were a bad combination. I watch Whitney Robins Holley at Whit Sews and TomKat Stitchery, Sewing in the City and The Fold Line.
